L'allocco di Lapponia (Strix nebulosa) è un grande gufo, distribuito in tutta l'Emisfero Nord, nelle foreste di conifere precedenti alla tundra. Ha abitudini strettamente notturne.
Gli adulti hanno una grande mole, una testa arrotondata di colore grigio, ha sopracciglia bianche che costeggiano gli occhi fino alla base del becco. Questo gufo si é adattato molto bene alla visuale notturna, ha infatti grossi occhi puntati in avanti di colore o giallo oro o giallastro, sono dotati di cellule particolari che catturano la luce (circa 56.000 per millimetro quadrato), anche la più piccola e hanno pupille nere.
Questi uccelli sanno aspettare, ascoltare, guardare la preda, e poi, appena trovano il momento giusto, spiccano il volo che è silenziosissimo e svelto per afferrare la preda. La loro grande sensibilità è dovuta alle rughe del viso, coperte di penne, che spingono le onde sonore verso le orecchie, così il gufo può localizzare le prede, gli occhi sono specializzati nel vedere solo con la luce lunare e quella stellare, durante le ore in cui si caccia. A volte può prendere, se ha fortuna, altre prede quali lepri, talpe, toporagni, donnole, tordi, tetraone, piccoli falchi e anatre.
La raccolta di legname è, forse, la più grande minaccia per questa specie. Intensificare la raccolta vuole significare ridurre il legname vivo e aumentare quello morto, molto spesso sono i grandi alberi cavi, utilizzati per la nidificazione e usati dai giovani per addestrarsi prima di poter volare (e per avere copertura e protezione), ad essere abbattuti.
Der Habichtskauz oder Uralkauz (Strix uralensis) ist eine große Eule aus der Gattung Strix innerhalb der Familie der Eigentlichen Eulen (Strigidae). Er ähnelt dem Waldkauz (Strix aluco), ist aber kontrastreicher gefärbt, bedeutend größer und oft mehr als doppelt so schwer wie dieser. Das geschlossene Verbreitungsgebiet der Art liegt im borealen Waldgürtel der Paläarktis und reicht ostwärts bis Korea und Japan. Zusätzlich bestehen Reliktvorkommen in den Karpaten, den Beskiden und im Dinarischen Gebirge. Im deutsch-österreichisch-tschechischen Grenzgebiet (Bayerischer Wald, Böhmerwald und Šumava) laufen zum Teil erfolgreiche Wiederansiedelungsversuche. Zurzeit werden bis zu 15 Unterarten beschrieben; mindestens 8 sind allgemein anerkannt, wovon S. u. liturata und S. u. macroura in Europa brüten.
Die Färbung der Unterflügel und des Schwanzes weist eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit mit der junger Habichte (Accipiter gentilis) auf, ein Umstand, dem der deutsche Trivialname Rechnung trägt.

One of the smallest females that I've ever seen. She's not much bigger than a little owl... and has three owlets....
Taken at a park in Vancouver, BC, Canada, on May 15 2013. I rounded a corner and found myself face-to-face with this Barred Owl. After about an hour, the bird spotted a squirrel and went from perch to perch trying to catch it, so I managed to photograph it in many different spots and poses.
