I visited Nottingham’s Highfields Park to see if I could find any strangers to photograph. Whilst taking a breather out of the sun two young ladies came walking towards me. I stepped forward and introduced the project to them. Ellena was quick to say yes to being photographed (see my previous stranger) and Emma was a little more hesitant. Seeing her friend enjoying being photographed convinced Emma to being a stranger for me too.
I asked Emma to stand in the shade cast by a tree which also positioned her so the background was mainly green. I wanted to have a green backdrop as I thought it contrasted well with the mauve colour of Emma’s top.
Emma told me her guilty pleasure is washing, drying and straightening her hair every day, sometimes more than once.
Thank-you Emma for saying yes to being photographed for my stranger project. I hope you like your portrait.

I’ve taken Karen photo before as she’s always changing her hair colour and often wears brightly coloured outfits. She’s always great fun to chat too and today was no different. She was telling me how she loves to travel, especially over to Europe. Now that some travel restrictions were being lifted she was looking forward to planning some more adventures in the near future.
As I was heading out to grab some lunch today, I decided to bring my camera along, determined to continue and finish this project started years ago.....
After being done with my meal, I started walking up and down the streets around the Subway I just ate at for about 30 mins or so. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anybody ''interesting enough'' to shoot. I was then ready to head back to work when I noticed, from far away, this young lady sitting on a bench by herself.
I did not want to bother her at first as she seemed to be talking to someone over the phone. I began looking at her out of the corner of my eyes (hopefully in a non creepy way) hoping she'd be done with her call soon. I approached her as soon as she became available which luckily, happened not long after. She was really opened about this and the only question she asked me was what I was going to do with the photo.
Meet Sakina, a 20 year old part time student who looks effortlessly beautiful.
She is part time in school and works part time as an assistant in a home help services company. Turns out, we do not work very far away from one another. I'll probably run into her sometime again in the future.

Hi, I met Catherina at Westfields in Sydney CBD at a prominent shopping mall - Myers.
She went there to work. And before her work would start I approached her for the project and she happily came along. We discussed about her family overseas, her favorite actors and her family and parents.

Stranger #57 – Insaf
Insaf was sitting with a friend of hers. I asked her if she’d like to take part in my challenge and she agreed.
Insaf is an undergraduate student in economy from Morocco. She studies micro economy, macro economy, statistics. “Covid has slowed my life down It has slowed my studies down. I model sometimes and I’d like to keep modelling that or have 10,000 children, no I hope not. I like photography, I like showing people beauty, I like travelling seeing different people.”
Insaf was at ease and a real professional model, varying her poses and waiting until I’d taken a picture before moving again. It was a real pleasure to meet her get to shoot with her.

Insaf est étudiante en licence d’économie, elle vient du Maroc. Elle étudie la micro économie, la macro économie, les statistiques. “Le covid m’a ralentit dans ma vie, ça a ralentit mes études. Je fais du mannequinat, j’aimerais continuer à faire du mannequinat, ça ou avoir 10000 enfants, non j’espère pas. J’aime la photographie. J’aime montrer la beauté, voyager, voir des gens différents.
Insaf était très à l’aise, une modèle très professionelle, elle a su varier les poses et attendre que j’ai pris une photo avant de bouger. C’était un vrai plaisir de faire se connaissance et de la prendre en photo.

When I asked Kirsty if she would pose for a portrait she asked all about the project and gave it a lot of thought. It often surprises me how few people do this. She then told me that she works as a researcher in the education sector so that explains the analytical approach.
I took a couple of pictures and I like this one the best, though I'll post one or two more when I get a chance. I really liked her eye catching style!

This past week, one of the young men that work with Mrs. Paco invited her to attend a local music festival in which his band was being featured. So Saturday evening, the two of us headed downtown to The House of Blues to take in some tunes.
Shortly after we arrived at the venue, Mrs. Paco’s friend spotted us in the crowd and came over to talk. His name was Jeff, and he is the vocalist in the band. Of course I was toting my gear sling bag, and I eventually asked him if his band might be interested in getting a cover photo. He thought it sounded like a good idea, so he headed off to find the rest of his group to see if they would be game. Sure enough, about ten minutes later Jeff, his bandmates, and the entourage returned ready for a photo shoot. They only had about twenty minutes before they needed to start preparing for their set, so time was of the essence. Fortunately, one of my favorite alleys in the city (Strangers 64, 95, &96) was adjacent to The House of Blues, so we simply had to exit and walk around the building. Even so, walking there, preparing my gear, getting them posed, and capturing the shot had to be accomplished hurriedly to make the time line. I wish I had a little more time to consider the shot simply because my imagination could run wild with a rock & roll group shot, but I am satisfied with this image we produced. BTW, Jeff is located in the forefront left.
After the brief shoot, the boys started heading back to the venue, but I couldn’t let this opportunity pass without getting a stranger portrait. I had just met the band, so I considered using the group picture as a stranger photo submission, but the premise of this image was a band cover photo and not the 100SP shot. Therefore, I stopped one of the members because I liked his facial hair, his hat, and the ‘Sex, Drugs, & Rock-Roll’ T-shirt. I gave a quick description of my project and then made my portrait request. His name was Cody and he was more than happy to pose. Cody is the bass player in the band. I quickly posed him and captured this image before he had to catch up with his mates.
The band’s name is ‘The Royal Skam’, and they rocked. Their music was edgy, and I was thoroughly impressed with their energy, their stage presence, and their talent. Great job guys.

I met this wonderful lady near Townhall at Sydney CBD while she was waiting for lightrail. We talked for about three hours while exploring many events of her life. It was a very refreshing conversation to get to know a stranger.

Stranger #76 – Kornel – I spotted him in the centre of Wrocław, Poland where his get-up immediately caught my attention. I approached him, asked for a photo and he instantly agreed. I started explaining the project anyway but Kornel interrupted me and told me he is a photographer himself :) We moved a few meters towards the shadows and I took a few pictures as usual. I’m happy with the result and I think Kornel’s very serious expression really makes this portrait great :)

I should have asked Benjamin. He might have known.
Benjamin was acting as a marshall at the Bicester Santa Fun Run 2013. I'm not quite sure what his actual duties included, but he seemed like he was doing a good job of keeping the Santas in order.
In his younger days, Benjamin always dreamt of being an inventor. Now he's hoping to study English at university. Good luck Benjamin.

I visited Nottingham’s Highfields Park with the sole intention of approaching people to photograph for my stranger’s project. As I took a walk around the lake, a young lady came towards me. As our paths crossed, I stepped forward an introduced the project to her. Zuzanna didn’t need to be persuaded to say yes to being photographed.
The only useable backdrop was a dark tree that didn’t have any light coming through its leaves. Zuzanna’s turquoise top contrasted nicely with the darker greens of the foliage. Zuanna’s dark hair has blended into the background a little, but there is separation between her hair and the leaves.
Zuzanna is a student and she is from Poland.
I asked Zuzanna what her guilty pleasure was, and she told me it was watching Friends over and over again.

“I am a beacon!”
I’d just had back to back refusals, so I was really pleased when Sarah said “Yes”. She was willing to cross the road to a nearby bench for the photos.
I noticed she had a “Claire’s Accessories” lanyard and asked if she worked there. She did. I then asked if she knew Mimi [who was working at the same store when I met her a year ago] and Sarah smiled confirming that she did. It is not the first time that I have had that reaction about Mimi – she seems to have a positive effect on others.
I wondered if Sarah had finished her shift but she was on her lunch break. It seemed late to me as it was getting dark. It was 3pm, a cloudy day and the sun would be set in about an hour.
When Sarah and I finished making portraits, I said that I would probably see her again, now that I had met her once. She said “Yes. I am a beacon!”

Just in case you are interested in reasons for refusals… The first person I asked today said that she wasn’t at her best, she had not had much sleep the night before. I said that maybe I would have the opportunity at another time. The young man that I asked, looked to be in a hurry. I had been in two minds about asking him as the woman he had been with had gone in a direction that he had not expected, so he was probably wanting to catch up with her.

Kay and I headed in to Houston today to do a bit of wandering and on the way there decided to stop by a location where graffiti artist are welcome to create works of art, this is definitely not gang related graffiti. It has been quite a while since we have been by there and were so delighted to find this wonderful artist about to begin working on her project today. Her name is Natalia Victoria and this is the first mural project she has done. The soldier on the right is her brother who just finished serving in the Marines and the little girl on the left is her daughter. Natalia is not only talented but a really neat young lady and if was definitely our pleasure to meet her and see the project she is working on.

The blue in Skevi’s hair caught my eye as I walked past a Nottingham pub. Skevi was sitting outside with her cousin, Angie (see my previous stranger). They were out celebrating Skevi’s birthday, which was the day after I met them.
I asked if it was ok for me to sit at their table to take my photographs of them as I wanted to be on eye-level with them as I feel this produces a much better picture than if I was looking down on them.
When I first approached them, Skevi declined saying she wasn’t in the right frame of mind to have her photograph taken. I told her she would change her mind after she watched me taking pictures of her cousin.
Skevi is a store manager and visual merchandiser for Damaged Society damagedsociety.co.uk/ When not working, Skevi enjoys getting tattooed and going to gigs. Skevi’s hobbies include DIY and upcycling old fashion and furniture. You can follow Skevi here: www.instagram.com/horror.creeep/
What inspires Skevi? “Anything dark, medieval and gothic,” she said, then added, “if it has to be a person it would be the Witch-king from The Lord of the Rings.”
What can’t Skevi live without? “My new rocks,” she replied with a smile.

I wasn’t surprised when Sophie told me that she and her partner, Jon, enjoy Cosplay. I had been walking around the shopping centre in Birmingham for some time looking for someone interesting to photograph. I had just been thinking that it would be good to find someone with different make-up, when I spotted Sophie.
Sophie has just completed a degree in Art and enjoys illustration. He favourite medium is fine pens. She and Jon like to attend the Comic Con conventions, in costume. They showed me a photo and the outfits were very impressive.
I had already spotted somewhere to take the photos. There was some construction work going on and the scaffolding outside Boots provided some shade from the intermittent early afternoon sun. After making portraits with Sophie, I asked Jon if he would be happy to take part too. I took some shots of him, then of the couple together.

Today is the last day for the shoemaker in the mall. He quits; making shoes is not enough money to make. Today his children come along who know nothing but that their father is a shoemaker. And now something else, saying goodbye to old customers, cleaning up, a week's holiday and then other work. What? He doesn't know that yet, there are some pots on the fire. A craftsman leaves. I was allowed to take a picture in front of the entrance to his workshop. Thanks Andre.

About twenty feet ahead of me I could see Phoebe unlocking her front door. I called out as I could see that she would be inside by the time I reached her. “excuse me… would it be OK to take your photo?”
Phoebe had just been going to pick up a couple bits while her mum was waiting in the van with the door open. They were in a hurry to get breakfast. Thankfully Phoebe is a photographer, perhaps a kindred spirit and she agreed to my request. As I lifted the camera, Phoebe kindly said “lens cap”, so I smiled and removed it before continuing.
I had taken two or three shots before I suggested that she might like to put her bag on the floor so that the shoulder strap would not be in the picture. It was then that Phoebe reminded me that her mum was waiting for her. She went inside and I chatted with her mum until Phoebe returned.
As we exchanged our goodbyes and words of thanks, I wished them a good lunch. Phoebe’s mum reminded me that they were on their way to breakfast. She had been out jogging and was feeling hungry. I apologised for holding them up and wished them well for the rest of their day.

Mathew Street, Liverpool, 2022.
I arrived on Mathew Street on the Saturday of the Liverpool Mod Weekender. I could hear the rumble of live bands playing at The Cavern Club, and the smell of two-stroke exhaust fumes floated in the air. There were a few cool-looking scooters opposite the entrance to The Cavern, and one guy stood out as a great candidate for a portrait.
The scooters were the subject of my first few pictures, and when this chap got onto one of them I had a brief chat with him about the colours and the Tic-Tac theme. I asked if I could take a picture of him sitting on it and he agreed straight away. His name is Alan.
I took three pictures. One was a closer shot of him smiling with less of the scooter in the frame. Another was closer still, but his eyes were looking down and it felt too posed. The shot you see here was the first one I took of the three. Even though there is some movement in his hand and a lack of direct eye contact with the camera, this one is my favourite because he looks more natural and at ease, and there is something of an action shot vibe to it.
I used my old Canon G9 compact for this portrait. It was the first time I have ever used anything other than a Canon 6d to photograph a stranger. I wanted to test myself a bit and see what I could produce with something more technically constrained, and also gauge how people reacted to a smaller, less intimidating camera.

I met Ericka at the Manhattan Beach pier. She was sitting on a bench watching the waves crash on the sand. Ericka seemed to be in deep thought when I first approched her (see the photo in the comments), and she also had a dazzling smile. Erika is a student at Cerritos College and she lives in Carson California. Thanks Ericka for participating in my 100 stranger project.

This picture is #45 in the 100 Strangers Project - Round 3
Meet Martinica.
Martinica instantly set the stranger portrait bells ringing even from a distance soon when I saw her soon after I photographed Gaia. She was strolling, possibly window shopping, looking through the stores along the streets in Rome, but her personality along with her elegant sense of dressing made her a wonderful subject. When I approached her, she heard me patiently and immediately agreed to be a part of the pictures. She was very fluent in English which made things much easier. We walked to a quieter less busy street trying to find some good light and undistracting background, and I used the opportunity to know a little more about this rather dynamic young lady.
Martinica is a dancer - she performs as well as teaches the Flamenco-oriental dance form, a beautiful fusion dance format that she has learned from her mom. I do encourage you to check out her performances on her profile. She had very unique vibrant personality which I learned she inherited from her Colombian mother and Italian dad -suffice to say its a great mix. The years of dancing showed in the way she carried herself with poise and confidence. Posing just came so naturally to her - just had to make a suggestion and she took over bringing her own unique flair to each picture. Her favorite quality of herself was her creativity which was not at all surprising. She loves travelling and her fondest memories of herself are the times of childhood with her friends.

Having seen Peter just knock it out the park the day before in terms of approaching and photographing strangers, I was disappointed with my total of just 1. I had approached 3 people but had been rejected by 2.
I am guessing that subconsciously I wanted to get one more portrait since the next day when I went to my local coffee shop, I took my camera with me. After spending the morning there I headed back but went on a long route home. During this stroll I came across CJ and her dog.
I had seen CJ many times before as she lives on my road but had never spoken to her too. I took a guess that she was on her way home and walked ahead of her to pick my spot. As she
was about to walk past, I had my camera out partly to test the background but I was hoping to peak her interest too.
As she walked by, she said "I thought there would be a model by the door", I said "I am about to and its you!!"
CJ, (first name Claudia, second name a mystery) is 48 years old and originally from Columbia, Bogota to be exact. Having been there myself we were able to have a lovely conversation about her home country.
As you can see, she is a very striking lady and she said she was thinking about doing some modelling. As you can see, I think she will have no trouble on that front.
Originally I went in for the close headshot, but once I saw her dog standing there (could be a model itself), I asked her to go back to her spot and took a few more portraits.

I saw them across the street near the Art Gallery of Ontario but a red light was working against me. Of course the red hair jumped out at me and set my project nerve tingling. When the light changed, I saw they were walking slowly and figured that catching up would not require a sprint so I walked up the side street and overtook them and just as I was going to make my oh so casual approach, I turned to see they were crossing the street. Well, in for a penny, in for a dollar as the saying goes. I once again caught up with them and made my pitch. “Sure. That sounds fun.” Meet Hira and Anneqa.
I quickly determined that the closest clean background not in direct sunlight was the wall of the Michener Institute building across the street and they were both fine with backtracking a bit. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Michener_Institute) They set down their purses on the step of the building and I put down my bicycle helmet next to the purses to explain the idea. They were both very cooperative and after taking a double portrait with sunglasses on, I asked to take one with them off. They obliged but Hira said she prefers photos with sunglasses on “But it’s your project and you’re the photographer, so it’s your decision.” How’s that for an accommodating stranger? All I had to do was ask them to stand in the same plane and tuck their heads a bit closer together.
Hira was the more outgoing and talkative of the two and said she lives nearby. She is 24, was born in Pakistan, and graduated from the University of Toronto. She hopes to earn a graduate degree in Clinical Psychology but is currently working for the nearby Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. Her thoughtful words of advice were “It’s important to understand people for who they are becoming rather than for who they are.” Nice. She told me that she’s an outgoing type who “likes people and enjoys doing crazy things.” She seemed very at ease and interested in me and my project. It was like chatting with someone I already knew.
Aneeqa is Hira’s friend and had just come into Toronto for a visit from Hamilton where she lives (halfway between Toronto and Niagara Falls). She is also from Pakistan. Aneeqa seemed a bit less outgoing than Aneeqa but was very friendly as well and explained that she is 21 and is studying to apply to Law School with a goal of becoming a Family Lawyer. As a retired Social Worker I could easily connect with Hira’s psychology interest and with Aneeqa’s desire to be a family lawyer. I have had contact with both professions during my career and both are fields where good people are needed. Aneeqa said I had met them at the start of their day together and that doing my project was a really fun way to start the visit. Next stop was the gym where the two of them were going to do a workout. “We’re lucky you asked us before the gym. We might not have been so eager after a sweaty workout!”
There was no question in my mind that I would photograph Hira and Aneeqa together rather than individually. Not only were they linked by the color red but I could tell by their manner that they are very good friends and I thought it would be a good opportunity to practice my double-portraiture skills.
When I asked Hira what her reaction was when I approached them and asked them to be in my project, she said, smiling “I’m really comfortable with people and love doing new and interesting things. It didn’t surprise me at all. And this isn’t the first time someone has wanted to photograph me. I was fine with it.”
Thank you Hira and Aneeqa for taking the time to meet and participate in The Human Family. You were a delight to meet and I wish you success in your chosen fields. You are #817 in Round 9 of my project.
Stranger #83 – Madi – she was strolling through the centre of Wroclaw, Poland when I spotted her. I asked for a photo and got completely baffled with the answer I got. She totally ignored what I said and - just like that - asked if I had a pen :) Luckily, I had one and without much thought handed it over to her. Madi wrote something hastily on the back of a receipt and then told me I could take the pictures. We moved a few meters towards some better light and I took a few shots. It was a really nice encounter :)

I first saw Gerry queueing at a coffee stand, on Princes Street, in Edinburgh. Once he had been served I approached him and asked if I might take his photo. He told me that he was on his way to a service of remembrance. We walked together until we reached his destination. Once there he stood for me while I took this portrait. Gerry looked rather serious but this seemed fitting for the occasion.
It was half term and there were plenty of tourists in the city but it was great to meet and photograph a local.

I saw him sitting with his smartphone and approached to say hello and ask for a portrait.
He said go ahead and after a couple of shots he joyfully opened his arms.
Aviv was on a short break, sitting outside the restaurant he is working as a cook. He was checking his messages and seemed to be needing this break from work.
I stayed just enough to find out that Aviv was born in Israel to Ethiopian parents who came in the 80s to Israel through Operation Moses.

I met CENTAINE recently at Hyde Park Sydney while she was passing by. It was raining so we took picture under the tree and as we took pictures we talked about her upbringing, memories of the past, her hobbies likes dislikes and many other things.

Stranger #32 – Katucia
The streets were busy on that Saturday, I saw Katucia in the crowd, I walked to her and asked her if she’d let me take her picture, completely oblivious to the fact that she was with friends. I got tunnel vision when I spotted her and hadn’t noticed she was part of a group. I asked her if she preferred yellow or red as a colour for a background and she said yellow, but red was closer and she didn’t have much time so she changed her mind. Katucia didn’t have much time, she’d sent her friend away, telling them she’d catch up with them.
Katucia works in human resources at the Caen jail. She helps the civil servants who work there with the specificities that can occur in jail. “I help them when they’re in trouble. I do what a social worker does at times. The most gratifying is helping people, being in touch with people.”

Les rues étaient bondées le samedi où j’ai rencontré Katucia, je l’ai aperçu dans la foule. Je l’ai abordé et lui ai a demandé si elle m’autoriserait à la prendre en photo, sans avoir remarqué qu’elle était avec ses amies. Ma vision avait rétrécit lorsque je l’avais aperçu et je n’avais pas vu qu’elle faisait parti d’un groupe. J’ai demandé à Katucia si elle préférait un fond rouge ou jaune, elle m’a dit jaune mais le fond rouge était plus près et elle n’avait pas beaucoup de temps elle a donc choisi le rouge. Katucia n’avait pas beaucoup de temps. Elle avait dit à ses amies de partir sans elle, qu’elle les rattraperait.
Katucia travaille dans les ressources humaines à la maison d’arrêt de Caen. Elle aide les agents qui y travaillent avec les spécificités qu’il peut y avoir dans une maison d’arrêt. « J’aide les agents quand ils sont en difficultés, je fais un peu assistante sociale. Le plus gratifiant c’est d’aider les gens, le contact avec les gens. »

I met Barbara and her friend Anna in the main square in Krakow. They made ideal additions to my stranger project. They confirmed that they were Polish, understood English and were happy for me to photograph them for my project.
Barbara seemed particularly excited. So I started with her.
We walked together a little until we found somewhere suitable to sit. Both young women smiled while I we chatted and made portraits. Barbara told me that she works locally as a waitress and enjoys painting. She likes to make illustrations of people.
Thank you Barbara for being such a willing subject today. It was good to meet you and Anna.

so i walked over
and introduced myself
this guy was intimidating
but i needed to take his portrait
he goes by the name of busman
he said i could only take his portrait if i promised to email him a copy
busman gave up his home 11 years ago for life in his bus

Stranger #72 – Elli – I spotted her while she was strolling through the centre of Wrocław, Poland. I asked for a photo, briefly explained the project and she quickly agreed. We moved a bit and I took a lot of pictures as she was posing very patiently and quite happily I’d say. Then we chatted a bit. It turned out Elli comes from Greece. She seems to be a very friendly and cheerful person and I consider this as a really nice encounter :)

Stranger #49 – Lila
“I had a shit day. You know what it’s like when you’re in therapy? You find a therapist, you’re not sure that therapist is right for you so you don’t want to go any more but trouble keeps piling up. I like drawing and photography. Sometimes I’ll just find a spot to stay at for a while with a beer and I’ll do a landscape. I didn’t study what I wanted to. I’d like to be useful, to help people.” “What’s been toughest for you recently?” “Loneliness. When you’re alone, your brain just runs in a loop, it won’t let up. I just bought some CBD, I thought I’d try it, see if it helps.”

P.S. It has been brought to my attention that it was probably CBD. My memory fails me as to which initials I heard, my ignorance probably led me astray. I ammended the text to reflect that.

“J’ai eu une journée de merde. Tu sais ce que c’est quand t’es en thérapie? T’as un psy, t’y vas, il te convient pas forcément, t’y retourne pas, les soucis s’accumulent. J’aime le dessin, la photo. Je me pose avec une bière, je fais un paysage. J’ai pas étudié ce que je voulais. Je veux être utile, aider les gens, leur rendre des services.” “Qu’est ce qui est le plus compliqué pour toi en ce moment?” “La solitude. Quand t’es seul, ton cerveau tourne en boucle, ça s’arrête pas. Je viens juste d’acheter du CBD, je me suis dit que j’allais essayer voir si ça m’aide.”
