The columns rise up like massive trunks, tapering and finally branching out like a crown at the ceiling.
I could've stayed inside knowing it is cloudy and will be all night. Or I could've assumed the stations may be wrong, and go outside to suddenly see this above my head. Always see for yourself. I was taken off guard by this one and it was one of the best
The little girl was helping me scan some caboose images, and this was an image we made of her sitting on the scanner.
No ice, no mixers...
After a roughish drive (for a Civic, anyway) and a "I think we're in the right place" hike/climb out into nowhere, we found Moonshine Arch. Big arch, nice scenery, and a number of other little arches and windows to explore right next door.

June 3rd, 2013 - 44 Quiet Nights, Day 5 - Dead Horse Point to Vernal, Utah.
Destination: Vernal, Utah. Setting up for a hike into Dinosaur National Monument, we'd try for one of the state parks north of Vernal, either Red Fleet or Steinaker.

This is taken at No 1 Poultry, an office and retail building located at the junction of Poultry and Queen Victoria Street, by the Bank of England, in the City of London. It was opened in 1997.
The image was taken from the basement area which has a few shops and cafes and an entrance to Bank Underground Station. Nothing special, until you look up. I was especially struck by the beautiful coloured windows in the offices above.
The picture was taken with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20mm lens at 10mm. Taken handheld. 3 raw images 2EV spacing with an additional 4th and brighter exposure created in Camera Raw.. Outputted in Photomatix on fusion real estate settings for a natural look for an HDR.
I used Topaz DeNoise and then Topaz Clarity
In Photoshop I used a clarity effect using unsharp mask with settings of 32 amount and 32 radius. A slight vignette was applied using the elliptical marquee tool with a large feather and brightness adjustment.
At the end of my free promotion of my new eBook, Understand Your Camera I had total worldwide downloads of 318 including 199 in the USA and 86 in the UK. For a lot of the period to now the book was No 1 in Amazon free photography books in the UK but also by the end moved up to No 1 in the higher category of Arts and Photography. The book went to No 3 in Photography in the USA. I gained 3 reviews to date and a much higher profile on Amazon. My thanks to everybody who downloaded it.

I had to get up far too early for a Sunday this morning to taxi my son. However I decided to make the most of it and I packed my camera bag despite the fact that the sky was grey.
Once I dropped him off the sky started to brighten, those grey clouds gave way to a fairly interesting sky.
This image has been done so often by so many photographers but not by me - until now :)
(this is HDR with 3 bracketed images - I don't like to overcook)
I believe it is physically and psychologically impossible to walk through a forest with a wide angle lens and not take one of these shots.
Go ahead, try it.... I'll wait.

It is extremely rare to see the Northern Lights like we could tonight, here in southern Norway. Both straight up and to the south.
Of course the aurora corona and the Northern Lights dance is even more amazing in the north, but this is awesome to be here in the south.
"An aurora corona is the most spectacular form of the Northern Lights, occurring when the aurora is directly overhead (at the zenith), causing shimmering light rays to fan out from a central point, creating a crown-like or "exploding" effect with vibrant colors and fast motion, requiring strong solar activity and a specific vantage point directly underneath."

Ever wonder why trees always grow straight up....even on a sloped surface??? It's amazing how they know so much about their surroundings. All plants, apparently, have an inherent “sense” of gravity. The sensory organs for this are located in the basic cells of the growing plant. At the top of a shoot and at the bottom of a root, a cluster of dividing cells can be found. These cells are responsible for the direction of the growth, and thus make the tree grow straight up.
I took this photograph along the Cypress Trail at the top of a bluff overlooking Fitzgerald Marine Reserve located in the northern California coastal community of Moss Beach in San Mateo County.
Ever get the feeling where you are not sure if you are in control of your muse, or it is in control of you?
I do sometimes. I mean, I definitely march to my own beat when it comes to photography, but sometimes that beat marches me and I am left trying to balance when to believe and when to not. I have found that it tends to be right about as often as I am, so it is a tough decision usually. ;-)
Anyway, I did not mean to post this image tonight. But my walk home from work staring at the clouds awakened something and by the time I got to the house I was convinced this was the image that had to be posted. So I went with the feeling.
These cloudscapes are a lot like my sandscapes in the sense that the practice of seeing them completely revolutionizes the way I experience the world.
I like that.
On a related tangent, I am seriously considering taking a vacation in September to Florida to witness the final shuttle launch. Something about this stirs something in me too. Maybe I have a closet astronaut in me. ;-) Anyway, this is just in the idea-kicking-around-in-my-head stage at the moment. Any Floridians out there have advice on this? I already have a good line on tickets to the causeway, but I wouldn't mind hearing other helpful info.

I just got my Tamron 10-24mm in the mail. I didn't know it was possible to fall in love with a lens until today. =) Despite some of the bad reviews i read about this lens saying it was unsharp. I was really impressed with the quality. I was using it at F8 though, and they say sharpness falls at a wider aperture.
Unfortunately, the sky was dull and grey, and it was quite windy outside, so I decided to get some interior shots for my first try with the super wide.This is the interior of the British Columbia Legislature's copper roofed dome.
As soon as the weather gets a little nicer. I'll be on my way back to Vancouver for a shooting extravaganza!

Sheer granite walls rise straightup off the floor of the Yosemite Valley. They are massive, photographs do them no justice for how imposing they are.
This pic shows the difference between this Anhinga's straight as a pin beak and that of a Cormorant, a very similar water bird. The Cormorant has blue eyes, too, and the Anhinga's are red.
This female was photographed at Reed Canal Park, and was in a very advanced stage of molting when I saw her. The poor thing looked as if a dog had gotten a hold of her wings! I researched it and found that when they molt, they lose all their feathers at one time, making it impossible for them to fly. It's a very vulnerable time for these birds, and they sure look funny while it's going on! I have other photos of her in my Reed Canal Park and Its Wildlife album, and will be posting a few more eventually, too.
