I always learn something new at these shows I never knew.

 

During the presentation after the unveiling, Kurt Hofbauer talked about the restoration process. Turns out, the engine bay of the original 1962 Chevy II, a semi-unit body with a bolt-on front subframe and engine cradle, was intended to hold either the standard I-4 or optional I-6 engines -- never a V8.

 

When the decision was made at GM to shove a V8 into the top-of-the-line Chevy II Nova, things were a little tight. The problem was solved at the engineering level by offsetting the entire engine slightly to the passenger side of the car. Apparently, it's derailed quite a few aftermarket and DIY 6 to V8 engine swaps, and it caused some headaches for Brian Dinsmore at Heartland Autobody in Logan, IA, who restored this car.

 

If you open the hood of a factory V8 Chevy II or Nova and sight down the front fascia and windshield ridges and the air cleaner wingnut, you can see the offset, even without measuring the clearances on each side.

Hook gear had to be raised up to clear the shock absorbers on the 2nd steer and because it was made to fit an old Foden I think it was wider than the Scania chassis rails so extra brackets were made to carry it.

We now have the axles, wheels, steering, suspension, radiator, engine, drive shafts, gearbox and exhaust system fitted.

 

This is the view of the top of the structure, which will be hidden by the lower deck floor. It shows the many screw holes that will be hidden by the floor.

The vertical grooves, or notches, in the "cap" must line up with the dimples in the subframe, otherwise the bushing won't slide down when the bolt is tightened.

These are the tool directions. The installation instructions go against common sense. In order for the tool to function, the top piece (#R) must sit on top of the collar (#J) which sits on top of the subframe.

Quite a lot of high level cloud, light wind and not great seeing. My FWHM values are quite a lot worse than the comparable image with the 350D. But still, it's a first light picture!

 

Quite a learning curve going from the DSLR to the dedicated Astro camera. Quite glad I went OSC before Mono...
