Stranger #7

I met Rama when I was in Drogheda a few weeks ago.

He spotted me taking a photo of the old St Lawrence's Gate and asked me to take his photo with the gate behind him. After I took the photo on his phone, I asked if I could take his photo for my 100 Strangers project and he willingly agreed. Originally from London, he has been living in Co Meath for 20 years. He was in Drogheda for a hospital appointment but had taken time out to visit the old gate which once formed part of the walls surrounding the town.

As she willingly agreed to let me take her photo for the 100 Strangers project, I'm not going to disagree.

Yesterday I attended an audio recording for a tv commercial, and the sound technician was Margherita. She's a lovely girl from Poland, speaking a perfect Italian and touching the mixer with poetry. "I came here for love, but in the end I stayed" few words, but a world behind. She was happy to be in the project, and then asked what she was supposed to do. I already spotted a place under the window of the studio, just placed her there and got two shots only. This one was the second, when I asked her to laugh because air seems to pop around her head when she's happy.

I saw Leonard, or Len as he was happy to be called, waiting for his wife outside Waitrose today. When I approached him, he laughed and said it was the fourth time someone had asked to take his photo! I'm not surprised as he makes for a great subject. Hope you like this as much as I do Len.

I felt a bit bad about interrupting Mia, as she was reading, but she was fine about being shot. Her whole look was stunning, but it was her boots which first caught my eye. After asking a few overly keen children to not get in the shot, we took a few frames of which this is my favourite.

When winter first started to kick in, I'd thought that my project was going to stall due to a combination of dull light, drab outfits and cold people being unwilling to spend the time. How wrong was I??

I've come to realise that winter outfits can be really expressive and individual. The light can be challenging but can also be fantastic with the sun lower in the sky causing more diffusion and I am slowly learning not to underestimate just how great people are when it comes to participating in the project.

I'd wanted to capture a lady in a fluffy fur hat for some time and Tasha fitted the bill perfectly. She was standing on a corner of Covent Garden watching the world go by. I'd seen her watching Peter approach another stranger, give his pitch and start snapping so when she saw me walk up I had the impression that she knew what was coming. She happily agreed and I was happy to get this picture. I think I'm starting to demonstrate a bit of a preference for blue eyes!!

This is Margie who volunteers in the Sunshine Gift Shop inside Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas. She's worked there the last couple of years, but volunteered there as well back in the Seventies. She told me she's not photogenic, which you can see is certainly not true. I told her she was probably a cheerleader in high school. No, a twirler, she said, for the Golden Gauchos dance team--which after checking I discovered to be at San Jacinto High School in Houston. She has lived in Temple since 1964.

I met Roman when I went to a place called Amisfield winery with my fiance to celebrate our engagement. He was the sommelier working there that night.

Normally I wouldn't count people that I met like this as a stranger, but I feel like I got to know Roman a little better than than you usually would under these circumstances.

We had dinner inside then relocated to the gorgeous courtyard overlooking a lake to have a glass of wine and take a break before dessert. Roman came out looking for a glass of wine that he had left out there and while my fiance was in the bathroom I struck up a conversation with him.

Roman is French and has been living in Queenstown for about 9 months with his Kiwi girlfriend that he met in Scotland. At the time I post this they should be winging their way back to France to teach her some french and live it up a little.

We had common ground in that he was trying to find the right time to propose to her and I had just done so the night before.

We shared a couple of great glasses of wine and talked until closing time, what a great way to meet a stranger!

Shortly after meeting Michael (#214), I saw Elliott and Nancy sitting together on a park bench. They were cousins. Elliott did most of the talking, and he was a character. He was spitting mad at the government, and the shutdown.

Elliott is a veteran, and gets benefits that pay his schooling. He is currently enrolled at a local college, working on a degree in substance abuse behavior, but his benefits were on hold because of the shutdown. Unsolicited, he pulled out a government letter and held it to my face. It stated that he was to receive about $1,500/month. But checks were not forthcoming.

Now, the character part: Usually I crop off the top of the head to bring more attention to the eyes. In this case, I wanted to leave the hat so that you could read it. Try. It’s not easy, but if you sound it phonetically, you’ll get it.

Both Elliott and Nancy liked the images and took my MOO card. Elliott gave me an e-mail address, but images that I sent came back. I hope that they contact me.

Thank you Elliott and Nancy, for allowing me to photograph you for the 100 Strangers Flickr group. Now that the government shutdown is over, perhaps educational benefits will resume.

Having completed my 100 Strangers Flickr Group page project and having had great fun doing so, I am doing it all over again.

A lovely warm summers evening in one of the many green spaces near the centre of Bristol I spotted Koji and 2 of his friends. Kofi is from Japan and was working in Bristol as a Japanese Kimono fitter. They were all celebrating Eva's (Stranger #16) birthday and it was a real pleasure to meet them.

Stranger in the backyard

I play sport, mainly squash and I usually play it in a sport centre....anyway, with tomorrow London Marathon there is been an increase of runners getting ready for it.

Dunkan is one of them. I approached him while he was stretching before a run....few minutes chat and lots clics clics ahahha

This is my 36th person in my 100 strangers project. I finally gathered up courage to ask if I can photograph her. I met this girl yesterday at a little small 'restaurant' in Flower's Bay.

There isn't a menu you just walk up and say "so what did you make today?"

"Okay we have some fish stew: plantain, snapper, pigtail cooked bananas and dumplings

Our friend Dugard had some of that. I opted for this amazing tart and bought some homemade bread.

This girl doesn't do the cooking she just works there. She goes and helps to sell the food. She said they make something new everyday. There are fresh bread and buns daily but they are usually gone by mid morning.

I asked her why they have bags hanging from the ceiling full of water and she said, "they keep the mosquitoes away" I said "Really??!! How does that work? Why would a bag of water hanging from the ceiling keep mosquitoes away??"

Then she smiled broadly and laughed and said, "I don't know... it is just something we do here!" I could see that she was as amused by the 'old island way'' as I was! We had a good laugh. If anyone knows why a bag of water hanging from the ceiling would keep mosquitoes away then let me know and I will go buy some more bags!! :-)

We had such a wonderful visit together. She is planning on going to University next year to Tegucigalpa in Honduras (that is the capital)

I know she will do well in life .. she is a beautiful person inside and out, with a winning smile, a willingness to engage and eyes that take in the whole world around her.

It was really good of Ruwan to agree to take part in this project as he was running late for a lecture. Luckily he agreed and I managed to grab a few shots. Ruwan is from London and studying at Oxford.

Yesterday, 28th of April, 2012, there has been a great demonstration in Rome (and a concurrent one in London) called "Salvaiciclisti" (Save the Cyclists). We were there with our bikes to make Rome a city worthy to be called a European capital. Every year thousands of people are killed because there aren't enough bicycle lanes in this and in many other cities of the world. During the demonstration, I saw a group of guys with wonderful t-shirts saying "28 April 2012 - Critical Ass - Save the Cyclists"! I stopped one of them asking the meaning of the t-shirt and where I could find it. She said me: "The meaning is easy! The ass is critical because it's very painful after being hours in the saddle! And the t-shirts are not sold, he made them ..." - and introduced me Yari.

Yari is a very nice guy, he found one last t-shirt in his backpack that perfectly fit me and he gave it to me for free! We agreed that I would have rewarded him with a participation in my One Hundred Strangers' project. Moreover he build fantastic fixed gear bikes on his own so we spent 10 minutes chatting about handlebars, frames, gears and wheels. Funny enough that, despite of his eccentric look, Yari is a financial consultant used to be dressed every day with jacket and tie (more or less like me ...)

So, thanks a lot Yari for participating in my project! It's been great to meet you and your friends!

I met Rita at a market in the south of France where she was selling paella and fideua. I started a conversation about the paella--which reminded me of the paella my grandmother used to make...with wistful nostalgia, I asked her to be my first portrait for this group...and promised to send her a copy of the photo by email. Since I had been refused by two people the day before, I was particularly happy that Rita accepted!

This is Cyril. What a lovely man. We went to Rochester to take some shots in the Cathedral. Whilst having some lunch, I switched to my Sigma 20mm lens and looked out for people to photo for my 100 Strangers project.

Cyril was at the next table enjoying an ice cream. I didn't want to disturb him but when he moved off into the shade further up the street and set up a stool and got out a drawing pad and pen I thought I would ask him. Cyril is 90 this year and has been drawing since he retired. He showed me some fantastic line drawings of some of the buildings round Rochester. We had quite a long chat and then I thanked him and left him in peace. He doesn't have a computer so will not see this photo - if there is anyone in the Rochester area who knows Cyril perhaps you can print this and show him.

This photo is by far my favorite portrait in the 100 Strangers Project so far. This is Ralph. He was a homeless man I encountered in downtown Indianapolis. I introduced myself and I asked if I could take some photos of him for this project and he granted my request. We chatted a bit and he asked me if there was any way that he could get a picture. He explained that he hadn't seen his mother since he was 6 and he had recently found her on Facebook and she wanted to see a picture of him. I agreed to mail him a photo and took down an address I could send it to.

I've found that when approaching people the best way to start off is to introduce yourself and offer a handshake. Most people are generally pretty friendly when you explain what you're doing. I've also realized that the worst thing that can happen, is that you get turned down. This project has allowed me to really get to know some interesting people and I can't wait to continue it.

Not too far from my previous stranger, this guy was smoking a cigarette.... he has an amazing deep blue gaze and looks a little bit like the french actor Vincent Cassel :)

I think I will try to do an alternative sequence of my strangers project, in color this time, because even if I prefer B&W (it is easier for a beginner like me) we lose a lot of the beauty of the model...

Harris is my 49th stranger, perfect since Alaska is the 49th state, and Harris has been in Alaska for 50 years! He was a crane operator all his life and now his son operates and owns cranes. Harris thought it was neat that I like to take pictures of cranes. I was on a bike ride and getting closer to home when I saw Harris in a park by the bike trail and he was quite willing to help my 100 strangers project by being #49!" Oh! When I asked if he wanted to see his pictures he said, "You mean I can see them right now??" He was blown away by today's digital camera.

Sophie was promoting an event in Cardiff and I stopped to ask her what was going on. She explained that it was a teenage pop designer show. I explained that I did street photography and liked taking stranger pictures. She agreed and I said I would send her the results.

We only communicate in gestures and different languages, I still don't know his name after seeing him nearly every month for a couple of years. I finally pulled out the camera today and pointed back and forth, and he agreed. The only 2 words I understood were Turkey and Islam. He also gestured a hug and kiss and I wasn't going there. I think he may be looking for a woman which could be why all the women in his building don't speak to him. Although I think most of them are Russian and maybe they just don't speak his language. He always sits by himself, or occasionally with some other old men who are smoking and listening to Russian music.

I met Vittoria in Piazza S.Cosimato, a place in Trastevere where there is a nice market in the morning and a small amusement park for kids.

Vittoria was having a walk with his little son, an almost two years old kid whose name is Camillo. While we chatted, Camillo was playing there around with a quiet dog.

Vittoria is a journalist and she worked especially in the politic and economic areas even if she recently resigned because she was not so happy with her work.

But her dream was the crime news. She studied as a lawyer and also made a master in criminology. I tried to encourage her a little bit, because she wasn't in a very good mood today. I had the same experience in the past, it's not easy lo leave a job without having a new one but if you're not happy with that, you have to.

Wendy was visiting Glastonbury from Cornwall. She is on a retreat staying at Shekin Ashram for the weekend. Natalie (stranger 77 www.flickr.com/photos/andrewtheprofessor/11250785103/in/s...) is staying in the same place. They had breakfast together before coming up the Tor. Both Natalie and Wendy gave me their email addresses so I have sent copies of the photos to them.

Wendy is a mum and a Wicca High Priestess. She has a 6 year old son and a grown up daughter. Her daughter loves photography and Wendy has recently bought her a nice new camera. Natalie and I wondered if Wendy’s daughter would be interested in the 100 strangers project. Maybe we will see some of your daughter’s photos on flickr sometime.

I was sitting on the stairs outside the Newmarket train station looking out into the square. I was enjoying the sun and snapping photos of some random things when this gent happened past. He remarked on my camera and this lead into a remarkable conversation with a stranger.

I found out that he was a visitor from "over the seas" which tuned out to be Waiheke island. We discussed photography and life and when he went on his way I asked him for a portrait and here it is.

I'd humbly like to thank this gentleman if he ever sees this. He has really helped me to nurture an interest in street photography and to start this project.

Trigger (yes, thats what he told me) was amongst the protesters in the Occupy London group. I saw him on the last day of their protest when there was more than usual activity in their camp site ( St. Paul's). They were using all sorts of ways to get themselves heard - microphones, dance and songs, posters, they even had a small gallery inside a tent mostly about bankers and the capitalism.

I didn't know at the time it was their last till i saw the news the following day when the police had removed their tents from the area.

[i know the focus point is a bit off , again, but i wasn't going let 'this' stranger go just for that. actually people with glasses are the hardest to get in focus ]

Traded in my Mamiya 645 for an RZ67. So far I'm loving it! However my images are getting a light leak...I think it might be because of a bad loading job...but it could be the back. Thankfully the camera shop that sold me the RZ67 said they would swap out the back for me if that's the problem :)

Anyways, a friend and I explored downtown Tucson and photographed some strangers. One thing I love about the RZ67 is that people want to be photographed by it haha. 2 of the 3 people I photographed asked me to photograph them :)

I came across Sirayha one day when i was wondering around Newmarket at lunch time.

I approached her and asked her "could I have a few minutes of your time?"

I think it was a bad line to start with as she looked at me warily and asked "what for?...", luckily I wasnt trying to sell her anything!

I explained that I wanted to take a photo of her and what I was doing with the stranger project. Luckily she was keen to let me snap a few pictures of her (as long as she could keep her sunnies on!), it turns out that shes into photography too. We even have the same camera body!

It turned out that she works in marketing and is really into the skate and street scene around Auckland. We talked a bit more and I realised that I had actually been at an event that her company sponsored last year and she had gotten up on stage to do a speech.

I gave her one of my flickr cards and went on my way, sorry for taking so long to get this up Sirayha (sp?), I hope you get to see it.

This was also an experiment in split toning and a composition that I wouldn't normally use so I hope it works for those of you viewing.

As I strolled through Downtown Asheville, I spotted Leslie and her stylish hat. I love women's hats. It gives me an excuse to introduce myself, and I really DO like them. She was seated outdoors having an animated conversation with Ken. When I approached her, she was shy, but willing. In fact, she stayed shy. She is a senior at the University of North Carolina, Asheville, majoring in Political Science. She hopes to go on to Law School at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Leslie kinda shrugged when I showed her the posted image. She wanted a more 'natural look,' Ken suggested that they continue talking, and I shoot as they spoke. I was not for that and went into one of my camera diatribes. “The problem with shooting when someone is speaking is that the camera sees, we perceive. While a friend is speaking, shoot a burst of 12-15 images over a few seconds. Almost every one will look ridiculous to downright freakish. You might think that you were watching her and she never looked like those unflattering images. But, in fact, she DID look like that for 1/100 second. But our brain receives a series if those images and somehow averages them out to the imagined image that we perceive. That's how political candidates show such horrible pictures of their opponents. Just catch 1/100 second of anyone giving a normal speech and he looks like an ogre.”

Ken said, yeah, we know this, we're photographers. Oh. Ken said he does general photography without elaborating – and he declined being photographed. Leslie likes photographing sports, events, and weddings. I told her that I could never shoot weddings.

“It's OK, if you choose the right bride and groom.”

“And the right in-laws.”

“Yeah.”

Sometimes strangers pass smiling under your kitchen windows, and make your day. Jessi was walking with a sure step near home with his boyfriend Massimo , two donkeys and a dog. I had to stop such a bunch, and I'm glad I did. They were just started – very first day – for their pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, 2.400 km in happy company.

They stayed for the night not far from us with their tent, and me and my family passed a great affter dinner with them – we brought pastries and shared stories.

Jessi is from Spain, and wondered why I had two cameras with me. "One is digital, one has a film in it". She looked at me as I was the strangest guy in the world.

Meet Nicola, whom I met on my Saturday stroll through Slottsparken (the park surrounding the royal castle in Oslo). He is my first stranger in a while; I do not like using a flash, and as it is winter, time off and daylight hardly ever coincides these days. Anyways, I brought my camera out even though it was snowing, since there was at least some light left outside. Passing the Royal Castle I spotted Nicola and Andrea (Stranger #25) while she was photographing him in the wintery park. I approached them, and helped out with a shot with both of them in it, and then I popped the project-proposal.

We chatted for a while, talking about their reasons for visiting Oslo. It turned out that Nicola is also known as Fecalove (do not play it too loud the first time...) and was visiting to give a gig here later that same evening.

Nicola posed for me in the bleak afternoon winter day, and I quite liked the result.

She is friends with Stranger # 1

When I was about to approach them (Stranger # 1) I was starting to chicken out. However, as soon as I reached their spot I did not hesitate anymore and just asked them. Both of them (Stranger # 1) were really really friendly, when I asked them for their photo I saw a little bit of hesitation on their faces, but they smiled back at me and said yes.

Im not that happy with the result of this photo because I didn't get to focus on her eyes.

I had set aside quite a bit of time during the afternoon specifically for the stranger project. The weather was uncooperative, with light showers to torrential downpours as soon as I arrived.

I spent most of my time ducking from awning to awning getting the 40D drenched each time. Unfortunately most people looked like drowned rats, and the few people that had umbrellas still looked quite annoyed.

I spotted Stranger #37 waiting to cross the street and figured I had nothing to lose seeing as the day was turning into a loss anyway, so after she had crossed I asked her if I could take her portrait. She was softly spoken and was quite flattered when I asked her for her portrait. It was still raining a bit, so I decided to include the umbrella as a backdrop instead of ducking under an awning. I think it worked quite well. Thanks Stranger #37 for being a standout on an otherwise dreary and unproductive day.

This is my third stranger portrait and the first male subject and again I didn't find out his name or any other details.

If he sees it, I hope she likes the photo and accepts my enormous thanks for agreeing to be photographed. I wasn't sure whether to crop the image to a square format but after a few trials decided against it.

Any comments, particularly constructive criticism, would be very welcome.

I spotted Elodie standing in the door way to Covent Garden tube station and headed over to give my pitch. She seemed friendly but asked me what for in heavily accented English so I explained more a little more slowly and she smiled and agreed right away. I was drawn to the bold colours that she was wearing and particularly her purple eye shadow which looked awesome.

I didn't stop to chat for long as I was fast loosing my family in the crowds as they never saw me divert for this one. Luckily Mrs Bomvu was wearing a bright jacket!

I was getting close to the limit for hand holding in this light but wanted to keep it at 100 ISO to preserve the lovely colours and thought there would be some nice shadows so I payed extra attention to my holding the camera and I think I just got away with it.

Elodie (I hope I've spelled this right) is from France and speaks better English than I speak French. Thanks so much for the picture!
