U.S. Army 1st Lt. Joseph Varin and Master Sgt. Brian Deese discuss plans as U.S. Soldiers from the South Carolina National Guard's 218th Regiment (Leadership) Regional Training Institute repair a section of road damaged by floodwaters in Lexington County, S.C., Oct. 20, 2015. The recent historic flood in S.C. caused washouts and severe damage to transportation infrastructure all across the Midlands, requiring much-needed rapid repairs by engineer units to assist counties and restore normal operations. The South Carolina National Guard has been activated to support state and county emergency management agencies and local first responders as historic flooding impacts counties statewide. Screw Pickets were used as supports for Barbed Wire Defences and were introduced in 1915 as a replacement for timber posts. The French name for this type of steel stake was ''Queue de Cochon'' or pigtail, the World War One steel stake became known in the British Army as a ''Corkscrew Picket'' which was made from a steel bar which had its bottom end bent into a spiral coil, it had three (or sometimes four) loops or eyes, one at the top, one at midway and one just above the corkscrew spiral, the final product could be up to 8ft long.

Groups of soldiers known as ''Wiring Parties'' went out at night into no man's land to position these supports, they later strung the Barbed Wire through the loops to form a Defensive Wire Obstacle as a protection for their trench line. The British called this type of stake a Corkscrew Picket because it was screwed into the ground rather than hammered in as the timber posts had been (the hammering made a loud noise, usually attracting enemy fire !) The Screw Pickets replaced the timber posts (although Screw Pickets were less rigid than timber posts) but they could be installed rapidly and silently. The Screw Picket was screwed into the ground by turning it in a clockwise direction using an entrenching tool's handle or a stick inserted in the bottom eye of the picket for leverage, the bottom eye was used in order to avoid bending the vertical bar of the the Corkscrew Picket. A wiring party is described in detail in the World War One novel ''All Quiet on the Western Front'' by contemporary author Erich Maria Remarque.

THE BLEEDERS.

Those pesky little Bleeders thought they could come down from Glasgow to entertain the Paisley fans as they supported the punk legend and ex Sex Pistols original bass player Glen Matlock. Well they did and they looked like they had a great time too boot…..

Jackson Harvey and Daniel McGuiga’s guitar and drum band went on stage just after 8pm dressed in bark capes with bleeding black and red eye makeup after Drummer Daniel told me their style of music was a mix of punk and country. Both members joked with themselves and the fans in between songs while Daniels guitar went throw a bass and guitar amp resulting in the lower strings sounding like a bass as he played single notes. And for a two peace band they had a full lively sound while mixing in samples from kids yelling to segments of music that had the crowds well entertained.

At one point in the show Jack ran off stage in the middle of one of their songs and straight into the toilet while still playing his guitar that had the audience laughing. Only for Daniel to say on his return, “I hope you washed your hands” that brought further laughter from the crowds. Drummer Daniel later told me Jack got a new wireless radio jack plug for his guitar and it was all spontaneous and good banter with the fans.

This once four piece band exited stage left around 8.40pm and in no way were intimidated by the fans or what was still to come and why everyone was at the Bungalow bar as they left with a smile on their faces and chuffed to have supported on of punks greats bands members…

A cracking night folks and all good fun and why people need to get out their and support their local venues and live music..

Couchville Cedar Glade is a 140-acre natural area in Davidson and Wilson Counties and is contiguous with the east boundary of Long Hunter State Park. Couchville supports one of the largest known and best quality populations of the Tennessee coneflower (Echinacea tennesseensis), which was delisted as a federally endangered species in September 2011. Couchville also provides one of the finest examples of a glade-barrens complex and protects many rare plant species. The glades are distributed where limestone outcropping and shallow soils limit growth of perennial plants and support annual species like leavenworthia, sporobolus, and sedum. The barrens species, that also includes Tennessee coneflower, occur where soils increase and grasses like little bluestem and side oats grama become dominant. The glades and barrens interface forming a complex. There are small woodland patches surrounding the glade-barrens complex with some shrubby vegetation present in the barrens. There are also some seasonal wet areas where small sedge openings occur and where an ephemeral stream habitat supports a small colony of the federally endangered leafy prairie clover (Dalea foliosa).

Another interesting habitat occurs along the west boundary of Couchville adjacent to Long Hunter State Park. This area supports a mature oak-hickory forest of which includes large shagbark hickories and impressive large oaks such as chinkapin, Shumard, white, and post oak. The forest is in a karst area where there are sinkhole depressions and limestone formations that support a solid layer of moss, sedum, shooting star, and columbine. This feature appears as a natural rock garden when conditions are moist in the spring.

The protection of Couchville began in 1994 with an initiative by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) of Tennessee to acquire 43 acres through corporate sponsorship provided by American Airlines, Cracker Barrel, and Bell South. The State acquired this property from TNC and designated it as a state natural area in 1995. Additional acreage has been obtained by the State since 1994 including land to protect more Tennessee coneflower through grant assistance from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

I'm a little bit fascinated by members of the rhythm section of a rock band. You're in the background, both musically and physically - you're in a rock band but you're not really a rock star. You're not so much in as behind the spotlight.

Bassists, especially, interest me: there you are with a bitchin' looking guitar, but you're looking down, your motions are slow, even methodicaly, while the singer and lead guitarist swagger and flail. And the rock could go on without you.

Perhaps it's my years of working in a support-staff role, my own efforts and successes being merely suplementary to the orgainizations public goals.

In 2018, Pillaar#12 was a two-day festival under the bridge of the Belgian A12 in Wilrijk. A total of 150 graffiti artists and young creatives painted the 82 pillars of the bridge. The artists came from the Netherlands, France and many Belgian cities. Everyone was given carte blanche, although there were some color restrictions. For example, white, grey, red and black were used almost exclusively for recognisability. It can take a while to find a particular work. It is therefore a long bridge with a lot of works.
