Mount Stuart House and Gardens are located on the beautiful island of Bute. Bute is only 33 miles from Glasgow. It is the most accessible of the westerly isles from the Scottish Central Belt. It’s a peaceful island haven, just a stone’s throw away from the mainland.

The alpine or subalpine larch trees (Lyall’s larch, Larix Lyallii) attract thousands of hikers every fall.

Monday, October 7 I hiked to Ingalls Lake, located in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. The trailhead is located in the Teanaway River drainage, Washington State. The round-trip hike is about 9 miles with an elevation gain of about 2,800 feet. Ingalls Lake elevation is 6,466 feet. Crowds visit the area because of the beautiful golden larches in October. I didn't count but I am sure at least 200 people hiked to the lake or perhaps a few stopped short of the lake and enjoyed the views of Mount Stuart and the larch tree. The hike is strenuous. NS 12Z passes the CPLs at Stuarts Draft on a hot and muggy summer morning. Unfortunately, progress has been made in the slow signal replacement program along the Shenandoah Line, and replacements are standing here now a year later.

Train: NS 12Z with NS 8096 (ES44AC).

Posed street portrait taken for my 100 Strangers project in Glasgow, Scotland.

Stuart, a familiar face and inspirational man in Glasgow, and number 72 in my 100 Strangers project here on Flickr. This is the colour version of the original shot that I uploaded from my brief city centre shoot with Stuart. Head to my 100 Strangers album to read his story if you like. Proving that the affordable 40mm pancake lens can be good for portraits. Enjoy!

16 mile hike with lots of fog...

Just a few minutes after dawn, NS 202 slices through the still-darkened landscape past the CPL bracket mast at Stuarts Draft. A matched set of SD70ACes leads this lengthy train north toward Shenandoah, and eventually Harrisburg. 202 and counterpart 201 are the only intermodal trains to use the lower part of the H-Line, which otherwise is limited to manifests and the occasional unit train. They're hot on the heels of northbound manifest 12Z, and are passing a 15T that's waiting in the siding right behind me.

Mount Stuart is a mountain in the Cascade Range, in the U.S. state of Washington. It is the second highest non-volcanic peak in the state, after Bonanza Peak and seventh-highest overall.

This is the second time I have tried this picture and I think it is time to concede defeat. Apologies, Stuart - I seem to have given you a hideous birthmark on the side of your nose! :)

Stuart was taking a bath and was interrupted by something he saw outside.

We are in my temporary bedroom as our remodeling is going slower than we thought. But it's going to be so nice when done.

I finally have gotten the hang of this laptop and found my cable so I could upload my photos from my camera. The only thing I'm missing is my good photo editor. It's not installed on this computer as I couldn't find the instillation disc.

Hagerstown to Cumberland local D721 emerges from Stuart Tunnel on a hot and hazy summer afternoon. This YN2 pair of CSX 386/502 had been on D795 the day prior, which I also had the opportunity to shoot. As the number of units in YN2 paint continues to decline, it was pleasant to see this pairing twice in as many days.

The sun rises in the Shenandoah Valley over Stuarts Draft as the now fallen N&W protect the control point.

Let's start the weekend with some Stuart

With one of two Stuarts living in the house we thought this one was the best for the blue challenge!

"Isn't this just amazing, Cleo?!" Stuart was very excited as he walked around and around the faerie home. "We should be very careful here. Don't break anything, and don't make scary noises, in case the faeries who live here are watching to see what kind of little bears we are!"

"I will be careful, Stuart! It almost looks like it grew here!" said Cleo.

"I think when it's possible, faeries do use natural things for homes, and if they build, they often use bark and moss and vines and . . . well, other natural kind of things." Stuart said, somewhat less confident.

"I think you must be right," said Cleo. And I bet they use flowers and other things, too, Stuart! You are so smart!"

"I'm not really sure about all of it, but I have seen pictures in books and read things. I think we should go home and tell Mama, Cleo. And we don't want to scare the faeries off, in case they are afraid of us."

"I think you are right, Stuart. Let's go. We can tell Mama what we found. Do you think the faeries would like us to visit?"

"Maybe, but we should wait for an invitation. I have read that they are very private."

"Okay, but I hope we can visit again when they are home!!" said Cleo.

Stuart took her by the hand and they headed home.

Stuart D10 steam engine with boiler feed pump and reversing gear. Setting up the valve timing on compressed air. A lockdown project. I built the engine in basic form about five years ago and it was getting tatty from many demonstrations so serviced it and fitted the additional controls. It runs nicely and a popular model used by RC boat modellers. The reversing lever doesn't give great speed control so I would recommend using two servos, one for reversing on a digital three position control and the second giving linear motion to a needle valve on the steam inlet. I'm going to use this engine for another project and sometime it will be driving a scale model rolling mill.

Model is two cylinder, simple expansion, double acting with slide valves. A very popular model and has been around for years. Castings, materials and drawings all available from Stuart Models. Needs a small metalworking lathe and preferably, access to a milling machine to build.
