SUPPORTING VULNERABLE WIDOWS TO RISE AGAINST ADVERSITY TO RECLAIM THEIR RIGHTS AND REBUILD THEIR LIVES

Maurine Ochieng’ was customarily married to the late Maurice Odero Ochieng’. Together, they had two daughters. Before her husband’s demise, the family lived in Naivasha where the husband had a carpentry business. Life was so good and her relationship with the in-laws was impeccable; they lived with one of the in-laws in her house in Naivasha.

After her husband’s death in May 2001, the family moved to their ancestral home. Maurine’s father-in-law directed the driver who was carrying her household items to park the car right in front of his door instead of Maurine’s. Maurine only realized this after two days when she was looking for a change of clothes. She was afraid to ask because mourners were still present at the homestead an opted to borrow some clothes from her sister, with the hope of resolving the matter after the funeral.

Two days after the funeral, before she could approach her father-in-law about her stuff, a brother-in-law came and asked her for money she received from the mourners. She told him she did not have any money and that is when all hell broke loose. All the in-laws came and started removing everything from her house. On inquiring why that was happening, her father-in-law told her that those were his late son's properties and that she had no say whatsoever. They warned her not to expect any piece of land from them, as she did not come with any from her parents. Then, they chased her away.

The matter was presented to the area chief who asked the widow to have the case solved at the family level. This approach did not bear any fruit. After being introduced to KELIN by the same chief, Maurine was linked up with Kabondo elders. They brought the family together and arbitrated the case. As a result, her father-in-law allocated her some land.

In 2012, KELIN and OSIEA collaborated to give Maurine and her daughters a fresh start. Maurine found hope in a new home that has changed her life completely. She now lives happily with her daughters and sells groceries at Chabera market to earn a living. Her first-born daughter is in high school and she is glad to pay the school fees from her business savings. The last-born daughter is in primary school.

Through the Cultural Structures project, KELIN has innovatively worked with the Luo Council of Elders to address the injustices against widows by facilitating the mediation of their cases. This has been made possible through the provisions of Article 159 of the Constitution of Kenya that provides for alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. As a result, the cases of over 714 widows have been mediated by the elders as of the year 2020, leading to the successful reconciliation with their families and communities and resettlement in their matrimonial land. A compendium of cases highlights some of these successful cases; a copy is available here: bit.ly/348jacv.

In an ideal setting, KELIN’s mandate would end at the point the widows’ access justice. However, the lack of a home means they are not fully enjoying their property rights. This spurs us to forge ahead and identify partners who will collaborate with us in finding a solution that will ensure the widows have homes and are thus empowered to take back control over their livelihoods.

Read more about our journey in providing homes for widowed households through this link: bit.ly/2qRb2i9 and join us in securing the livelihoods of more vulnerable widows. KELIN remains dedicated to reclaiming rights and rebuilding lives.

265th SUPPORT GROUP GEORGIA NATIONAL GUARD ARMORY, Metter, Georgia, May 3, 2014 – The change of responsibility for the Georgia Army National Guard’s 265th Support Group (Regional), 78th Troop Command, Saturday morning, between command sergeants major Lynward A. Hall and Joe A. Jimmerson brought a new layer of expertise and recommitment to excellence for the combat proven unit located in Metter, Georgia. As the first Georgia Army National Guard unit to be awarded a Navy Presidential Unit Citation for combat support to the U.S. Marine Corps’ 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) in 2008, Hall congratulated the unit for consistently exceeding not only the standard set by the U.S. Army but those, they themselves established. In his emotional farewell he also thanked everyone for being what he described as his unsuspecting mentor.“I believe what makes a man, or woman, successful is the folks they surround themselves with,” Hall said. “My privilege to rise through the ranks with this organization and grow with you is what has made me successful.”Ceremoniously passing the noncommissioned officers’ sword of responsibility the incoming senior enlisted advisor, Jimmerson, challenged his fellow Soldiers to ‘pack it up’ and stay the course. “All you have accomplished and all you have worked toward, that battle rhythm will not change,” Jimmerson charged. “My expectation of the 265th is that you strive and desire to do better and achieve.”Jimmerson will now lead the 265th Support Group in support of the South Dakota National Guard’s annual training operation ‘Golden Coyote’ beginning May 31. Protect Mother Earth. End Climate Capitalism. Support Community Solutions.

Mass Action at the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco on September 13, 2018.

The twin crises of capitalism and climate change are destroying the planet, burning our homes, and flooding our communities. We are witnessing unprecedented harm, from the hurricanes that ravaged Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and the Gulf Coast, to wildfires destroying communities along the west coast. At the same time, California passed climate laws (AB 398) that subsidize, and allow the world’s largest corporations to continue destroying our climate and communities with pollution and poverty

In September, Governor Jerry Brown convened the Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) in San Francisco to promote his “real climate leadership” credentials on a global stage. But Jerry Brown’s promotion of carbon trading markets and other perverse subsidies to oil, gas and other polluting corporations only perpetuates climate change, and decimates Indigenous communities and Native nations, communities of color and other working class peoples throughout California and around the world.

Such incentives for “climate capitalism” will turn frontline communities into sacrifice zones for decades to come, and despite Brown’s attempts to prove he is different from Trump and the dark forces of climate denial, his “climate leadership” promotes the same corporate agenda – aimed at expanding the dig, burn, drive, dump industries destroying our communities and the air, land and water we depend on.

On September 13th, we demanded that elected leaders stand with our communities on the streets, and not with the climate profiteers at the GCAS.
