NYC photo project shows change in storefronts over time Photographers James and Karla Murray have been documenting the changes in storefronts all over New York City since the 1990s - and their shots reveal…
Joe & John Pizzeria & Restaurant on Myrtle Avenue in Ridgewood, Queens was founded in 1968. We really loved its unique retro facade adorned with yellow and mint green-colored panels giving it a sort of big-top circus 🎪 look. Although the #pizza place is still in business, the original Joe and John have long retired and new owners and management took over the #pizzeria and modernized the exterior and replaced the #vintage #signage. We photographed the #storefront at night for our book “New York Nights” but also took a daytime photo which appears in our book “Store Front II-A History Preserved".

Today, we visited @joeandjohns_ to have a classic slice of pizza 🍕 with our pizza-loving dog Hudson. To see what we both thought of the pizza we tried, please watch & subscribe to our JamesandKarla YouTube channel, see direct link below & in bio and IG story.

This photo does not do this storefront justice! This vintage vitrolite facade was restored when Potbelly moved into this storefront, which was a former jewelry store (Erickson Jewelers).
Here is a link to a Chicago blog which includes several older photos of this storefront in its earlier incarnation, plus a good number of other vintage porcelain & vitrolite facades. It is from 2010, so a number of these images may no longer exist:
This small jazz club 🎶opened in 1944 and became a very popular spot attracting not only locals from #BedStuy but also from Harlem. We absolutely love its #neon signage with its stainless and #vitrolite base. Sadly this club's popularity declined in the 1980s and by 2001 it was abandoned. #signgeeks #signage #ig_signage #typography #type #dailytype #typevstime #signcollective #signsofgrime #everything_signage
A Botanica is a shop that sells folk and alternative medicine, religious candles and statues, amulets and other products that are regarded as magical. We love this Botanica's #handpainted signage and colorful #storefront.
We just heard that Sam Ash Music 🎵 which was founded in 1924 in Brooklyn and once had a store in the Theater District’s famed Music Row is closing its doors on its flagship 34th Street location. This closure reminded us of our photo of Rudy’s Music Stop which was founded by Rudy Pensa and his wife Fran in 1978 on 48th Street’s “Music Row”. Rudy was was forced to close this iconic location after 37 years in business in 2015 after the landlord (Comjen Associated) who also owned other neighboring buildings did not renew his lease. Thankfully Rudy had already opened a SoHo location (which is still in business today) and was able to continue selling electric, acoustic, bass, and vintage guitars as well as amps and accessories for guitarists. Let us know if you ever visited West 48th street to browse the many family-owned shops for instruments 🎸 🎹 including Rudy’s Music Stop, Manny’s Music and Alex Music.

Our 2011 photo of the original 48th Street location of Rudy’s Music Stop is one of many included in our book “Store Front NYC: Photographs of the City’s Independent Shops, Past and Present” (swipe left for 2nd photo of page spread ) which is available in booksellers worldwide. Store Front NYC includes many of our favorite storefront photos taken using 35mm film in the early 2000s as well as many previously unpublished photos.

Kaufman's Army & Navy on West 42nd Street near 8th Ave opposite the Port Authority Bus Terminal was founded in 1938 and is one of the oldest military supply stores in the U.S. 🇺🇸 and the oldest in NYC.
We love their handpainted signage which the owner told us was commissioned by his mother during the height of the Vietnam War. Our Photo from 2012 (when the two wooden-heeled Hotchkiss mounted cannons were outside the #storefront) and full interview with 3rd generation owner appear in book "Store Front II-A History Preserved".
