Canola fields stretch to the horizon and encircle the old homestead, now deserted.

Mt Ngauruhoe surrounded by low cloud. Shot from the summit of Red Crater, Tongariro National Park.

It's rare to get low cloud above South Crater without also covering the entire mountain. I had my brief moment here which I managed to get three frames before the cloud rapidly thickened and put an end to the photographic session that night.

A Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) surrounded by darkness in the nature reserve of Gerrits, my backyard. The feeding of the animals during the winter has started. Seems I got a good amount of squirrels this year, counted up to 5 different individuals. Happy Days.

I wanted to try something, here.

The 10-20mm, like virtually any ultrawide, introduces distortion, obviously. I did correct it with Lightroom a tad, but I actually decided to adjust the amount of correction on this shot to make it less intrusive and keep some of that almost fisheye-y look that you get out of the camera. The idea was giving more of a feeling of being there, in the middle of the park, surrounded by these nicely coloured trees.

I don't know if the message actually comes through, but I thought it was worth a try, to experiment a bit.

a phone shot, taken quite a while ago on a fabulous misty morning , quite suprising what phone cameras can capture these days, i think most of these trees have been damaged or fallen during storm arwin, such a shame

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to photograph a few different species of wintering birds on some lovely red Sumac. This little Hermit Thrush showed up shortly after a flock of Bluebirds retreated to the nearby trees and put on a show, posing on the very top of the plant. I really love their understated colors and the unique pattern on their chest.

I happened to see a plane taking off over a group of trees, So I went out and found a position where I thought I could get this shot, with the plane seemingly surrounded, by trees. The landing gear had just been returned into the belly of the plane.

I am lucky to live somewhere surrounded by amazing countryside, and I've never walked in it so much since lockdown but there is still so much on my doorstep to explore. This is from Hartcliffe Hill Road near Oxspring and Penistone, looking over to Langsett reservoir and Midhope Moors beyond.

McKinley Woods is a peninsula surrounded by a bend of the Des Plaines River. It is the home of a lovely Oak-Hickory woodland. The fall colors seem to glow in the low, golden light before sunset. Thanks for viewing.

Berlin, Old Marzahn Harvest Festival: Looking through the tinted acryllic glass of a ferris wheel cabin over the historic village of Marzahn, surrounded by high-rise buildings

The traditional Old Marzahn Harvest Festival had not been held for four years. First it had to be cancelled due to coronavirus, then the company that had previously organised the festival cancelled its further involvement. This year there was a new start. But while the harvest festival used to have the character of a large farmers‘ market, supplemented by a few rides, especially for children, this year it was more of a large funfair, the farmers’ market was almost completely missing. Only a few social organisations, allotment garden associations and political parties presented themselves.

Lichens are amazing life forms: a fungus and an alga (and sometimes cyanobacteria) in a symbiotic relationship - that is, a composite organism. There are approximately 20,000 lichen species, and they cover 6% of the earth's land surface. Although they photosynthesize, they are not plants, but instead belong to the fungus kingdom (taxonomy has changed a lot since I was in school...) They grow almost everywhere, from sea level to high mountain elevations, in deserts, rain forests, tundra; on wood, stone, garage walls, gravestones, plastic; and some are among the earth's oldest living organisms.

From a purely aesthetic standpoint, they brighten up the prairie that surrounds the little village I now call home. And I have taken the theme "surrounded" and turned it into a photo project over the past decade and a half. Here's how it works. Any time I'm out hiking the prairie, regardless of any specific goal, I keep my eye open for patches of bare rock that have been completely surrounded by lichen growth. I am interested in the negative spaces thus created. They come in fantastic shapes. For a few years everything I shot seemed to be a aerial map of Australia, or even Africa, but I keep pushing for more exotic shapes, and now my collection includes an elongated cat, a whale, a rocking horse, various fish, an antelope on its knees, a shouting man, two satyrs dancing... all fanciful, of course, and most certainly someone else will not see what I see.

Here is the latest... quite possibly my favourite... but I won't try to influence anyone as to what it may be. Imagination is a personal thing. I've always been good at daydreaming; ask any of my former teachers. Once, in high school, I looked up from my desk and realized I was in the wrong class. The bell had gone, my classmates and teacher had shuffled out, new students and their teacher had shuffled in, while I sat there in another world. So... this is easy for me.

Technically, it's not difficult to make shots like this. Tripod, usually a macro lens, parallel plane focusing (align the plane of subject parallel with the camera's sensor), stop down the lens so that there's enough depth of field to keep everything in focus. Soft light is pleasing. Much easier than flowers or insects.

Found this section of rocks while exploring the area and thought it would make for a great composition and then I just waited for the light.

Our first port of call on the FantaSea cruise was at Nassau in the Bahamas. We decided to walk up to the zoo for the day. While the highlight of our first trip to this zoo was the flamingo parade, we really enjoyed the bird feeding this time.

Standing within this ancient tree's encircling embrace of branches, I could really *feel* the quiet peace emanating from within. There's something special about simply being present among these trees... the surrounding serenity touches you on a soul level. I don't really know how to properly describe it, so I hope this image itself can speak the words and bring you the feeling of connection with nature that I felt while in this place. 💚

P.S. I still have some very limited edition prints left of this image! If anyone's interested, you can find them here: www.elizabethgaddprints.com

So much love to you all on this beautiful day!

Located far deep into the enormous Misty Lake, only accessible by boat, surrounded by perpetual fog, murky vegetation and mysterious legends and tales, the Green Fish-Inn provides travellers and ocasional visitors a much needed place for resting and spent the night. The only thing you should be aware is the owner’s bad temper and unstable mood. Do you dare to spent the night?

It’s been a while since my last “castle” build. I wanted to build other things and so I did! But I felt the need to build castle again. However I decided not go crazy with technics or complexity. No angled walls or curved roofs this time! This was heavily based on one particular piece of the Art of Shaun Keenan: shaunkeenan.com

Thanks yet again to Markus for the great photoshop work on the main photo!

Hope you like it!
