Russ & Daughters Cafe on Orchard Street in the Lower East Side. The 4th-generation owners of the historic Russ & Daughters Appetizers shop @russanddaughters opened this sit-down restaurant a few years ago so that people could enjoy their smoked salmon, sturgeon, herring 🐟and caviar along with other Jewish comfort food including knishes, potato latkes and matzo ball soup. We not only love this cafe's food but also love how they modeled both the exterior of the cafe including its #neon #signage and the interior on the original 1904 location. #storefront #typevstime #dailytype #signgeeks #ig_signage #signcollective #everything_signage #neonsign #lodownny #breakthefast

Another nicely painted and maintained storefront in tiny Constantine, Michigan. I don't know what this is used for.
I have fallen in love with this 40s storefront! Minus that goofy thatched roof thing over the floating display case. That roof needs to go away, but anyway this storefront has so many cool mid century details that make it so special!
Hayward, CA
I wonder why they did these to the storefronts. It's very common. I can see why they would have changed the storefront, to add more glass or whatever, but I don't know why they angle it back like this.
a small local space that used to be a dollar shop (not everything cost a dollar though, those liars!) they're now closed because next door is a "dollar tree" store that's going to be opened soon. not cool, dude...
prior to it being empty, and prior to it being a dollar store, this place was an internet/gaming cafe. and before that, i really don't remember. i'd have to dig back into my childhood...
also: i never realized how long (lengthwise) this store was until it was empty.
ODC1: Storefront,
Michael's is a fabric, arts and crafts store that closed in this location about 3 years ago and the store has been empty ever since. It's not too hard to find empty stores.
The zig-zag glass facade of this storefront is pretty darn cool, but even better are the tiles below the window: black hexagons!
I was looking through some pics in my my archive and found an old photo of The Only Seafoods storefront from 2009. I took this early one morning just after the little eatery had been closed down by the City for drug and health violations. You can see the order taped to the front door. This was probably Vancouver's oldest restaurant which started off as the Vancouver Oyster Saloon in 1916. The Thodos brothers then took it over and it became the Only Fish and Oyster House. The place went by a few other names over the years including The Only Fish Cafe, The Only Oyster Cafe, and The Only Cafe.
There was a recent story about the building in the Globe and Mail recently since the old place is being torn down. There was a small mention that The Vancouver Historical Society has been storing the 1950 neon sign all these years. They were hoping the facade of the building might be saved and the sign could be put back up in its original location. But once the building is gone it's going to be an open air market for the locals. Maybe it's time the sign was donated to the Museum of Vancouver to be part of its permanent neon exhibit.
Including a former bar at left (I need a good close-up shot of this. Finding lots of former bars on the NW side). Technically in Albany Park (across from Irving Park)
@cwpencilenterprise was founded online in 2014 by Caroline Weaver, an amateur pencil collector and lifelong pencil lover. Their original store location (shown in our photo) was opened on Forsyth Street in March 2015 and their current larger shop on Orchard Street features an in-store testing station where you can try out dozens of pencils on a pad before purchasing. The staff are very knowledgeable and know everything about the pencils, erasers, notepads and pencil sharpeners they sell. The pencil shop also has a selection of antique pencils produced before 1980 which aren’t in production anymore and has a hot foil stamper so they can personalize pencils purchased at the store.
Happy National Pencil ✏️Day to everyone who (like us) still uses pencils!
Film. We love the simple #stenciled lettering this shoe 👞repair shop has as well as the glow the #neonsign is giving to the products displayed on the window. #disappearingfaceofnewyork
The mural depicts the story of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl (Sleeping Woman/Mujer dormida), the two volcanoes close to Mexico City.

I'm quite happy to see a midcentury storefront so intact. The raised window boxes and terrazzo are stunning. So often these indoor/outdoor spaces are gutted to the sidewalk to increase interior square footage, but I adore the talent of window-dressing and am thrilled to see this one still going strong.
