Gold King mine owned this pre-1914. The Hanes Copper Mining Company purchased it until closing in 1953. This area was a shanty town with mostly Mexican population. In 1982 Don and his wife rented the 10~ acres and started clearing it. There was a lot of illegal dumping they had to haul away so they could move their junk in.
Now Don and his wife have this land as an odd "museum" of broken and falling apart stuff.
The land still belongs to a mining company.
A few days ago one of my flickr friends contacted me and said he had a bunch of stuff he wanted to get rid of and asked me if I would be interested in any of it.
So last night I went to his studio (which is in an awesome building) and sorted through a few boxes and found some great anatomy books, books with bug images, old LIFE magazines, etc. He also gave me a bunch of canvases and panel boards, which was super kind of him to part with.
I can't wait to start going through everything and get to cutting! Paper cutting is one of my favorite things to do (anyone remember my "operation paper cut" days?) so i'm pretty excited.
Thank you Derek!!!
No trick photography. Just a cat who sleeps really soundly and 13 stuffed animals, added one at a time
In case one's illiterate, here's a diorama to illustrate the name of the resort.

This stuffed animal is named BuckleBear. He is a stuffed polar bear from the ice cream company Graeter's, as is indicated by "Graeter's" written on his scarf and script "G"s on the bottoms of his feet. I acquired BuckleBear in August 2015.
