STORE FRONT II - A HISTORY PRESERVED

Out Now! James and Karla Murray have been capturing impeccably accurate photographs of New York City since the 1990s. In the course of their travels throughout the city’s boroughs they’ve also taken great care to document the stories behind the scenery. The Murrays have rendered the out of the way bodegas, candy shops and record stores just as faithfully as the historically important institutions and well known restaurants, bars and cafes. From the Stonewall Inn to the Brownsville Bike Shop and The Pink Pussycat to Smith and Wolensky, the Murrays reveal how New York’s beleaguered mom & pop business stand in sharp contrast to the city’s rapidly evolving corporate facade. 348 Pages Hardcover 13 1/4" x 12" $65

In Old Montreal next door to Notre Dame Cathedral.

I've passed this storefront countless times, never stopping to think twice about it. It is one of many window displays on this shopping strip and by far one of the most interesting looking ones...if you stop to look at it.

Finally, I stopped and took in all its oddity–the colorful wigs, heads turned in every direction, the reflection of the store. Just think of all the personalities who could come alive by wearing one of these wigs.

I must admit, it's a weird photo and I was hesitant to settle on this one for this prompt, but I am so intrigued by it.

This was a cool storefront mural I found in Arthur Ontario - free use

An old storefront on Main St.

I love tile that looks like a carpet.

Most of the surrounding buildings have concrete or that broken terra cotta tile look.

Unfortunately, plans are to raze this block.

An intriguing storefront, shrouded in black and crowned by metal art, in State College, Pennsylvania. Art space? Goth bar? Sex club? I was sorely disappointed when it turned out to be a hair salon advertising "A Personal Approach To Hair Care."

One of these storefronts used to be Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre.

We moved into our storefront at 3404 N. Figueroa St. in May of 2012. I took until October of 2014 to get this sign made and electrified. There is a huge tree that blocks it, so it was always more of a symbolic gesture to have a nice sign up above the storefront doors.

The vinyl work was done by James Cerasani. The electrical work and installation was done by Somerset Waters of the Pacific Electric Worker-Owned Co-op.

These storefronts are located at Lee Highway and North Monroe Street. On the left is the "Philippine Oriental Market." On the right is a rod and reel repair shop.

A visit to the Schuylkill Mall, 11/8/14

I don't know what this was back in the day, but I have a feeling it was an actual retail institution.

Take notice on the right where the light hits the wall, notice how it looks like an outine? I think this was the original entrance of whatever operated here but after it closed it was boarded over and the store was abandoned. I'm also thinking that when the Railroad club opened, they took the storefront as is and that's why it resembles the other boarded over storefronts in the mall. Also, if you look through the window shown you can see a gate that is just as wide as this outline, further proving my theory.

I wish I could use notes to illustrate further what I'm talking about, but you know flickr..

*EDIT 3/3/15*

Found out that it was originally a store called "Prints 'n Things." I'm not sure if they were a chain or not.

*This is my very first attempt at documenting a shopping mall. Armed only with a 4th generation iPod Touch, the quality didn't turn out as well as I expected and the general framing and composition of the shots suffered in some areas. I hope to both get better equipment and sensibilities to continue doing this.*

This interesting block with surviving period storefronts is located near the borough hall in Downtown Sewickley, PA. The vacancy seems somewhat unusual for that area.
