Minerva Terrace and Mound Terrace are two of the most iconic travertine formations in Yellowstone’s Mammoth Hot Springs—each showcasing the dynamic, ever-changing nature of geothermal artistry.
• Named for the Roman goddess of wisdom and art, Minerva Terrace is renowned for its dramatic cascades of white and colored travertine.
• Formation: Created by hot water rising through limestone, depositing calcium carbonate as it cools. This builds the chalky white terraces seen today.
• Activity Cycles: Minerva goes through periods of intense flow and complete dormancy. In active years, water spills over the boardwalks; in dry years, the layered structure becomes more visible.
• Coloration: Thermophilic microorganisms add hues of orange, brown, and green depending on water temperature and chemistry.
• Accessibility: Located in the Lower Terraces, easily viewed from boardwalks. The trail includes steep stairs and is strenuous for some visitors.

The structure of this leaf cluster struck me so much that I couldn't bear to start my car (it was on the hood). Something about the way the leaves are growing off the thin branch is fascinating, and almost creepy, to me.
