Kaufman's Army & Navy on West 42nd Street near 8th Ave opposite the Port Authority Bus Terminal was founded in 1938 and is one of the oldest military supply stores in the U.S. 🇺🇸 and the oldest in NYC.
We love their handpainted signage which the owner told us was commissioned by his mother during the height of the Vietnam War. Our Photo from 2012 (when the two wooden-heeled Hotchkiss mounted cannons were outside the #storefront) and full interview with 3rd generation owner appear in book "Store Front II-A History Preserved".

Yesterday, during our architectural tour of west 42nd Street, we visited @kaufmans_armynavynyc and purchased an authentic World War II dog tag customized while we waited for our rescue dog Hudson @hudsonpittienyc as well as a few other fabulous items. To watch our video on our JamesandKarla YouTube channel, see direct link below & in bio and IG story.

When we posted our #analog photo the other day of Mt. Carmel Candy Store we received a message from one of our followers who was touched by our photo as it brought back memories of the neighborhood. She told us that she and her family lived above C&D Candy Store and her grandmother was the super of the building. Her mother ended up buying C&D Candy Store 🍭 when she was 18 years old and the whole family worked there at one point. She asked us to please post our photo of the shop as the family recently lost their grandmother (who was the matriarch of the family) and it would "mean the world to us". We love when we hear from followers who have such a personal connection to our photos and especially when it is so meaningful 💔to them! It touches our heart too 💓!

It was named for the patron saint of the mentally ill and was known for its 🍺 pints of Guiness and also for its traditional Irish ☘️ breakfast (which we enjoyed) of eggs 🍳, baked beans, sausage and rashers and sliced potatoes . Sadly the Irish 🇮🇪 tavern closed a few days ago after 24 years in business.
This was my wife's second visit to the UK and I wanted to get her out of London. so we settled on Cambridge. Very good choice. We lucked out by having a day with great weather. We started off by going to King's College and it's famous Chapel, found an excellent Indian restaurant for lunch, hit the Fitzwilliams Museum (unfortunately many rooms were closed for repairs) and then just wandered around town. I wished we would have stayed another day - poor planning on my part, but there is always next time.
I took these photos in May 2018.
Happened upon this mysterious storefront. Everything about this is great: the numbers, the stone finish, the stuff piled up inside. What is it???

Emey's Bike Shop in the Gramercy neighborhood has a facade made of zinc, which dates back to around 1900. The former owner of this #bicycle 🚴 shop told us that Time Magazine's initial headquarters were once located at this address. Photo from 2003 appears in our book, "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York". #signgeeks #type #typevstime #typography #dailytype #signcollective #ig_signage #everything_signage #storefront #disappearingfaceofnewyork
We sit in an outside part of a coffee shop, a chest-high planter full of thyme to our right. We look along a row of shops, the footpath in from of them shaded by a continuous verandah. We see a chemist, a fish and chip shop, a bar, another cafe and a newsagency. There is a car park next to the footpath, and behind the cars a tall gum tree shades an area for public seating.

View of two storefronts. On the building to the left, "The Bank of Randolph" is written
in a first story window, and "Dentist" is written in a second story window. On the
building to the right, a sign reads "Drugstore" above an awning.
