Marielle is from Perth, Western Australia and currently living in London. Along with her 5 friends I met Marielle sat in the beer garden outside 'The Drucken Duck' on the outskirts of Ambleside.

Ali took my photo today, so I felt obliged to take his. Ali is the second stranger in as many days that I've photographed, who is a professional photographer.
Ali works for Lifetouch, a photographic studio that specializes in school portraits. Previously, Ali also worked in photography at Zody's and Gemco (there's a couple of blasts from the past). After those stores closed, he has worked ever since at Lifetouch. All in all, he's been in the photography business for 38 years.
Lifetouch was at our school today taking photos of all of our students, creating instant student ID cards. These photos will eventually make it into our yearbook at the end of the year.
When I sat down for my photo today, Ali was on the other end of the camera. I watched him work throughout the day as I brought my other classes to get their photos taken. You could see that he truly enjoys making kids smile and getting the best shot possible of each one.
The last class of the day, my off period, I went back and watched what he did from his point of view, behind him. He had so much patience and energy.
Once the last photo had been taken, I approached him and asked him if I could take his photo which he willingly obliged. At first, he thought I wanted to take a photo of him with the standard gray mottled backdrop, but I told him I really wanted a shot of him with his gear that he used today, so he adjusted his gear down, posed and I got the shot.

It was a weekend and I went to park where artists would exhibit and sell their artwork.
I stopped at a place oil/acrylic paintings of facades. The artist was there and I asked him if he would like to be part of the project.
Meet Joey. He is the compleat artist and yet he humbly admits he is still a work-in-progress because his artistic style is still evolving. Not that he hasn't reached the zenith of his artistic skills. He has won his share of awards: an Urian award here, a Film Academy of the Phils. award there, an honorable mention in an international painting contest, and a lot more...
He immediately got into film direction straight out of college. He specialized in film direction of short films, TV adverts, and MTVs. He has been doing this for over a decade.
Lately, he has returned to his “first love”—painting. His acrylic and water color paintings reflect his architectural background. They show a penchant for details with an impressionistic touch. His pieces are heavily textured, giving you a tactile experience of his subjects.

This portrait was the first one I took at the 100 strangers meetup in London this Saturday. It was great to meet some fellow 100 strangerers and make new friends. We were all at different stages of this project and this provided a great learning experience for me which I am thankful to all of you for.
Anyway I saw Kade sitting around of one of the side streets of Brick Lane and was immediately drawn to his style. Unfortunately, Kade had recently been the target of racially hatred having been attacked in the Elephant and Castle Area. Whilst I have not been exposed to this level or racism, I have had experience of it and it's horrible. He has slowly began to get out and about again and it was good to see him in Brick Lane.

Cynthia, met at the park close to my home. It took me forever to work out the courage to start this thing. I hung around in the park trying to find good reason to do something else, and just before I convinced myself, I turned around and met Cynthia. She looked like a very nice person and I loved the flashy colors and original umbrella even though the weather was horrible, so I stopped her and told her about the project and she just quickly agreed and said yes to everything, which was really nice! (She's a "YES" girl!). When I asked her for the 1rst word to come to your mind, she almost answered before I had time to finish my sentence: "love".

Yesterday was the first day of my new project "100 stranger". The idea is to take a portrait of 100 different persons in 2011.
I was walking around the Hafen-City in Hamburg when I saw this pretty girl with her boyfriend. So I introduced myself and told them about my new project and asked both for permission to take a few photos.
Luckily, they both kindly accepted. They come from Spain and spent their holiday in Hamburg. Her Name is Silvia.
So here is my stranger number 1, the pretty girl with the blue winter hat.

In the evening of my first day of 100strangers project, arriving in Paris, I take the subway. In front of me, a guy in suit is playing on a gameboy. I found his style pretty nice, he looks like Neo in Matrix. During 10 minutes, I hesitate to ask him for the project: the wagon is very crowded, and personally, if someone ask me to take pictures of me in such place, I'm not sure to accept :S
Finally, I take out my camera, start to set up the parameters by taking photograph of the floor, then ask him. He smile, say he didn't think be very photogenic, but accept.

Don't get run over.
I first noticed Lynn, wearing her fashionable bicycle garb, inside the dry cleaning establishment where we were both picking up items. As she was getting her package stowed on her bicycle I introduced myself and my project. She immediately consented to a photograph.
I was using a long lens, which required me to stand at the mouth of an alley where a very loud delivery truck was approaching. I snapped the shot just as she was warning me not to get hit. Due to the noise, I didn't get a chance to speak at length with Lynn. I did find out she doesn't rely on her cool white bike exclusively for transportation. Her other sweet ride is a Miata.
Nice to meet you, Lynn -- if only briefly. Be safe out there!

"We arrived last night to Israel, we spent the night here on the beach, but this morning we've found a youth hostel so we checked in. In any case we won't be staying too long in Tel Aviv, we're going to see Jerusalem, Ein-Gedi and other interesting places.
"We are from Heidelberg, Germany. We are male nurses, have taken the same course over there.
"Yes, you are right, there should be more male nurses and less macho stuff!"

I met Monica on Brick Lane this Saturday when I went out stranger shooting despite the terrible weather. I spotted her walking with her hood on just after the rain had relented a little and approached her for a photo. I chose the background more on proximity rather than anything else but I did note that the brick tones matched her jacket and I feel that it has brought out her greenish eyes too. Also, I couldn't not have a 100 stranger project without the obligatory wall shot with the shallow dof :-)
Monica is Polish and owns a Studio nearby and design hats. As she wasn't fluent in English conversing with her was difficult but was comfortable posing for me.

Denis is one of these strangers that we approach with fingers crossed.
I met Denis in the "Quartier des Spectacles", near the "Place des Festivals". I approached him by explaining him the project and by saying to him that he represented well the difference which I look for. The one that I want to approach through this project.
In spite of his shyness, Denis agreed to be a part of my project, confiding me that this difference was quite recent.
By taking the first shot, I noticed that Denis was uncomfortable so I told him that I understood that it is intimidating and that I was going to be fast.
After our short session, Denis thanked me and told me that he was flattered that I asked him to be part of my journey. I answered him that I was very grateful for this encounter and that it belonged to me to thank him.
Thank you so much Denis for being part of my project. Your trust and your generosity sincerely touched me.

Denis est l’un de ces strangers que l’on approche avec les doigts croisés.
J’ai rencontré Denis dans le Quartier des Spectacles, près de la Place des Festivals. Je l’ai abordé en lui expliquant le projet et en lui disant qu’il représentait bien la différence que je recherche. Celle que j’ai envie d’aborder à travers ce projet.
Malgré sa timidité, Denis a accepté de faire partie de mon projet, me confiant que cette différence était assez récente.
En prenant la première photo, j’ai remarqué que Denis était inconfortable alors je lui ai dit que je comprenais que ça puisse être intimidant et que j’allais faire vite.
Après notre courte session, Denis m’a remercié et m’a dit qu’il avait été flatté que je lui demande de faire partie de mon projet. Je lui ai répondu que je lui en était très reconnaissante et que c’était à moi de le remercier.

Having taken Laetitia's photo (stranger N°97) I wondered around town for awhile taking some of my more normal photos but keeping an eye out for my last three strangers. Although it was sunny there weren't many people around and the people I met I either knew or had already taken them for my 100 stranger project. It was great meeting up with them again but not very helpful !
It was getting late and I needed to get home, I was almost there when I saw my stranger N°98 walking towards me with his friend. I asked if they had some time to spare and they said yes and I explained the project to them.
Meet Modeste-Luc, he's 38 and comes from Benin. He has been in France for a year and in Etampes for 8 months. He's a shop keeper but didn't tell me what he sells. He has a daughter, but she is living in Benin. When he's not working he enjoys football, music and meeting up with his friends for a coffee.
I got the feeling that he wasn't too sure about the whole experience but was happy enough to allow me to take his photo and tell me a bit about himself. Whereas his friend wasn't interested. I took three photos of him the main one and a second (in comments). I like them both, but there's a hint more of a smile in the main one. I gave him my card so that he could look for his photo.

Immediately after the session with Nadine (#002) Susanne took her place and we continued shooting.
..
Susanne works as a consultant for business development in a big enterprise and gives the impression of a tough business woman, who knows what she wants. But when she smiles relaxed her eyes are shining bright - I hope the chosen picture gives an impression of the effect, which triggered my fotographic mind.
I was pleased that the two were spontaneously willing to participate in my photo project and I hope they enjoyed the short shooting and the results.

Unmittelbar nach den Aufnahmen mit Nadine (#002) übernahm Susanne ihren Platz und wir setzten das Shooting fort. Susanne hatte den Vorteil, dass die Aufbau- und Einstellarbeiten abgeschlossen waren und wir die Sache ohne Unterbrechung etwas entspannter angehen konnten. Nichtdestotrotz war es immer noch schwierig, gegen die Sonne zu schauen und der Kamera schöne Augen zu machen.
Die Hoffnung auf eine kleine Wolke zur Verringerung der Lichtintensität erfüllte sich leider nicht, deshalb wäre ein Schattenspender (Sonnenschirm o.ä.) ganz willkommen gewesen, auch ein Reflektor zum Aufhellen der relativ harten Schatten wäre ein sinnvolles Zubehör.
Susanne arbeitet als Beraterin für Unternehmensentwicklung in einer großen Firma und vermittelt den Eindruck einer "toughen" Geschäftsfrau, die weiß was sie will. Aber wenn sie entspannt lächelt, beginnen ihre Augen zu strahlen - ich hoffe, das ausgewählte Bild gibt wenigstens einen kleinen Eindruck von der Wirkung, die dieser Blick auf mich als Fotografen ausübte.
Im Rahmen der Nachbearbeitung habe ich diese Fassung erstellt, bei der Ausschnitt, Weißabgleich und Kontrast leicht korrigiert sind und ein paar "Schönheitsreparaturen" zur Optimierung eingesetzt wurden.
Ich habe mich gefreut, dass die beiden spontan bereit waren, mich bei meinem Fotoprojekt zu unterstützen und hoffe, dass ihnen dieses kurze Shooting Spass gemacht hat und sie an den Bildern Freude haben.

Sandra and Ven were standing outside the entrance of the Tattoo convention and were having a discussion when I stopped them and asked them for a portrait of both of them. They did agree but I think Sandra seemed more happy to do it. Ven was carrying a big backpack and I believe had just arrived and so was probably a bit tired. I had asked him a few times for his name but I have still forgotten it so I am not 100 percent sure, but we will go with Ven. He is from Italy.
Having taken a picture of Sandra in front of the dark wall, I wanted to use the white wall opposite for Ven. However, Ven said that they needed to get going and didn't want to move. Funny thing was he kept saying it would be nicer in front of the white wall as I was shooting. I would then suggest we go there and he would then say no. In the end, I just turned him away from the dark wall and took this shot.

Me taking the easy road again, this time by asking someone behind the counter at a carnival game. Well at least she was happy to pose. Even though she was easy to approach and talk to, I was with some friends who thought I was insane. I'm pretty sure they kept looking over their shoulders thinking I was going to get arrested for taking pictures of strangers.

From the first glance, you see Marilyn Monroe in her. :) Met Maria while walking along the Times Square area. She gave me a flyer and I requested a photo of her. I explained her my project and she said "Go!". She is a promoter for shows in the area. Thanks Maria!

A young man and young woman were looking in Costa Coffee. I walked past them a couple times. I actually walked quite a lot further up the high street before turning round coming back and approaching them. I asked James if I could take his photo. When he asked why I explained a bit about the project and he agreed.
It was about quarter past one and I he was on his lunch break. James said “breakfast”. James is a guitarist. He likes folk and rock. I asked if he does gigs and he said that he was starting in January.
After taking a few shots of James, I asked Emma if she would be part of my project too and she agreed. Emma will be my stranger 69. Emma works with James – she does backing vocals.

Christopher is one of my favourite strangers so far (if I'm allowed to have favourites)
He stood out quite distinctly in the quaint market town of Morpeth. He was with his mum and (I think) his sister, who laughed when I told them about the strangers project.
'Aye, well there's no-one stranger than our Christopher,' they cackled.
'Tell me about your hair,' I asked.
'I've been through every colour,' he smiled,'red, blue, green...but not pink. Pink's a girl's colour.'
Christopher told me that his uncle was a punk, and he liked the look but hated the music.
'What's the best thing that's ever happened to you?' I asked.
'Getting a job as a chef,' he replied without hesitation. 'I love it.'
Christopher was such a canny young lad, and I'm so glad I stopped him. He works as a chef in a garden centre near to where I work, so you never know, I might just pop in one day and sample his mince and dumplings. :)

After a conference I had a full weekend in Rome. A weekend where I planned to start my 100 Strangers project. So exciting. Friday evening I was eating delicious raw chocolate ice cream at Grezzo, in via Urbano.
Chatted with the friendly guy of the shop about healthy food and delicious flavors. Het told me he was vegan for 6 years. For the planet.
Decided this was the moment my project would start. He was really a nice and smiley guy! But I asked him not to smile and just look empty. Took two shots. My neat little, second hand Samsung NX300 camera took care of the lighting. Cropped one. And there we are. Numero uno.

Meet this woman. Never got her name. She seemed a bit reluctant for a photo, but she went for it anyways. She definitely would not give me her name though.
I'm always a little nervous shooting women of any ages really. In India it's not really appropriate for guys to even talk to women. Since I'm white I can get away with anything though, even then I'm still a bit reluctant. Went for it though. I wanted to capture the local village feel with this shot. This woman had like 6 cartilage piercings. A lot of the women had several. Right after this shot I found a woman I wanted to shoot that had like 8 cart piercings in each ear. It was insane. I wanted to take her shot, but she said no. hahaha. Super awesome though.

Stranger number 3. Went to Mallorca at the weekend - it is lucky that I can speak the lingo - they did not mind at all having their photos taken - much more receptive than in the UK. This chap 'Jorge' was actually very flattered. At first I think he thought I was flirting with him (hence the smile!) then allowed me to take a few shots. He owns an olive grove in Pollenca and has been married to his wife for 42 years. Enjoy - I like his smile.
This is Keith.
I'd initially approached Stranger #05 (my next stranger), who said he'd be happy to have his photograph taken, but Keith, 'the man in charge', would have to give his approval. I wandered over to Keith, introduced myself, and told him about the100 Strangers project. Thankfully he approved and also agreed to be photographed, but wasn't too keen to stand up and pose.
Keith has had his plot at the Eden Drive allotments in Headington, Oxford for over 40 years and, I believe, was also the chairman for a number of years. We talked allotments and weather. He was a no nonsense type of bloke. I like that.

Charlie was with Chris (Stranger #112) and also agreed to a quick portrait without hesitation. So while Evan chatted away to Chris I took a few frames of Charlie whilst she tried her hardest not to smile. Charlie was wearing sunglasses when we met and I asked if she could remove them as I suspected she had eyes that would impress. I wasn’t wrong!
Charlie works for an Australian company called Wheels & Dollbaby, a fashion house catering for customers looking for one off fashion pieces. Many celebrities in film & music wear their designs and are often featured in many fashion industry magazines around the world.
I asked her what her aspirations were in life and she said that she really hadn’t any idea at the moment. Although she has BA in Gender Studies she thought that it wouldn’t be something she would pursue in the future.

Last Friday I went to the mall to see my friend who sells pearl-based jewelries. I was hoping she could introduce me to some muslim lady vendor who would be interested in taking part of the “strangers project”. It turns out that Friday is their worship day. But I ran into Giselle who was the new saleslady in the stall where my friend works. I talked to her about the project. She was hesitant but when I showed the photos I have taken, she recognized another saleslady she knew; with that she agreed.
I took a couple of shots. You can see her tentative attitude about the whole thing but I liked her “native” face, devoid of make-up. I wish I coaxed her to smile a bit. But it looks like she had a subtle smile. Giselle hails from Palawan, a province known for it's beaches and other tourist spots. She goes back regularly but prefers to work in the city.

i love taking a walk to take shots around Malioboro on Sunday, particularly, when i see a group of men and women taking pictures together.
when they saw me (holding a DSLR), they suddenly asked me to take the photograph of theirs. of course i didn't refuse their request, as i saw that this would be a good chance to get them as strangers :D
and voila, after i took some shots of them using their cameras, i asked if one or two of them would voluntarily be strangers. Bayu and Icha (stranger 37) voluntarily agreed to be my strangers :)
i asked them where they came from and they replied that they were from Jakarta. well, hope we could see each other again, my friends! :)

This is Abro.
Abro had a big, grown-up person's camera, so I decided he'd be a good stranger to approach. This was one of those meetings where I wasn't quite sure if it was my strange accent, my rambling introduction, or simply a reluctance to be photographed. Or a mixture of all three. It was a brief encounter. We exchanged a few words, Abro posed for his photograph and then we went our separate ways.
An interesting fact about Abro? As a child, Abro dreamed of working for NASA. Abro told me that NASA only employ U.S. citizens, so his dream will probably never come true.

I took the bus into town, to have lunch with my girlfriend after she had finished her schoolday. we sat in a small restaurant at gullmarsplan, in stockholm.
I took the opportunity to try out my new (used) lens, a Auto Chinon 135mm f2.8 (M42).
I photographed a people walking by in the cold outside. This man stood outside the window talking to his kids, and I think the kids spotted me

The first person I actually asked was a clerk at the Keweenaw Co-op (health food store in Hancock, MI). But she declined and apologized for being so "photo-phobic."
Only temporarily discouraged, I again pulled out my camera while in the check-out at WalMart, in Houghton. "Rich" was very willing to pose as my first subject. When I told him I'd been looking for someone interesting for my first portrait, he responded, "Well, I've been called a lot of things, but never 'interesting!'" Can you imagine?
As I explained the project to him, we chatted quickly so as not to hold up the line behind me. He's been working at WalMart for 11 years now, and has been living up here in the U.P. for 16-17 years. He says that he grew up "all over the place." His dad was in the military, and then Rich joined the army too. When he was ready to settle down, his choices were either Georgia or the U.P. He said that, since Georgia has poisonous snakes, the choice was easy. He can tolerate all the snow, but not poisonous snakes!
I thanked him and gave him one of the cards I made up for this project, and let him get back to his job.

I had seen Mikyung a little earlier watching her boyfriend running across Wells Cathedral Green toward her. They stopped at the edge of the green and appeared to be texting (they were actually doing facebook updates). Initially I asked Nigel if I could take his photo but he suggested that I take Mikyung’s photo. I was happy at this suggestion. I took photos of them both together then each of them in turn while we chatted.
Mikyung is the head at an academy in South Korea. At the academy the students receive an advanced education. Mikyung is also an author. Nigel suggested that I might be in the first chapter of Mikyung’s second book. He said that he had not been able to read her first book as it is in Korean. They asked if it be OK to take my photo. Of course I agreed.
Although our meeting was quite brief I warmed to Nigel and Mikyung very quickly. They seemed so comfortable together and were very pleasant company.
Thank you Nigel and Mikyung for letting me take your photos. It was lovely to meet you. Best wishes for your time in the UK and back in Korea.

My sister and I had left Union Square in San Francisco where I met and photographed my first two strangers. We headed to Chinatown to get egg custards at Golden Gate Bakery. On our way we stopped in the first (of three) Vital Leaf tea shops: www.vitaltealeaf.net/
Inside we asked if we could taste some tea and that is how we met Kenny. He poured us Lishan Oolang, Blue People Ooland, Pu-ehr, Iron Godess, roses, jasmine and many other teas. It was fun and Kenny was a cheerful guy that made a lot of jokes and talked about the different teas.
He joked about the leftover tea he poured down the sink that he was really saving to make Snapple. He also joked that Pu-ehr tea tastes like "soiled water", but I like it. Various other people came in and out of the tea shop while we were there and he poured tea for all of them. Kenny and his business partner have three shops right on Grant St. in Chinatown and this is the newest. They have two shops at Pike Place Market in Seattle. Kenny's favorite tea is the Iron Goddess King but he likes one flavored tea, a Lychee flavored tea which he makes into iced tea. Kenny was raised in a tropical town in Malaysia, he is great at smiling, has a good sense of humor and would someday like to open another tea shop in Honolulu.
It was quite a different experience asking Kenny for his photograph for this project since we had already been sitting in his shop for a while, as customers. But it was fun and different and I did want to try to get a photo of someone in their workplace. Again, I could have taken more time to take a better photo, but I also wanted to catch Kenny in a slightly more "candid" setting. I also wanted to have the tea canisters on the shelves behind him and the tea "pot" in his hand, so it told more of the story of his surroundings too.
I met these two girls near the Tower Hill in London a week ago, on my very last day of travels. It was a rainy day so I had to find a shelter for awhile so that's where I saw them, they were eating some British fish & chips. They saw me and asked me if I were Malaysian and I said yeah, because apparently they're Malaysians too, they're students in Cardiff, came to London to travel (being Malaysians haha). We talked for a few mins and later, I gave them my blog address. Unfortunately, I forgot to ask their names...
(They have pretty hair colours right?!) <3
Manon was fiddling with her phone when I ask her if I can snap a photo of her. She ask me why and I politely explained her the project. She agreed and said that at least she will get a photo with herself because she is traveling alone. She is from Belgium and visiting here in NY. I went out with a couple of friends on Thursday. Now that I'm back into the swing of my 100 strangers project I had my camera with me. Not that I'd taken any pictures, but I did have the camera just in case.
I'd seen Sam earlier in the evening. She and her mother had appeared fleetingly in the bar my friends and I were in. We didn't speak, but a girl like Sam is hard not to notice. Whilst checking the times of my train home, Sam and her mother Vicky appeared. I mentioned that I'd seen them and we got chatting - mainly about the fact that Sam and Vicky's last train home had been replaced by a bus service and that they'd have a much longer journey home than originally planned.
This was too perfect an opportunity to pass up on another stranger so of course I asked. Orginally I wanted to capture both Sam and Vicky toghter but alas Vicky was remarkably camera shy. Vicky was "gently persuaded" by Sam into posing for a few snaps but I knew her heart wasn't in it, so stranger number 12 is Sam alone.
Sam is familiar with the Flickr website so I've told her to pop long to the 100 stranger group if she wants to see this picture. If you do pop by Sam I hope you like the picture as much as you like Maltesers, and thank you for such a lovely pose.
Carolyn had come to visit her family, who live in Somerset, for Christmas. Today she was with her friend, Sia (stranger 90 www.flickr.com/photos/andrewtheprofessor/11606200004/in/s... ). Sia was taking photos of her. Carolyn was lying across the direction stone (the same one as Douglas, stranger 73, had been sitting on www.flickr.com/photos/andrewtheprofessor/11140182856/in/s... ) and Sia was standing on the stone pointing the camera down at her. I think that Carolyn's hair was spread across the stone. With hindsight maybe I should have taken a photo of this but over the last 7 months I have got into the habit of taking photos only after asking permission. Maybe I would take candid photos but not of someone that I might be thinking of including in the project.
Carolyn is living in Cambodia where she has a 2 year teaching contract at a primary school. She has been travelling and teaching since 1997. I asked Carolyn about her initial impressions and current thoughts of Cambodia. She told me that this was her second time there. She had originally had a holiday at Angkor Wat and subsequently decided to come back to live in this lush country.
Carolyn is a photographer, an artist and enjoys yoga. She was very interested in the 100 strangers project. In her spare time you might find her on the veranda of her bungalow that sits on stilts – she could be doing yoga or some painting.
When I mentioned that it was Sia's hat that had been my initial interest, Carolyn said “isn't my hat nice” and we all laughed. There were a couple clues to Carolyn being a photographer. She offered to take off her glasses and she checked that there was no hair blown across her face. I thanked her for this as too many of my photos have stray hairs across the face (although in Carolyn's case I don't think that there were any) – removing her glasses did make it easier to focus on her eyes.
Carolyn and Sia thanked me for including them in my project and gave me their email addresses so that I could send them copies of the photos.
Thank you Carolyn for being my stranger number 91. I hope that you like the photos and enjoy the rest of your holiday. It was great to meet you.

This couple was on a first date at a park in Manitou Springs, and while they were interesting and fun to talk to, they didn't want to have their names and faces "all over the internet." I think they really just wanted me to leave them alone. But! They did allow me to take this shot and said it was "okay" to use for the project.
My next stranger was shot hurriedly. I didn't have my DSLR in toe because I was looking after my father who suffered a heart attack. He is better now and is about to be discharged after 4 days in the hospital. So I wasn't really in the mood to “shoot” any strangers; besides the nurses were really busy and were changing everyday.
But on our last night, nurse Christy came in, so I grabbed the opportunity. She was hesitant and shy but I explained the project and showed other photos I took. She finally agreed. Thanks for taking care of my father nurse Christy. Good luck with your practice and I hope you get regularized. Christy is on probation for 6-months after passing the 3-month training period. Guess what, it's her birthday today. Happy birthday Christy!
