Staying Home Covid-19 is here and we all have to stay at home to halt the spread of the virus. We photographers are reduced to taking pictures in the house, so here are a few things of interest.

Frozen Lockdown We are still under isolation conditions, despite the politico posturing, trying to make things that aren't true policy for the future.

No Alpine tunnels here, just the cold blast of reality captured for your edification.

Staying home, grilling some hot dogs

I discovered this relatively basic shirt on the Shein.com website back in May. The shirt was included in a charity sale, proceeds of which were donated to a United Nations fund set up to support the World Health Organization in the fight against the COVID-19 coronavirus.

It was very apropos that this shirt, with its "Let's Stay Home" message, was part of that charity sale. Yes, staying home is the pits. But with the virus still spreading like wildfire here in the U.S., it's the best thing right now. Or at the very least if you must venture out, wear a mask. It's better to take any precaution than to risk the health and lives of you, your loved ones, and total bystanders.

Oh, here I pair this shirt with my trusty PVC leggings and a determined look on my face that says, "Uh, uh, you're going nowhere."

Ohaiyoooo

The time is hard, and some peoples havent a good time , i know it willnot help but maybe i can bring you a little smiley on your face , be careful and stay at home

Love you ♥

In the morning, on 2July 2024, my daughter and I made our first ever visit to the Parkland Peony Farm. People had to buy tickets in order to be able access the glorious display of 850 varieties of Peony. I only heard about this place a year ago, when a friend posted photos, and it was too late to get tickets. So, this year, I was determined to take my daughter there. I was concerned about how much walking there could be. As it turned out, I was unable to see the furthest rows of these amazing blooms, but so thankful that I had at least seen many of the flowers. Too much pain, as well as the heat, and I just had to give up. 'Walking' was of course just a very slow stroll, taking photos. Fresh air and a teeny bit of exercise no doubt did me good, though I felt absolutely tired out by the end.

Right at the start of our visit, arriving a bit early, we looked near the parking area, finding a Black Henbane plant that already had seedpods. I love these pods, though I know it is an invasive species.

Once inside the farm grounds, we heard and saw a KIlldeer. This behaviour told us that there had to be a nest somewhere. We saw both adults in among the Peonies, so my eyes kept checking the soil pathways for any sign. Maybe instead of a nest, they now had young ones to protect. I also saw a rabbit running through the bushes, too fast for me to get a photo.

After leaving the Farm, we called in briefly at the Saskatoon Farm. So many people there, enjoying themselves. My daughter needed to get home and also the weather forecast was for a storm and we wanted to avoid that. Instead, we watched the heavy rain and hail - thankfully, ony small hail! - about five hours later, at home. In no time at all, everywhere turned white. So glad I wasn't driving in such awful weather!

Photo Jumble Following some messages about my antique Lancaster Plate Camera, I decided to load it with a sheet of film to take a photo.

I used old fashioned emulsion with some very old fashioned developer. So, here we are. This is the sort of photo quality people were used to in the early part of the 20th century. I resisted the temptation to sepia tone the finished article.

I got a Christmas meme to do... :P

Wrapping paper or gift bags? Wrapping Paper, of course! It’s so much more fun tearing into a beautifully wrapped gift than pulling something out of a gift bag. :) Maybe it’s the childhood memory or something.

Real tree or Artificial? Real for now, I love the smell. Though I miss the ease and clean up of our artificial.

When do you put up the tree? Haha, depends on when we’re out. This year we thought we were extra clever and bought it on Black Friday – though now our tree looks a little under the weather :|

Do you like eggnog? *gag* sorry, I just threw up a little in my mouth.

Favorite gift received as a child? Hmm, I have no idea. I do however remember that I never got that easy bake oven I wanted for years and years….bitter still, maybe?

Hardest person to buy for? I try and avoid buying for adults at all costs. They’re no fun anyway. :) Unless it’s me!

Easiest person to buy for? The kids, of course!

Do you have a nativity scene? I’m still looking for one I love. :(

Mail or email Christmas cards? Mail – do people actually send email Christmas cards??

Worst gift you ever received? Some kind of bar soap with a holder and a basket with paper towels for the bathroom. Poor gift givers – I love them dearly though.

Favorite Christmas Movie? We always ALWAYS have to watch Christmas Vacation and Elf every year. :)

When do you start shopping? Umm, January. LOL so not kidding.

Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Yes! But only appropriately, if there is thought behind it then I think it’s ok. :)

Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? All those baked yummies.

Lights on the tree? Are you asking if we put lights up? Who doesn’t? We have colored lights for now, I’d love some white ones though. By the time those are “out” again, I’m sure that will be the year I pick some up.

Favorite Christmas song? O' Holy Night, especially when Martina McBride sings it.

Travel at Christmas or stay home? If I never had to leave my house on Christmas day – I would be one happy lady.

Can you name all of Santa's 9 reindeer's? Umm, I thought I could but I’m not sure Donnen and Blitzer are their names….lol

Angel on the tree top or a star? Star, the angel we have is much prettier as decoration elsewhere.

Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Morning – I really don’t understand opening all your gifts on Christmas Eve! Where’s the fun in that??

Most annoying thing about this time of year? trying to find a place for all new gifts and weeding out old things to make room for them all.

Favorite ornament theme or color? I just like anything really different and cute. :)

What do you want for Christmas this year? Umm, if Santa wants to come to my house I have a looooong list of lenses he can bless me with.

i made this long expo picture from our fireplace today.

I made a breakfast for one today. A couple of left over pieces of bacon, soft poached eggs served on rosettes of toast floating in a smoked gouda silky cheese sauce and garnished with spring onions.

On 19 July 2024, the forecast was for yet another HOT day, with the continuing heat dome. It was another day to escape the stifling heat in my home and spend a few hours (turned into 10 hours) enjoying my car's air-conditioning. The day's temperature varied from 32C to 34C. I wasn't sure exactly where I would go, but knew I wanted to check several familiar spots.

Leaving home just before 8:15 am (early for me!), I headed west of Calgary. I was surprised at the lack of Mountain Bluebirds, except for two that were too far away to get even a half-decent photo.

Despite having 124 images of Wilson's Snipe posted in a Flickr album, I also hoped to see one on this drive. No sign of one, but heard, until I returned a short while later to search once more. This time, I was so happy to see a familiar shape on top of a distant fence post. These birds tend to stay put for a while, allowing a few photos to be taken from inside my car. I also saw another Snipe at a different location, this time perched on top of a Bluebird nesting box.

One bird that I had seen from far away on other days, in flight, but had not been able to see one perched on a fence post this year, was the Black Tern. This time, I was finally in luck. Not the sharpest photos, partly because of the heat distortion. The day stayed rather hazy all day, almost blocking out the distant mountains.

I ended up taking a rough, gravel road that was new to me. The wildflowers were beautiful. Took a few photos from inside my car, knowing that if I kept stopping and climbing in and out, my knees would, without doubt, complain even more strongly once I got home. Over the last 18 years, I have taken so many macro shots of wildflowers, so I will enjoy those memories. After driving a long way, I realized that the road was going to suddenly come to an end, which meant a long drive back. Happened to notice a small evergreen tree near the edge of this road, with three or four Christmas baubles still hanging from the branches.

Later in the day, I sat in my car and watched a Swainson's Hawk feeding her two (?) rather helpless young ones. I loved her very brief moment of concern when one of them took a large piece of prey from her beak - she wanted to check that the youngster managed to swallow such a large piece.

One bird that I was really hoping I might see, but have seen quite a few times over the years, was a Ferruginous Hawk - one of my favourite bird species. Suddenly, there it was, perched on a distant power pole, way down the road. I had to drive past it, so stopped to take a few shots and left it in peace.

Closer to home, and SE of the city, I drove three or four roads in one of my 'usual' areas. A few old barns, lots of yellow Canola fields, another Swainson's Hawk, four Alpacas, and a rather attractive young bird that I think might be a juvenile Brown-headed Cowbird, completed my day. By then, I was ready to collapse after 10 hours of driving, but was determined to fill my car with gas ready for a next outing, and I also needed to buy a few groceries. Felt so good to be in a cool supermarket for a while!

Stay home has it benefits.

A sample stanza from "The Fairie Queene" this is what I spent a good part of the year reading off and on. I loved it.
