Electrical switches outside the Pattern Shop.
The island was originally used as a prison, but later it thrived as a shipyard. Many naval ships were built and maintained at Cockatoo Island Dockyard, and the island was very busy in WWII.
This odd set of switches on the wall don't actually control anything, but if I toggle them just right a red light goes off accompanied by a very loud BUZZ! So I did what anyone else would do, I took a picture of it and stopped messing with it.
The markings on the wall around this old switch are real.. Althought I did put a bit of a texture to the entire image (first time doing this ever).. Thought I would give it a try and maby add to the grundgy feel of the switch.
IDK.. I think I like it!
Under the green lid is where the switch is to turn the coil on. The left hand portion is a lid that contains the fuse
An unknown switcher taking care of one of the various industries in and around Duluth near sunset. This was probably one of the last shots before we headed back east with our next stop being the LS&I.
Because of the arched top and the control relief, I can't really have the screws for the switch going through the top, but the top is not thick enough to just screw it in through the normal holes, so I make these little brackets out of brass to hold them in place. It moves the screws to a thicker part of the top, and gives me a look I really like while holding the switch very securely.
The telephone building leaves their windows open so you can see the huge switching systems inside. Not sure if it's a historical exhibit or if they still use them.
