Ripple marks in the Cambrian of Tennessee, USA.
Ripple marks are moderately common sedimentary structures in the rock record. They indicate the presence of a current at the time of sediment deposition. Asymmetrical ripples have a long side and a short side, as seen in cross-section. Symmetrical ripples are more or less evenly shaped in cross-section view. Asymmetrical ripples form in a one-direction current by wind or water. Symmetrical ripples for in a back-and-forth, two-direction current in very shallow water by wave action.
This rock is eroded from the Rome Formation in northeastern Tennessee. The Rome Formation in the Appalachian Basin ranges in age from upper Lower Cambrian to Middle Cambrian to possibly lower Upper Cambrian. These ripples are close to being symmetrical.
Stratigraphy: float from the Rome Formation, upper Lower Cambrian
Locality: roadcut on the northeastern side of Route 25E through Comby Ridge, northwest of Raven Hill & southeast of Tazewell, Tennessee, USA

We're looking straight up at the entrance. Each of the interior splines at the apexes of the triangular facets duplicates the feature seen here. The colored glass inserts run from bottom to top (and are much more effective in the interior space).
