The briquetting plant Lousie was founded in 1882 (September) and worked with almost no break at all until the 18th November 1991 when the last briquette was pressed.

The factory was shut down on the 6th February 1992.

It now is a historical monument.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
m September 1882 erfolgte die Inbetriebnahme der Brikettfabrik Louise, in der im Jahre 1883 bereits über 150.000 hl. Rohbraunkohle zu Briketts verarbeitet werden. Zunächst waren nur zwei Pressen zur Brikettierung aufgestellt. Auf Grund des ständig steigenden Bedarfs an Briketts wurden umfangreiche Erweiterungen durchgeführt. Damit konnten dann sieben Pressen zur Brikettproduktion genutzt werden. Zu den ursprünglich vorhandenen sechs Tellertrocknern wurden zwei Röhrentrockner notwendig. Die erste Lichtmaschine zur Stromerzeugung wurde 1896 in Betrieb genommen.
1908 wurde mit dem ersten Bauabschnitt der Kraftwerkshalle begonnen, in den Jahren 1924 und 1938 folgten weitere Bauabschnitte bis zur Vollendung des Gebäudes in seiner jetzigen Gestalt. Die Tagesleistung der Brikettfabrik betrug 1938 360 t. Beim Einmarsch der Roten Armee im Jahr 1945 kam es nur stundenweise zum Stillstand. Die Tagesproduktion an Briketts wurde auf 584 t erhöht, wobei der Wassergehalt allerdings 20 % betrug. Am 18. November 1991 wurde das letzte Brikett gepresst und am 6. Februar 1992 erfolgte nach 110 Jahren ununterbrochener Produktion die Stilllegung der Brikettfabrik. (Wikipedia)
Just another shot of this cool but homely veteran unit still toiling away in the far northern reaches of New England.
NECR 1750 (EMD SD9 blt. Apr. 1959) is seen switching back and forth over North Elm Street at the south end of the old Central Vermont Itay Yard at about MP 0.5 on the New England Central Railroad's Swanton Subdivision.
The 1750 is rather unattractive with its chopped nose, but sure is cool as the only operating example of this classic model in New England. None of the traditional New England roads ever purchased any SD9s, preferring instead the 4-axle GP9 model which were quite common. The 1750 was an original Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway unit were it served for 39 years as their number 161 before being sold to Railtex in 1998 and transferred to the Georgia Southwestern. It was around that time that its original high short hood was cut down and was renumbered 1900. It was transferred by then parent RailAmerica around 2005 to the Connecticut Southern and then came to the NECR around 2009. For the past dozen years she has been a stalwart switcher though her sibling, NECR 1901 (ex DMIR 168), that came at the same time has since been retired.
After going to investigate a South Shore Freight train, we ended up in Michigan City where we found a quad of GP38-2s at Carroll Avenue. We waited for them to make a pull, until they started shoving into an industry. We then staked out by the industry for who knows how long listening to the song of 4 roots blown 645s and a RS3L, until they eventually headed out.
The Soo Yard switch job arrives back in the USA with 408 leading a transfer from the CP on April 27, 1987. 40 foot boxcars were still very common in newsprint service at the time. When business was booming in the late 70's until the rerouting of most overhead freight in late summer 85 the Soo Yard switch job often made a few trips a day to Canada. By the Lake States era it was usually just a single trip and once back the yard unit would tie up for the day or often be added to the road power on train 12 and come back the next morning on train 11.
56 years ago today in this unintended before and after with yesterdays post from 5 years later, we see little evidence that the N&W merger was a few months before. Instead of half-moon herald N&W GE's, Alcos, and EMD's we see yellow striped Nickel Plate RSD-12's, GP7's, GP9's on the ready tracks and Lima switchers on the turntable tracks. This was my very first day using the 35mm that I had gotten for Christmas that year around a railroad.
Wouldn't it be amazing to switch jobs and sit at the front desk, welcoming visitors to the building? They must have so many fascinating reasons for coming and I'd love to help them find who they are looking for.
Fully Charged Live! returned to the Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre at the end of April 2022. Although no buses were on display at the show, the park & ride services provided a real mix of vehicles to enjoy including brand new electric Yutongs for Newport Bus, rare Higer Steeds from Big Lemon, and a number of local independent operators pooling together to provide a link to the main car park in Rushmoor Arena.
