This is Striding Edge, looking west towards Helvellyn, with Red Tarn sitting below. Striding Edge is a classic scrambling route and one of the most popular ridges in the English Lake District. The edge links the summit ridge of Birkhouse Moor to Helvellyn's summit and along it’s length it narrows to sharp arête. It was long regarded as a fearful place to be avoided, and in winter conditions or strong winds it can be frightening and indeed quite dangerous. It is without doubt Helvellyn’s most dramatic feature: a narrow ridge of naked rock and a succession of jagged fangs high above and between very steep and shattered cliffs.
Striding Edge begins at “Hole-in-the-Wall” and then stretches on to the Helvellyn summit plateau. The initial part of the ridge is relatively rounded and has a good path running along it’s length. High Spying How at about 863m / 2,831 ft is the highest point on the ridge and at this point the path and the ridge begin to narrow significantly. Scramblers in search of a little more exposure and adventure will move to the top of the ridge and walk upright at the very top of the arête. The “Chicken Path” continues below the crest of the ridge for those less experienced or with less courage. Towards the end of the arête, walkers are forced to descend a short gully down the last rock tower. At this point the ridge joins the main Helvellyn massif. All that remains is a scramble up loose rocky terrain to reach the summit plateau around two hundred metres from the summit.
Striding Edge is a notorious accident spot among scramblers and deaths occur here with grim regularity. In winter conditions the climb from Striding Edge up to the summit plateau can involve an icy traverse of a dangerous cornice which, without an ice axe or crampons presents a serious obstacle that should not be attempted by the inexperienced or ill-prepared.
The famous fell walker, Alfred Wainwright was particularly fond of this ridge and describes the ascent thus: “Excitement mounts as the gap in the wall is passed through: there is a feeling that great things are ahead although as yet not fully in view. Gradually the path rises along the crest of steepening cliffs on the left and reaches the foot of an abrupt tower of rock. This has the name of High Spying How but is rarely referred to as such: to walkers coming this way it is the start of Striding Edge. In calm weather Striding Edge is an exhilarating adventure with an awkward drop at the far end the only hazard. The Edge is about 300 yards in length and so fascinating that one is tempted to go back and do it again.”
Early Halloween spooks, a relatively simple moc with (mostly) well lit photos!

Trying to keep everything scalable to Aloy. This is a good initial model to have as you can build off of it for Broadheads and Chargers
"The Star Strider is an extremely fast pursuit craft with high maneuverability thanks to it's adjustable wings. Perfect for keeping peace and order!"
I found myself disassembling my LEGO 70351 Clay's Falcon Fighter Blaster set and really liked the colors and the cockpit. So I decided to build something from it. This is the result.
The model has two large adjustable wings on either side, three adjustable fins on top and features two "hidden" spring-loaded shooters underneath. It fits Clay in full armor and has a clip for holding his sword. The model is fairly swooshable and the shooters can be activated while "flying" it with a single hand.
Please let me know what you think and what you like and don't like about it :-)
In addition to the little frog of the previous post, the small shallow pond filling a natural rock basin, also contained this pair of mating water striders. Gerridae, or water striders, are anatomically built to transfer their weight to be able to run on top of the water's surface. Wonderful balancing act - even more amazing in tandem.

Along Striding Edge on Helvellyn. I love the fact these clouds are just sitting there obscuring the summit, (which is roughly almost at the top of the actual image) - it was such a great thing to see and witness. This was taken with a 35mm camera back in 2002. I will return next year to summit this monster again! Hopefully in better weather.

This shot was taken about 400m before the end, and i like the way they are matching each other in running stride.
This was the 25th anniversary of what is Europe's largest 10 mile road race. Well done Portsmouth for hosting another great race.
Panning (fail!)
Week 14 theme
52 weeks: 2013 edition
Definitely a technical fail, but not for lack of trying, and I kind of like the way this one came out anyway...
I learned something from this exercise: panning is really difficult to get right!
Mount Helvellyn is the third highest mountain in England (950 m).
This peak in England's Lake District is best known for its dangerous Striding Edge Trail, a narrow ridge that forms the route to the top of the mountain.
