In honor of Veteran's Day and the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I which killed 10 million men in fighting that involved 32 countries around the globe 🌎, we are posting Kaufman's Army & Navy in Hell's Kitchen. Kaufman's was founded in 1938 and is one of the oldest military supply stores in the U.S. 🇺🇸 and the oldest in NYC. We love their #handpainted #signage which the owner told us was commissioned by his mother during the height of the Vietnam War. Photo and full interview with 3rd generation owner appear in book "Store Front II-A History Preserved". Thank you all who have served and to those on active duty! 🇺🇸 #veteransday #veteransupport #signcollective #signsunited #everything_signage #insta_america #americana #insta_america_americana #signgeeks #fontastic #typevstime #supportourtroops #ig_signage Kaufman's Army & Navy #lettering #dailytype #seeyourcity

Established in 1864, it’s become famous for the fact that O. Henry is said to have written the classic short Christmas story “The Gift of the Magi” while dining and drinking here. We recently visited Pete’s to photograph its lovely holiday decorations and to chat with restaurateur Gary Egan and manager A.C. about the establishment’s unique history, connection to O. Henry, and time as a speakeasy during Prohibition.

Addeo Bakery in the Little Italy 🇮🇹 of the Bronx is a family-owned business that has been in operation since 1929. This historic Italian 🇮🇹bread 🍞 #bakery is run by the 3rd-generation brothers, Laurence and Tommy Addeo. We absolutely love ❤️ its beautiful #script #handpainted sign and their Pane di Casa, an oval white Italian bread that is made from what Laurence described to us as "a long-term dough that takes as much as 8 hours of preparation in fermentation, scaling and proofing before it even goes into the oven". •We visited both locations of @addeobakers yesterday (this shop is on Arthur Avenue and their main bakery operation is on nearby Hughes Avenue) as we live-streamed our walk around @bronxlittleitaly and supported many small including Addeo, where we found out that they now bake a whole wheat Pane di Casa (swipe left for 2nd photo) which just like their original white bread was absolutely delicious!

To watch our visit to Addeo Bakers and see it’s original interior (we even have our Pane di Casa sliced using their #vintage bread slicing machine) please subscribe to our JamesandKarla YouTube channel, see direct link below & in bio and IG story.

one of the happy accidents. I was going to get a few things and the sky and the halo rainbow caught my eye. makes a pretty good picture all around, I think. I really like this store. most of my house came from there.

I have another pic of this that shows the rainbow more and the store less. I'll post that soon too.

BOOK EVENT this Sunday: Community Conversations: Village Round Table November 19, 2017, 1:30 p.m. at the Jefferson Market Library FREE Link to register below...

James and Karla Murray’s classic tome from their ongoing Store Front series is now available (Dec 2017) for the first time in its covetable “mini” format. The Murrays have been capturing impeccable photographs from the streets of New York City since the 1990s. With Store Front II they’ve continued their documentation of an important cross-section of New York’s “Mom and Pop” economy. The Murray’s penetrating photographs are only half the story though. Their copious background texts, gleaned largely from interviews with the stores’ owners and employees, bring wonderful color and nuance to the importance of these unique one-off establishments.

Community Conversations: Village Round Table We are looking forward to speaking at this free event!

I loved walking around the Medinas in the morning before all the hubbub got started. One or two stores were open, bread was being delivered, and only a few people were cleaning up from the night before. It's the quiet side of the chaotic old towns.

This is from Essaouira, the coastal town southwest of Casablanca.

For either Battle of Foy, or Operation: Siege. I'd modify it to the standards.

Sidewalk shops and window reflections, San Francisco

Near the end of May I did one of my San Francisco walking street photography trips, heading up to The City on the train and then following a large loop through downtown San Francisco. San Francisco is a great walking city, and I'm able to cover a lot of ground and see a lot of diverse urban landscape on these walks — from the waterfront to business districts to industrial areas.

I saw a lot of interesting and possibly unexpected things in this little street side vignette. Oddly, there are no people in the photograph — more typically I line up an urban landscape like this one and then wait for subject to enter the frame. The colors, of the structures and of the shadow light, caught my attention — primarily we're looking at the greenish awnings and the intense reds found in several places, with everything subject to the blue light of the shadows. And, of course, for this photographer it was frosting on the cake to be able to include the words on the awning in this photograph.

Granville Island art studio/shop. She was dancing in the window to some Enya-esque music. People stopped to look. There was something about the window as a barrier that made the performance seem... I don't know. Otherworldly?
