Step1: Maintain a foot on the bag until you see the ball in the pitcher's hand and the pitcher is on the rubber.
Step2: Establish a primary leadoff. Get as far off third base as the third baseman is from the bag up to a distance of 20 feet. This is your standard leadoff regardless of the quality of the pitchers pick-off move. If the third baseman is 10 feet off third base, leadoff 10 feet.
Step3: Leadoff the base in foul territory. If a batted ball hits a runner in fair territory the runner is out. However, if a runner is hit with a batted ball in foul territory, the runner is not out.
Step4: Face the pitcher with your weight forward on the balls of your feet and knees bent. Ensure your weight is balanced so that you can easily move to your left and to your right.
Step5: Get a secondary leadoff the base when the pitcher throws the pitch to the plate. Shuffle toward home plate with your chest facing the pitcher and eyes watching the ball at home plate.
Step6: Continue your momentum toward home plate until the catcher catches the ball or the ball is hit into play. If the catcher catches the ball, immediately return to third base. If the ball is hit into play or the ball gets away from the catcher listen for instructions from your third base coach.
