First shoot for JD, and he stepped into it like a pro. We started with natural light to keep things relaxed, then shifted into a more sculpted look using the Godox AD600 and a Phottix modifier. Shot mostly on the Nikon Z8 with the 85mm f/1.2, tethered to Capture One on the iPad. Mixed in a few frames on the Fuji GFX for added depth and tone. Simple setup, strong energy — the kind of session that reminds me why I love doing this.

We had to shoot a thing for Iron Man, and they wanted to cast everyday looking guys that were fit. Enter Andy, he had a really peculiar look that made me laugh, kind of this Steve Carrell 40 Year Old Virgin look.

Not the greatest studioportrait. It depicts 5 men posing in a studio with Gew98 and presumably S84/98aA bayonets. They are in full marching order and are wearing the M1907/10 Feldrock and spiked helmets with cloth covers.

Old man flinching from another of life's blows. Like the Buddha says, life is suffering.

A shot from my low-key and baseball photoshoot with lovely Lane Schwartz on 2/19/23 at Lunatic Lens Studio. Hair and makeup by the very talented Aubrey Foster.

A single AB1600 light fired into a gridded 1'x6' Westcott softbox, camera left. Triggered with a Pocket Wizard.

Canon 5DS with Canon 50mm f1.8 STM lens. ISO 200, f5.0 at 1/200 second.

A great afternoon's fun with my niece Elle. This was my first photoshoot in my new "studio" aka my spare room. Hopefully every model will be as enthusiastic and give me as many laughs as Elle did.

A studio portrait with strong contrasts – black outfit, bold lipstick, and oversized sunglasses against a vibrant red background.

Timmy was 16 and had just run away from home to experiment with his sexuality, drugs and the freedom a town like Madison affords. He tried, at all costs, to be “different than the normal American farm boy.” He got into punk music, spiked his hair, and played in a band. He moved to Washington D.C. and then to San Francisco where he met a faction of gay punks into speed and cocaine and he had a pet rat that he’d let sit on his shoulder when he rode the subway, which almost always disgusted somebody.

He lived with his pet rat downstairs from Angie who also had a pet rat. When he moved to Italy, he left his rat to live with Angie’s rat in her sofa. The two rats died together. Angie put them in a plastic bag with a brick and threw them off the Golden Gate Bridge.

Shortly after Tim settled into life in Milan where he lived with his lover, taught English and worked very seriously on his painting, he discovered he had AIDS. He died at age 30.

A couple of years ago we ran into Angie who’d left San Francisco and come to Milwaukee where she bought a house and operated her own bead shop. She was working at a natural food store deli counter and had made the studded bra she’s wearing. The knife and cutting board are her favorites and things she’s had with her since living in San Francisco. A few days later she quit her job in the deli to take a higher paying administrative job at a gasoline distributor.

Another example of "acting" in front of the camera. All I said was, "Make like you know something nobody else does" and she did this pose.

Kinda' like the FarSide cartoon where all the lemmings are jumping into the water and there's one lemming wearing a life preserver with "that look".

Nikon D1x and 20-35 zoom.

Lighting info: One AlienBee B1600 with large softbox higher up on camera right, and another AlienBee B1600 with medium softbox on camera right down towards floor. Applied diffuse glow effect in PS.
