Owners of the BMW 3 Series (E46 models) have been reporting cracks and damage in the rear subframe area of their vehicles. The issue was also common on the earlier 3 Series models and unfortunately, have reoccurred with the E46 from 1999-2006. This issue specifically appears in the rear mounting points of the subframe, which can tear out from their position in the sheet metal. This occurs as the rear differential transmits the torsional load from the engine through the subframe, and then, into the chassis of the vehicle. This constant abuse leads to fatigue in the metal, causing cracks and separation from the chassis.

The parts used for this repair includes:

Active Autowerke (www.activeautowerke.com):

This is an EG6 version of the WS2 which bolts up perfectly for our USDM cx/dx hatches. One hanger isn't utilized but it still hangs right. Welding in a second hanger bar at the resonator section will make it perfect

I always learn something new at these shows I never knew.

During the presentation after the unveiling, Kurt Hofbauer talked about the restoration process. Turns out, the engine bay of the original 1962 Chevy II, a semi-unit body with a bolt-on front subframe and engine cradle, was intended to hold either the standard I-4 or optional I-6 engines -- never a V8.

When the decision was made at GM to shove a V8 into the top-of-the-line Chevy II Nova, things were a little tight. The problem was solved at the engineering level by offsetting the entire engine slightly to the passenger side of the car. Apparently, it's derailed quite a few aftermarket and DIY 6 to V8 engine swaps, and it caused some headaches for Brian Dinsmore at Heartland Autobody in Logan, IA, who restored this car.

If you open the hood of a factory V8 Chevy II or Nova and sight down the front fascia and windshield ridges and the air cleaner wingnut, you can see the offset, even without measuring the clearances on each side.

Old Celestron C8 SCT (1980's era), Antares f6.4 reducer, JMI focuser, ASI533MC Pro, iOptron HAE29 mount. Thirty 120 second subframes. Calibrated with dark, flat, and bias frames. FOV 32’ x 32’.

I used for the first time a mini-pc mounted to the scope to control the mount, main camera, and auto-guider using NINA. I was able to monitor and control the equipment remotely with an iPad. It was quite nice to be able to sit indoors out of the cold with a hot cup of tea once I got everything calibrated and working right.

I am a bit slow. I was perplexed that my images were coming out in black and white. That was because I did not properly debayer the images during processing. To correct that problem, I will now shoot FIT files since my stacking software is smarter than I and will debayer FIT files automatically in the proper sequence during processing.

pulling the subframe out from underneath. Landmark!

Another night of data added, bringing the total number of subframes up to 29.

This larger number of lights has helped smooth out the background. It's also helped identify the problem areas with other lights and the library of darks. The amp glow in the northern section of the frame comes from bad darks. I'll have to make a few new ones that match the temperature range of 14-17 C. Also, there were light leaks getting in on some of the subs, causing large arcs to streak across the field.

I did a little different processing on this image to try to get more from the better data. I applied a curve to the image after DBE and masked stretch. There were two curves - one for RGB and another for L. The L curve was a little hotter, bringing up some lightness of small stars. I also added some passes of sharpening and better noise reduction.

As usual, I brought the tif files into LR for a final tweak before uploading.
