The Western and Southern Life Insurance Company headquarters are located in this beautiful structure at the corner of Broadway Street and West 4th Street in Downtown Cincinnati, near Lytle Park. The Western and Southern Life Insurance Company was founded in 1888, and has grow into a massive and powerful corporation, which also runs the Western and Southern Open tennis tournament annually in nearby Mason, Ohio. Constructed in 1915, their main headquarters is a beautiful three-story Neoclassical-style building features colonnades on its main faces with ionic columns, flanked with protruding sections of the building between the colonnades and at the corners, which feature simpler, Doric-style pilasters. The third floor of the building serves as a cap on the structure, and features an ornate and uniquely detailed parapet that demarcates the top of the building. The structure is one of several that Western and Southern occupy in the area, with several Art Deco-style structures from the 1920s and 1930s across a mid-block alley housing additional office space, as well as a large, boxy, limestone-clad structure from the mid-20th Century at Broadway and 5th Street that is directly attached to their main building. None of these buildings are unattractive, though they are less significant than the main building and the Woodford Building at the corner of East 4th and Lawrence. Though they were instrumental in preserving Lytle Park from being destroyed for Interstate 71, the company more recently seems to have turned their back on their beautiful historic neighborhood, instead opting to move the historic district away from their complex, likely in hopes of eventually building new office space. When that does happen, I hope that it will compliment the existing structures and the Park, rather than overshadowing it or being incompatible with the historic nature of the area, and that they understand the fact that they have stewardship and a responsibility to maintain a small treasure trove of several architectural works in the form of their two most significant buildings. All I ask is to do high-quality, well-planned, context-sensitive development.
