My first Uni Brief is to approach strangers in the street, who I think have a good sense of style or interesting look, and asking if I can photograph them. Today I went in to Newport town centre to take some photos, however this was the only one I got as shortly after someone tried to steal my camera. Hopefully I'll have better luck tomorrow.

We got bored with the path and decided to just free climb up the mountain – or – at least the depth of scale in this photo makes that seem plausible.

i took this shot after dinner. i almost didn't bother, but knew that i'd be annoyed with myself that i had gotten this far only to miss a day because i just didn't feel like taking a picture of myself. i'm still wearing what i slept in the night before, an ugly pink t-shirt that j brought back for me from columbus.

What a perfect occasion to break out the 18 year old Glenlivet. Evening time, reading a good book, about to go to bed...

And I was able to shoot another glass photo for Project Flickr! Sipping the scotch as I write this.... mmmm!

Lomo Lubitel 2 ~ Fuji Superia 400

This camera was a gift, from the very lovely slithy-toves... thank you slithy, for getting me into the world of 120 roll film!

The shots from this first roll came out better than I could have hoped. They're all in focus, for a start (maybe there's a knack to getting the focussing right, but I found the little magnifier and ground glass screen approach tricky, to say the least), and vaguely pointing in the right direction (I still find this aspect of using a TLR deeply unintuitive... whichever way I wanted to move the viewfinder, I completely failed to find the right combination of hand/arm movements. I must have made a comical sight, gingerly waving my arms about, in a sort of slow-motion expressive dance). And I seem to have got the exposure in the right ballpark, too, thanks to the sunny-16 rule.

Even with what is, by all accounts, an, er, less than pro-quality lens, I'm amazed by how much detail there is in a 6x6 negative. I love this camera... it's such fun! Even with the light leaks...

No, this isn't an Aztec step pyramid. It's a straightup view of a chimney.

october 7, 2009 - today, i turned 28 years old. my coworkers and students made it a really awesome day and the phillies gave me a game 1 win in the nlds! i took this photo before heading out to meet up with laurel, ryan and john at the drafting room to celebrate. (it was john's birthday, too!)

Inside the southern spire of the Köln cathedral.

The climb up here was exhausting. 96 metres up a tight winding spiral staircase. And when you get here, there are holes in the roof, letting the rain in! We got a bit wet. But it was worth it.

My wife alway says the blue of the sky in Spain is different than in Germany. In the beginning I was very sceptical (the sky is the same in any part, or?) but after some time, I can only confirm it: The blue is much more intense than in Germany. If it's for the location more north or the near of the Mediterranean Sea, I don't know.

But once you compare the two you will say the same.

Especially at noon when the sun is at its zenith, the sky is darker - depending on the camera angle.

Putting the sky as a main part of the photo normally leads to a boring photo.

So, to emphasize it anyway, I needed a good but simple contrast and composition.

Shot on Velvia with Nikon F601. Post-processing in PSE.

Everyone seems to be taking these recently. i just want to be accepted.

From right underneath Louise Bourgeois' giant spider Maman, looking up at the womb, gently cradling its load of glass eggs.

The way this image has turned out was a complete accident of post-processing... I was trying to create layer masks in photoshop to separately bring out the details of sky and spider, and happened upon this steely, alien effect. I rather like the way it differentiates the creature from its environment.
