Most of the suspension parts removed from the car (this isn't all of them - I'm sure only Jaguar made a more complicated rear suspension than Rover). At the front is the subframe that bothered the WoF tester, at rear is the De Dion tube (a clever means of keeping the rear wheels vertical throughout the suspension travel).
This will gain some additional space at the top of the lowered crossmember. The goal is to make enough space available between the chassis and the subframe to fit the special tool. In retrospect I am not sure this step was necessary.
Owners of the BMW 3 Series (E46 models) have been reporting cracks and damage in the rear subframe area of their vehicles. The issue was also common on the earlier 3 Series models and unfortunately, have reoccurred with the E46 from 1999-2006. This issue specifically appears in the rear mounting points of the subframe, which can tear out from their position in the sheet metal. Exhibited alongside London Transport NHG 732P at the 1976 Commercial Motor Show were these front and rear suspension sub frames.
The exhaust muffler is merely an inch or so under the subframe. Lower the exhaust to make place for the subframe to lower. I am not sure if this was needed.

I thought that by lowering the trailing arm I would gain some additional space for the subframe, but in retrospect this turned out to be unnecessary. I did not do the same on the right side and the subframe dropped just fine.
While he was waiting for the guys to prep the body, Dave started assembling the various components and then the subframe, which holds everything forward of the firewall. This will let him bolt this subsystem to the tub and mount the bonnet, and have all the little pieces already in place (and in the correct order).
He pointed out a number of spots where it's easy to use the wrong bolt or to attach smaller pieces in a logical way but then find out the last bolt is inaccessible. After doing this a while he just steps through it naturally. Desi says he just gets in the zone...

Hook gear had to be raised up to clear the shock absorbers on the 2nd steer and because it was made to fit an old Foden I think it was wider than the Scania chassis rails so extra brackets were made to carry it.

Quite a lot of high level cloud, light wind and not great seeing. My FWHM values are quite a lot worse than the comparable image with the 350D. But still, it's a first light picture!
Quite a learning curve going from the DSLR to the dedicated Astro camera. Quite glad I went OSC before Mono...
