Comparison.

A word we are all too familiar with, as artists and emotional, conceptual beings. We analyse. What can I do to be a better person? They, he, she is better than me. What's 'better'? and from who's perspective is one person a successor of life over another being. Over the past few months I've been profusely comparing, to the point I sit and wonder why I am so against my own life. I am against my own life because I'm comparing. It's a vicious yet contagious circle. Through the winter months and towards the end of 2015 I'd almost given up on my dreams. As many will have felt those awful feelings before, it's less of failure and more of a serial questioning. What do I need to do next to get to where I want to be. I want to be where my peers are, and how have they got there?

One day I was sat completing outstanding work for clients and I realised. Every time I'd get myself a drink or make myself food. I was walking in the same direction. That was up towards a room (my office) that I'd been sat in for days on end. Days when sometimes I wouldn't see daylight. No wonder I was comparing, I wanted a life that I wasn't even trying to live. I'm sure I've had these feelings before, back when my life was heading in the 'wrong' direction. There is no wrong direction though. There is only a direction in which we, as personal beings, can enable changes. And that's when I knew I had to.

I decided to surrender. Not my dreams but all my fears and comparisons. I don't trust myself when I'm in that state of mind, and therefore I give up on it.

Our old garden seat surrendering to nature. I was playing around with ETTR and histograms to get the widest dynamic range possible. Man, there is a lot to learn about getting the shot you want.

THANK YOU ALL MY KIND FLICKR FRIENDS.

YOUR FAVS, COMMENTS AND INVITATIONS ARE VERY MOTIVATING AND APPRECIATED.

Trudging through the endless Washington mud and fallen branches was totally worth the scratches and extra laundry today.

Hours to myself, getting lost, clearing my head and making decisions about life...I surrender to the choices of others, to the weight of the shoes that keep me attached to the earth, and the forces of nature.

I accept that the scenes I write and direct in my head do not play out on the same stage in reality, especially when they include other people.

And I forgive myself for wanting things out of my reach.

Gratitude to Evergreen State College.

Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to the Irish Political Figures Photographic Collection. Our boss has decided to make the collection available for use on Flickr. Grasping the opportunity with both hands, our first selection is perhaps the most iconic image from the collection. We see Pádraic Pearse surrendering to General William Henry Muir Lowe and his son John, on Moore Lane, Dublin. Partially visible to Pearse's right is nurse Elizabeth O'Farrell.

As today's contributors have noted, this image is described as "one of the most famous and widely reproduced Irish historical images". It was likely taken on Parnell Street (between Moore Street and Moore Lane), at approximately 2:30pm on 29 April 1916, evidently by an amateur photographer who was a British Army officer at the scene. At least a handful of slightly altered versions exist - some seemingly attempting to account for the boots of Nurse Farrell, who was half hidden (or perhaps hiding?) behind Pearse. While history has focused more on the men pictured (Lowe and Pearse especially), in more recent years some recognition has been afforded to Elizabeth O'Farrell and her contributions before, during and after the Rising....

Pretty sure this is a Thornback Ray tail/spine. The discards always make me sad and I imagine seeing these beautiful creatures swimming in clear waters.

Whatever you can do,

or believe you can do, begin it.

For boldness has genius, power and magic in it.

This little Swainson's Francolin got the scare of his life.. I had silently crept up to him and he peacefully kept pecking in the ground until he heard the first burst of the shutter.. He jumped a foot high, only to continue fouraging immediately afterwards.. It all went so quick that I hadn't even seen it through the viewfinder. Only later on the camera's display I saw this 'hands up'-surrender.

Yesterday I returned home after having been away for 5 weeks.

The whole trip has been totally unbelievable. Never in my dreams I could have foreseen that I, one day, would spend 5 weeks in a row on the beautiful African continent. I've spent one week in Botswana in the fantastic Mashatu Game Reserve and 4 weeks in Mala Mala in South Africa. My head is still brimming with all the fantastic things I've seen and experienced. (And so is my hard disk.. :-)) It will take ages to select and process but I'll get there. You can follow my (slow) progress on my Blog

Meanwhile I'll try and catch up with all of your wonderful shots I've missed while I was away.

Missing Winter all-ready.

I could stay lost in this moment forever..."

Still going through the archives, though I might try and head out tomorow afternoon. I might go insane if I don't get out with the camera soon... :P
