Small lion cub closely following its mum to a safe hiding place.

It shows I've been too busy the last few months: I 'discovered' more pics of the young lion cubs this weekend (after I posted the picture before this one), and there are quite a few good ones there...

They were so close to our vehicle (10m and less) that I had to swap lenses: the 300+1.7TC was simply too much. By the time the 120-300+1.4TC was on I hardly had time to zoom out, hence the missing rear end of the little fellow.

Spotted in Masai Mara, a lioness taking here three very young (~3 weeks) cubs to safe hiding in a dry river bed. We only had several seconds to enjoy the sight AND take some pictures of it...

Striders of Croydon - Croydon Harriers Mob Match at South Norwood Parkrun.

Courtesy Evergreen Films website:

Strider serves as a mobile production and post-production facility throughout the coastal waters of Southern and South Central Alaska (from Ketchikan to Kodiak). Strider is a Viking 74 Sport Fisher with the enclosed bridge (after all, we are talking about Alaska here) and a pair of 2000HP MTU Diesel engines. Typically cruising at 25-28 knots, Strider allows us to reach remote locations quickly, outrunning the weather when required.

Strider has all the latest electronics (Dual radar systems, dual depth finder systems, 360 degree Sonar, thermal imaging system, etc) and a full edit suite with a high-end MacPro system with FCP and REDcine to support dailies as well as rough editing. A 65” Panasonic Professional Plasma Display with 12-bit color supports reviewing of dailies.

For production Strider is equipped with an adjustable bow jib with a Cineflex mount. Most of the time, we leave the Cineflex gimbal mounted on the bow for weeks or months at a time, shooting from the comfort of the Wheelhouse where dual 24-inch monitors and a Leader waveform monitor enable us to capture perfect images. The bow jib can be adjusted so that the Cineflex gimbal can be positioned down near water level or 5 feet above the foredeck.

Strider also carries a 20-foot skiff (RIB) named Frodo. Frodo is also equipped with a bow jib, allowing us to sneak into shallow areas with a low profile to capture unique shots that have never been seen before.

Strider is also equipped to serve as a dive boat for underwater filming, with an on board compressor and storage for tanks. During the shooting of Icy Killers (Summer 2008) we often had three divers aboard, plus crew to operate the boat and cinematographers to shoot with the Cineflex or shore-based cameras – all at the same time.

Strider is currently in use during filming Accidental Quest for Enlightenment as well as several other features.

LANDOVER, Md. -- Jay Gruden's Washington Redskins have not won two games in a row all season. They followed a 33-point victory with a 28-point loss. They are 5-1 at home, 0-5 on the road. They tend to have a hard time running the ball -- and stopping the run.

And yet, for all of their deficiencies and inconsistency, the Redskins are right there at the top of the NFC East.

Kirk Cousins connected with DeSean Jackson for a 63-yard touchdown pass and scored on a fourth-down quarterback sneak, Washington intercepted Eli Manning three times, and the Redskins withstood the latest miraculous catch by Odell Beckham Jr. to hold on and beat the New York Giants 20-14 Sunday, pulling into a tie for first place.

Eli's interceptions dig too big a hole for Giants.

The Giants cannot win when they turn the ball over more than their opponent does. So on Sunday against Washington, they weren't able to overcome Eli Manning's three interceptions. They didn't collect any of their own. And even a fourth-quarter rally that featured another dazzling Odell Beckham Jr. touchdown catch wasn't enough.

The Redskins effort boosted by players-only meeting Saturday night.

An airing of players' comments and/or grievances helped the Redskins get on the same page for Sunday's win against the Giants.

Quinton Dunbar, Redskins resiliency lead big win over Giants.

The Washington Redskins needed more corner help this summer, thanks to a depleted roster. Undrafted rookie free-agent receiver Quinton Dunbar responded Sunday, symbolizing in many ways what the Redskins have done as a team.

"We're just in the driver's seat right now," Redskins defensive end Jason Hatcher said. "We've just got to continue winning games and driving the car -- right into the playoffs."

New York trailed 20-0 before making things interesting as Manning threw fourth-quarter TD passes of 40 yards to Rueben Randle and 21 yards to Beckham, who took off from the 2 to make a fantastic diving grab, corralling the ball with his left hand while parallel to the ground.

"What can you say about that?" Redskins left tackle Trent Williams said. "That's not human."

The Giants came in off their bye and with a chance to create space in the standings. Instead, they're 5-6, just like the Redskins, with five games remaining. The Philadelphia Eagles (4-7) and Dallas Cowboys (3-8), both routed on Thanksgiving Day, are the other members of the mediocre division.

Beckham's assessment?

"We came out flat," he said. "Too many mistakes."

On a chilly, dreary day, New York's first two possessions ended when passes by Manning went in and out of receivers' hands and were picked off -- first by linebacker Perry Riley Jr., then by cornerback Will Blackmon. And on the Giants' first drive of the second half, Manning's throw from the 4 was intercepted in the end zone by rookie Quinton Dunbar.

It was the 20th three-interception game of two-time Super Bowl MVP Manning's career; he had only six picks all season until Sunday. He wound up 26 for 51 for 321 yards; Beckham had nine catches for 142 yards.

New York's first 10 drives culminated in three turnovers and seven punts. On the team's 11th possession, Manning finally put some points on the board, hitting Randle. Then came Beckham's highlight-reel grab.

But it was too little, too late.

Washington led 17-0 at halftime, thanks in part to Cousins' 1-yard TD sneak with under 2 minutes to go that generated a full-throated chorus of "Hail to the Redskins!" As the teams headed to the locker rooms soon thereafter, fans gave a standing ovation, a rare salute to a club that has finished last in the NFC East in six of the past seven seasons.

"They done put up with a lot of stuff around here," Hatcher said.

Cousins was 20 for 29 for 302 yards, including the long TD to Jackson -- who taunted the Giants by strutting along the goal line before actually crossing it.

"A spur-of-the-moment thing. I just felt like doing it," said Jackson, who returned punts for the first time this season. "You never know what you get with me."

Cousins' most important stat was probably this: zero interceptions. When the fourth-year QB avoids getting picked off this season, Washington is 5-0; when he throws at least one interception, the team is 0-6.

All part of what's been a wildly fluctuating Redskins team in Gruden's second year.

That's why safety Dashon Goldson said he organized a players'-only meeting Saturday.

"Everybody got stuff of their chest. How they were feeling. What they thought about the team and where we're at and what we need to do to progress," Goldson said. "We're just so much up and down."

For the moment, at least, they're on the upswing.

Striding Edge - Helvellyn..

One of the reasons why I won't traverse Striding Edge on a weekend is really simple.. Too many folk on the ridge.. Its actually a straightforward ridge to traverse, you have to be carefull at 'The Bad Step', where you don't fool about....

There are folk queueing to descend the 'Bad Step'...

In Summer and dry conditions, not a problem, in Winter, it demands respect..

Wouldn't you like to be able to walk on water, even to run on it to the other side of a lake?

While I was taking pictures of the rapids, my daughter called me, all excited. She had just spotted these water striders between some rocks, where the water flowed slowly.

I made a video clip of the striders slowly floating backwards with the current, then skipping ahead a few "paces", almost precisely back to their previous spot, only to drift back again, run forward again, etc.

Incidentally, if you want to walk on water, all you have to do is lose a lot of weight and grow a few legs with special structures that trap air bubbles under them. A neat trick to maximize the area over which the weight is spread. The wikipedia page on Gerridae has additional fun details.

You have to look closely but there are some little dots making their way along the precipice here. They are people. This is Striding Edge, one way up to the top of Helvellyn. This is not the way we went up! Its pretty popular, a sort of "do you dare" path of ascent. But its also a serious bit of walking and can be dangerous. In fact, 3 people have fallen and died there this year. I couldn't decide on the best view of it. The main post has he lgth behind me and so is clear; the two below are perhaps more spectacular and more of a picture, but the light is a bit rubbish. Anyway, you get to see what its like.
