In 1976, when I bicycled through -then- Czecjoslovakia, communism was still going strong, which was noticeable in all storefronts...

The front of the JC Penney store at the Empire Mall at Sioux Falls, SD. I was out watching storms there that day, and had a good view of one near the mall, so I decided to take a photo of this cool old storefront on the way. Taken from a public road.

I liked these colorful storefronts in an otherwise somewhat dull building.

Some discoveries from archive.com. Images from the book "How to Give Your Store the Look That Sells" 1951.

Glizzy’s, the hot dog shop on St. Marks Place in the East Village has suddenly closed after being open for only two months. When we first saw bright signage being installed for this storefront, we were very hopeful because many long-standing small businesses on this stretch of St Marks have closed in recent years including the original location of Trash & Vaudeville and St. Marks Comics (both have thankfully relocated), as well as Grassroots Tavern and Sounds. Sadly this shop which specialized in hot dogs with toppings such as smoked brisket with Mike’s Hot Honey, fried shallots & mapo sauce, and chili 🌶️ crisp, permanently closed according to the owner due to rising food costs and minimum wage increases as well for the fact that they did not receive “crazy buzz from the start”.

We always tell people that our ongoing project to document small businesses in New York City is a race against time due to the many factors stacked against the success of a small business but this closure is definitely for us the shortest amount of time that we have seen a business open and then close. Please let us know if any small businesses in your neighborhood are struggling recently and or recently closed as we are trying to help raise awareness of their importance through our photography.

I love the subtle differences in all the blues in this shot and I did capture it exactly when I wanted to. The DP1 isn't the quickest camera in the world, but I've rarely missed a shot because of what it did, and not because I wasn't paying attention.

Oh yeah, and check out the seagull on the top of the building in the background!

"James and Karla Murray’s classic tome STORE FRONT II, from their ongoing Store Front series, is now available (Dec 2017) for the first time in its covetable “mini” format. The Murrays have been capturing impeccable photographs from the streets of New York City since the 1990s. With Store Front II they’ve continued their documentation of an important cross-section of New York’s “Mom and Pop” economy. The Murray’s penetrating photographs are only half the story though. Their copious background texts, gleaned largely from interviews with the stores’ owners and employees, bring wonderful color and nuance to the importance of these unique one-off establishments."

I just love these old storefronts. When I'm on a photowalk, like today, I can't help but make an exposure.

This storefront along William Street in downtown Chatham displays a very stylish old fashioned mural. The shops in this building are Kiki’s Klosit & Ryan’s Room and the Purple Pansy Florist.

NYC photo project shows change in storefronts over time Photographers James and Karla Murray have been documenting the changes in storefronts all over New York City since the 1990s - and their shots reveal…

Joe & John Pizzeria & Restaurant on Myrtle Avenue in Ridgewood, Queens was founded in 1968. We really loved its unique retro facade adorned with yellow and mint green-colored panels giving it a sort of big-top circus 🎪 look. Although the #pizza place is still in business, the original Joe and John have long retired and new owners and management took over the #pizzeria and modernized the exterior and replaced the #vintage #signage. We photographed the #storefront at night for our book “New York Nights” but also took a daytime photo which appears in our book “Store Front II-A History Preserved".

Today, we visited @joeandjohns_ to have a classic slice of pizza 🍕 with our pizza-loving dog Hudson. To see what we both thought of the pizza we tried, please watch & subscribe to our JamesandKarla YouTube channel, see direct link below & in bio and IG story.

Storefronts in Kinosaki, Japan

This photo does not do this storefront justice! This vintage vitrolite facade was restored when Potbelly moved into this storefront, which was a former jewelry store (Erickson Jewelers).

Here is a link to a Chicago blog which includes several older photos of this storefront in its earlier incarnation, plus a good number of other vintage porcelain & vitrolite facades. It is from 2010, so a number of these images may no longer exist:

This small jazz club 🎶opened in 1944 and became a very popular spot attracting not only locals from #BedStuy but also from Harlem. We absolutely love its #neon signage with its stainless and #vitrolite base. Sadly this club's popularity declined in the 1980s and by 2001 it was abandoned. #signgeeks #signage #ig_signage #typography #type #dailytype #typevstime #signcollective #signsofgrime #everything_signage

A few quick shots from an outing on Lake Street in Minneapolis with e50e and Mold-A-Rama. The Lake Street neighborhood is currently undergoing a gentrification process, so many of these unique neighborhood storefronts will soon be gone.

Click here for the same store from e50e's perspective.

This liquor shop not only has great #script #signage but also a great graphic of the god Neptune. We took this #analog photo in 2006 for our book "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York" (hence the low liquor prices compared to today's prices). #storefront #type #disappearingfaceofnewyork

A Botanica is a shop that sells folk and alternative medicine, religious candles and statues, amulets and other products that are regarded as magical. We love this Botanica's #handpainted signage and colorful #storefront.
