In the cherry blossom's shade there's no such thing as a stranger
Im on Easter break! Can't only three more weeks of school left. Hoping everyone is enjoying this wonderful spring weather! This was from my last week visit to Botanic Garden for the annual Cherry Blossom season. Thankfully I just got there on time, or i would have missed it again like last year.

It is that time of year again where Evansrobinson and I head down to Melbourne City for the weekend to meet up with Neil Winch where we hit the streets looking for interesting people to shoot.
I don’t know what it is about this city but it never fails to deliver and as we made our way up Bourke Street Mall it wasn’t long before I spotted a very colourful character. Over I went and introduced myself and went through the usual blurb.
Meet Gary Bigeni. Gary is a well-known and respected Australian Fashion Designer. You can check his designs here.
Originally from Sydney he was in Melbourne working with a few of the local fashion stores.
I moved Gary to a small arcade off the main street looking for some diffused light and fired off a few quick shots. I've included a full length shot of him as I wanted you to see his amazing co-ordination of bright colours that caught my eye. There was nothing demure about his style, from his lime green and pink hair right through to his yellow shoes. A rather extraordinary individual!

A rain drop….another….and another….It was starting to rain.
I’ve been wanting to get a night time stranger portrait for ages. Now that I was finally out with my camera after dark, it was starting to rain.
I quickly scurried to a dry area underneath an eave alongside a nearby building. A few seconds later another couple (brother & sister) joined me in the small impromptu shelter. I was immediately struck by the strong sculpted facial features of the male half of the pair. It almost seemed as though the stranger gods had arranged this encounter as this summer cloud burst had brought us together…and in extremely close proximity. This was more than a photo opportunity…it was a gift.
David and I made a connection, and then, as if on cue, the shower ended as suddenly as it had started. We stepped out into the moist night air to make this portrait.

Sometimes it's like you just to have to choose someone in particular for a shot and this is one of such cases: Angela walked over me and I thought I lost a great chance when she was just a few meters away. A couple of minutes later she walked back in my direction and I did not miss this second opportunity. Angela looked great behind her big sunglasses but I'm glad I asked her to pose without them. I was a bit embarassed after a couple of weeks without being able to stop anyone, but sometimes it just happens.

Dennis is an ol'time cowboy. He drives the van for the Salvation Army Mobile Outreach. He was about to deliver meals as is habit for Saturday and Wednesday evenings in this area. He showed me some photos aof his Dad and mentioned he was a fan of horse racing. Thanks for taking a moment from the good work, to step into a bit of open shade and share a bit of your life.

Ioana was in conversation with a young man at the bus stop. When I asked if I might take her photo, she said that she didn’t have long. She was on her way home. I said that I could do it right away and she agreed. It was Ioana’s fantastic hat that had first drawn my attention and I mentioned this as I introduced myself.
Ioana was a good sport and moved according to my direction in the few moments that we had for pictures. It wasn’t long before her bus came but Ioana kindly wrote her email address for me while her colleague held the bus. He had also looked after her cigarette while we made a few portraits.
Thank you very much Ioana for being part of my project. It was good to meet you briefly today.

Tex caught my eye for obvious reasons - a flash of reggae colour breaking up an overcast, gloomy day in Newcastle.
Turns out that Tex is no other than 'Tex Johnson' - a musician who has been around on the reggae scene for a fair few years and who has thousands of songs to his name. He also has singles and albums on vinyl with 'Pillow Talk' his most well known song.
Tex - I looked you up and I'm impressed! I'm also glad you're still producing music and are happy and settled in Newcastle.

I met this lovely young lady at a craft exhibition in Maspalomas. She had a stall there selling her beautiful ceramics. Her English was very limited and my Spanish even more so. However, I asked her if I could take her photo, she asked why and I explained about the stranger project. She wasn't happy to oblige and I said that I quite understood as I hate having my photo taken. She seemed interested in the project and said that she also liked to take photos of strangers but didn't like to have her photo taken. I showed her some of my other stranger portraits and she asked if I had to use her name, I told her that it would be nice but not if she didn't want me to. She agreed to participate in the project if I would use her company name rather than her name (which she didn't divulge). Her company is Rhadhazul Cerramica, here is a link to her Facebook site, showing some of her work, she is very talented.

Another pic in comments which I think I prefer but the focus wasn't so sharp. I was so pleased that she changed her mind and decided to allow me to take her photo, especially after being so reluctant.

This picture is #2 in my 100 strangers project.
After the first step in this project and a day off, I felt the need to be back on the streets and find the next interesting character to fit in. Then I met Loredana and after the presentation I took some shots. She liked the result, and she said "It must be the camera!". But after I detailed about the project she said she is not interested and she would not like the photos to be posted so I couldn't use the images. Next day I met a young man called Andrei. He liked the ideea of this group, he agreed to pose and appreciated the pictures taken, but after we talked some more I found that he will turn 18 in two months from now.
Finally, today I made the approach to Nicoleta. She immediately agreed to pose. As the Sun was behind me I chose to turn around and backlit her hair as some direct light was squeezing through the buildings in the back and didn't want harsh light on her face.. If I would have to shoot again I will be more careful with the background. There is a red wall out there which pleasantly compliments her blue outfit, and i think i should have moved closer and filled the frame with that bright red.
Nicoleta is studying tourism and she was out for a walk. Before saying goodbye I gave her a card and thanked for accepting to be part of this project.

went down to eastern market to shoot this morning. i spotted mary as she was loading a bunch of plants into a truck. she caught me eye. i asked her the whole stranger thing and she happily agreed. then i got all weird and said "but can i have you stand over here in from of this red wall?" of course, she said yes. thanks mary! you're beautiful! :)

Was visiting family in Mumbai, India for a short vacation last month. The incessant but necessary rains really dampened a lot of plans making general travel within the city challenging - especially with the traffic. But still had the odd opportunity to walk around seeking strangers for the project. The next few encounters are, in no particular order, from my Mumbai days.

Meet Shaveta
Shaveta was in fact the first stranger I photographed during my visit to Mumbai, Having just traveled back home after a few years was still toying with the idea of moving the project further but was still adjusting to the newer environment. so was quite hesitant.
Was at a mall and while stopping by the food court for a quick lunch came across Shaveta with a a tall good looking dude who I later learned was her brother Nishanth. Its quite easy to the young lady is very beautiful and can grab attention even in a crowd. with her fabulous personality. And did I mention the sharp eyes? I waited for a while for them to finish lunch before approaching them at their table. As challenging as this is, its a little tougher when your subject has a 6 and half feet companion. But after hearing me out for a few minutes, Shaveta agreed with a smile to be on the project.
Shaveta is a doctor by profession - specializing in Ayurveda. A multi-faceted personality she is a artist at heart and has varied interests. She loves dancing, acting reading, writing and modelling. In fact she was in Mumbai for an audition for lending her voice for a commercial campaign. She also loves travelling - recently she had been to Nagaland.
What is her favorite quality of herself - that she can keep a positive attitude and ability to be happy at all times. If I cant be happy, then how can I treat others as a doctor was her simple yet deeply insightful observation.
We then proceeded to find a few spots in the mall to shoot a few quick pictures - although the overhead lights did make it a challenge. Funnily the mall security allows mobile pictures but thinks anything with a DSLR as a commercial shoot - so we had to move fast for a few clicks by the window. But Shaveta was confidence personified with her posing and expressions. Turns out that she was infact a winner of the Glitter Miss India pageant in 2014. I can't help giving myself kudos finding such standout strangers - jokes aside there definitely was something special about her even from a distance.
Nishant was a big help providing valuable suggestions and encouraging his sister. In fact we did a few quick clicks of the young man as we waited outside for his cab to arrive and was easy to see that modelling possibly runs in the family.
Thank you Shaveta (and Nishant) for all your time and trust doing these picture It was great making your acquaintance and I quite enjoyed photographing you. I wish you both a lot of success and best wishes for your future

I went to Highfields Park in Nottingham with no other purpose than adding to my stranger project. As I walked around the lake, I became aware of music coming from behind a rise and then saw a fairground ride appear above the trees. I headed in its direction a discovered that the university had put on a free fair for students. On the opposite side of the fair, I saw an expanse of grass in which many buttercups were in full flower. I thought this would make a great location in which to photograph a stranger. I went over a waited by the buttercups and presently two young ladies walked along the path I was standing on. I introduced the project and both were quick to say yes to being photographed.
I asked Tashi if she minded sitting in the grass, especially as she had white trousers on. No problem. Tashi asked where I wanted her so I pointed to a place that would give me a lot of buttercups in the background. Because of her sitting up pose I had to take the picture looking down at her so there was nothing other than buttercups behind her.
Tashi told me her guilty pleasure was eating ice cream as often as possible.
Thank-you Tashi for agreeing to being photographed for my stranger project and not minding if you got dirty in the process. I hope you like your portrait.

I met Stranger #117 at the Cleveland Museum of Art. I couldn’t help but notice her colorful mane from across the massive atrium that makes up the center of the museum complex. That said, it wasn’t until I saw her and a friend taking pictures of one another with their phones that I figured that I should get in on the action with a portrait of my own. And so I did.

Meet Evita. I was trying to do some more Stranger portraits but was not having a lot of luck in Shanghai. The I saw Evita taking with a group of friends. I approached and asked if she would mind having her photo taken for the project I was hoping to restart. She agreed and was really easy to work with.
Evita is Indonesian and was in Shanghai with her Husband who was doing business there. On that day she and her friends were planning on modelling some clothes for a clothing label they were working on. Thanks Evita
I have been following this 100 Strangers project for a couple of years. For a few times a have also been wondering if I would participate. This time I made the decision! I also decided to get the first portrait while being on a business trip to London. Foreign language for sure making it not easier for a shy guy like me!
At a third day I had planned to head to the Hyde Park straight from the work. And I did. I did walk for almost three hours in the lovely parks of London. Carrying almost whole time my camera ready for action in my hand. I did spot quite a few nice sceneries but didn’t talk to anybody. So no pictures there!
Finally I headed back to my hotel. Empty handed and a bit disappointed. Anyways I decided to stop by the Tower Bridge. I was looking for beautiful spots to shoot and possible people to interrupt. Again failed to talk to anybody. While being on the bridge the sun went down and it was getting dark. Time to head back to the hotel.
Then group of people handed their mobile phone for me and asked if I could take a picture of them. And I did. Pretty much at the same moment I spotted a couple of beautiful girls taking selfies together. They seemed to be so comfortable with taking pictures that I went and ask if I could take one picture of them too. After telling what would I use the pictures for they agreed. So,

I saw Liv sitting outside a café in Nottingham so went over and introduced my project to her. Liv was sitting with her back to the glass windows of the building, which I felt would make for an ideal background for the photograph. I grabbed one of the spare chairs and positioned it so I would be sitting opposite Liv and on the same level as her – I always feel this works better for a portrait than looking down or up at the subject. I then had to time my shots so there weren’t any passers-by reflected in the window. The colours inside the café were quite dark and Liv’s white top contrasted well with them and this combination shouted black and white to me so I finished Liv’s portrait as a monochrome image.
Liv told me she was a student and she was just about to complete her final year in events management. She’s hoping this degree will lead to a job in music and said her dream would be to tour with Bruce Springsteen.
When not studying, Liv enjoys snowboarding, horse riding, and hiking in L.A., especially in the Hollywood hills.
The one-word Liv used to describe herself was adventurous.
When I asked Liv what she can’t live without she said music.
If I could grant Liv a wish, what would it be for? “A huge mansion, with a large swimming pool, in the Hollywood hills,” she said.

I don’t know much about my 145th Stranger; Jay. I can’t imagine his story is a cheery one as he initially approached me to ask for some spare change. I gave him a buck, and he then sat down on a bench adjacent to the one I was sitting on, and we began to chat. I do not typically request portraits of panhandlers, but as I spoke to him I thought his eyes and face conveyed a story that I might be able to capture.

Alewya favourite all time record

Broadgate City of London.
There is a lot of metal and glass in Broadgate and on this day the sun was reflecting down on the grey concrete slabs making it almost futuristic in appearance and as Alewya strolled through the middle of it, it looked like a film set with her taking to the stage.
Alewya had just got back from working in New York, a city that she thought was fantastic. But after being there she realised how much she loved London, how it really was her home and how she felt she belonged here.
We talked about architecture and she had been reading about the now listed Trellick Tower designed by Erno Goldfinger and how the design of the tower block was the modernist way of replacing the terraced house which was all a good idea until the lift stopped working or some div used it as a toilet then people felt trapped and isolated. I think Goldfinger would have approved of Broadgate.
I asked Alewya what she was doing in New York and she said modelling. We talked a bit about the modelling industry and how it was getting more diverse and the same old stereotype types were slowly declining - very slowly too slowly in fact.
Alewya was very laid back and humble but also very confident and it was only later when I got home I found out that just before she was due to go to University that she was spotted by Cara Delevingne and that opened the door to a career in modelling which has included features in Vogue.
Alewya had great effortless style with her pinstriped three quarter length coat, black hooded crop top and black trousers with the band of her Calvin Klein pants sticking out finished off with Dr Marten boots. I love the way Dr Marten boots are worn by so many different people these days. In the 1970's they were synonymous with violence 'a smash of glass and the rumble of boots' and if you felt a kick it was normally the end of a Dr Marten boot. It became so bad that the police would make some football supporters take off their boots outside grounds resulting in a massive pile of boots outside the turnstiles.
Anyway Alewya's boot lace was undone which I pointed out to her but she confessed that it was very old and about to break.
We walked to the tube station at Liverpool Street and I thanked her for her time to which she replied 'No it was a pleasure'. I got the impression Alewya was really happy being who she was.

Meet Alex. Alex is 40, and he earns his money by juggling on the streets of local towns. Of German-Nigerian origin, he started to study mechanical engineering at the university in Darmstadt in 1990, but had to break off his studies for health reasons just before graduating. He has been juggling for a living for 6 years - he made a clear distinction between living "on" the street and living "from" the street, i.e. he lives from what the street gives him. He also seemed genuinely interested in the 100 Strangers project and wished me luck, as I also wished him.
I was looking for a dirty grainy effect, so I shot at ISO400 - I like the result as well as the dynamic sense of movement.

Teenagers with skateboards are a common sight on the streets of Newtown, so it was a little surprising that I noticed a slightly more mature woman walking towards me carrying a rather large skateboard. Curiosity got the better of me so I stopped her to chat about her board and to ask for a photo.
Serene was a little hesitant at first but soon warmed to the idea after a more detailed explanation of the project and what I wanted her to do.
The blue wall used as the BG was an immediate choice as it was right off the street beside where we met. It also ties in nicely with her scarf. I've included a full length shot so you can see her board as well.
Serene was a very quietly spoken woman and as per her namesake, very calm and "serene". Originally from Chicago, she has been living in Oz for a couple of years.
She uses her skateboard to get around Newtown regularly and didn't think it was such a big deal.

We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once, before even a word has been spoken.
So I would ask, if there is the desire to speak , why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you..? We should.
This photo is from my Street photography collection. I met this young lady in front of the restaurant she was working at. After exchanging smiles she kindly gifted her mesmerizing beauty to my photo.
Stranger #65 – Yuliia – I spotted her in the centre of Wrocław, Poland, because her bright red and orange style immediately caught my attention. I approached her and asked for a photo. Yuliia seemed to be slightly surprised but she quickly agreed after I explained the project. We moved a few meters away from where we talked and I started taking pictures. It was just the right time – a huge dark cloud was moving towards the city and it was moving fast. It provided a nice shadow pretty much everywhere in the area and while that was the good thing about it, there was a downside to it as well - after a few shots it started to snow a little bit. It wasn’t a big deal but there are some snowflakes visible in Yuliia’s hair. Anyway, I took quite a lot of pictures and we chatted a bit. It turned out she is from Ukraine and wanted to know a thing or two about the city. We parted ways after some time and I consider this encounter as a very nice one with great results. I was extremely lucky with the timing – ten minutes later my wife and me were sitting at our favourite vegan restaurant and watching a heck of a snowfall outside :)

I was on my way to a business dinner located far away from the city. I arrived at my location about a half an hour early, so instead of sitting around waiting, I decided to explore this rural area with the hopes of finding something worth photographing. Sure enough, I only drove a couple of minutes when I came across an old fashioned covered bridge.
I parked my car and made my way down to the banks of the river. I was just sizing up my shot of the bridge when a group of four young people came up behind me. They were not concerned with me as they were off to take a dip in the river. I must admit that photographing a covered bridge was not terribly exciting to me, however the prospect of a stranger shot underneath a bridge was quite enticing. The group had made their way out to a small sand/gravel bar that I could not access simply because I was wearing shoes. I sat there for a minute or two as I wasn’t 100% sure about a portrait shot yet because my primary subject had her back turned to me. Once she finally turned my way and I could see her face, I immediately went into action.
I had to call out to the group, and it was my potential model’s boyfriend that responded and started walking toward me. I started my spiel and was essentially just speaking to him (I had no problem with this…in fact I believe that it is often more important to sell the boyfriend on a portrait and then everything else will fall into place). It wasn’t until I was just finishing my pitch when she walked up behind him and caught my request for a portrait. They consulted with one another and agreed to the shoot. Then he started preparing her by adjusting her necklaces…a perfect sign. I reached across the small river inlet that separated us and shook her hand as she introduced herself as Amber.
The set-up for the shot was a natural. The sand/gravel bar jutted out to a point into the river…it was ideal. From the river bank I described to Amber how I wanted her to pose, and she took the instructions very well. This is obviously the shot we ended up with. I am quite pleased with the results, especially considering I was just killing a little time before dinner.

I met this gentleman while walking through the Jewelry District of downtown LA. When I told him about the strangers project and asked for a photo, his only condition was that it not be a close-up. As I was about to snap the shutter, he told me to hang on and proceeded to pull a chap stick from a travel bag he had with him. Then he gave me this smile.

I met the 132nd stranger of my project at the Valley of Fire State Park visitor center. The VoF is an amazing place only 90 minutes outside of Las Vegas, but in early July it can be brutally hot. The temperature was approaching 120 oF when Mrs. Paco and I were out bouncing around the rocks. Our stop at the visitor center was primarily to provide us a little relief from the scorching sun and heat. I ran into my latest stranger when the two of us were both partaking in a universal male ritual: we were both waiting for our women outside of the bathrooms. I was not really in stranger search mode, but when I saw him I thought he had such a fantastic presence that I knew that I had to request a portrait.
I engaged him in a conversation, and he introduced himself as Phillip. I couldn’t help myself and wasted little time before asking him about his heritage. I was fairly confident that he was of American Indian descent, and when I inquired, he proudly informed me that he was nearly 100% full blooded Native American. The thing that was a little surprising to me was that he was not a local. His name was Phillip and he was actually a tourist from Oklahoma, and (like me) he was staying in Las Vegas but he couldn’t resist visiting this natural wonder.
By the time the ladies exited the WC, he had already agreed to a portrait. I wanted to shoot Phillip outdoors, although I knew the lighting was going to give me fits. The contrasts between the brilliant sunlight and the relatively dark shadows had given me troubles in earlier portraits during my trip to Vegas, but I had such a fantastic mountain desert backdrop with a Native American model to boot that I just had to make it happen. I had left my camera in the car, so I ran out to get it, and on my way back I surveyed the area for a suitable shoot location. I found an area reasonably shaded by the eaves of the building. I darted back indoors to where my party was waiting, and then I quickly directed them to that spot. The light / shadow contrast was still pretty substantial, but the intense sunlight was so omnipresent that I think I got some latent reflection off of the surrounding ground and building that helped brighten the shadows a little bit. I ended up with an exposure that was workable. So I now present this portrait of Phillip, my final stranger portrait from my recent trip to the American Southwest. And by the way…if you ever find yourself in Las Vegas, do yourself a big favor and grab your camera and drive out to the Valley of Fire. You will not be disappointed.

When I asked Clara if she was local, she said “I am now. I moved here yesterday”. I asked her what floats her boat and she said “water”! She reminded me that boats float on water. Clara went on to tell me that she enjoys yoga and music. She would like to learn more. Clara sings but wants lessons to help her to improve her delivery. She would also like another instrument to add to her voice and plans to learn guitar. She would like to join a choir too.
Clara has been travelling in North and South America and Asia. Most of the places were much hotter than the weather we were experiencing. When I asked if I might take Clara's photo, she asked me what the time was, as she wanted to visit the White Spring before it shut for the day. When we had chatted a bit and I had taken a few photos, we walked down the Tor together. Half way down there was a bench and I asked Clara if I might take a couple more photos and she said yes.
When I asked Clara if she planned to buy a guitar, she said yes. She had not bought one before because she would have had to carry it on her travels. There is nothing to stop her now.
I told Clara that I would send her small copies of the photos and a link to full sized versions on Dropbox. Clara was pleased that I was going to send her the photos. She said that her mum would be happy to see them.
Thank you Clara for agreeing to be in my project. It was good to meet you today. I hope that you will get your guitar soon. Best wishes with your singing as you develop and as you join with others.
