Bruno: Hey Dave, can you help me out with this book?
Dave: Sure. Never pegged you for much of a reader.
Bruno: Yeah. For some reason the letters always look upside down to me.
Dave: You can't figure that one out?
Bruno: Nope. It's a puzzle wrapped in an enigma. A true mystery of the universe.
Dave: Well, it's a book with simple statements to get people thinking. This one is says to "Imagine Everything that you do NOT know".
Bruno: Why?
Dave: It's designed to keep one humble. There is supposed to be comfort in admitting that there are many things we will never know.
Bruno: Oh. If I get any more comfortable I may fall asleep again.
Dave: That is a danger.
Bruno: Can I tell you something?
Dave: Of course.
Bruno: Well, if I'm supposed to imagine everything that I do not know, we may be here quite a while.

This is from a good little book that I picked up while on vacation. It's called "How to be interesting" by Jessica Hagy. Over 250 pages of venn diagrams, graphs, and simple a few words on how to be true to yourself and truly experience life. I bought it up to have discussions about things with the kids, but this one was too perfect not to share with Bruno as his gift to the world is more from his heart than his brain. And we're all more than fine with that.

I guess judging such a statement will be subjective and we have all grown to appreciate our fish supper cooked in a slightly different manner. Whitby alone is full of excellent fish and chips restaurants, so judging the UK's best would be quite a task. The Magpie Cafe, in Whitby does rightly have a great reputation and has been enhanced through recommendations from various TV chefs like James Martin.
As a building it has stood opposite the quayside since 1750 and was used for a good period of time as a whalers office. Those days are of course long gone and fish and chips have been sold since 1940.
As can be seen this view was taken first thing when the town was empty. Anyone visiting later in the day would expect to see a great queue for both the restaurant and take away. I guess Covid restrictions will mean that bookings are now essential so that a will remove the restaurant queue.
Here 's a link for what I felt were the best fish and chips I have ever tasted. The location may surprise you.

In this photo Margaret C was on a mission. We all need to be on a mission from time to time. With her athleticism she mounted on the 5 ft high cement obstacle with the US Capitol behind her, she turned to look at it, looked back at me and seemed exhilarated. I proposed a rare posed shot, envisioning her representing strength, determination, and the ability to surmount any obstacle. Well, she took if from there and struck the pose and I took the shot. You can surmount your obstacles whatever they may be. Sometimes you have to make a statement! Washington DC, 1 October 2017.

There are just some photographs that need to be in monochrome or black and white. It gives a more powerful statement to the photo and what the photo is depicting. Such as the case here, when Ella came to visit today.

I wanted more detail, more subtle tones and less grain. I also wanted to get rid of the black dots which haunted my Rollei IR400 film. All that has been achieved, so I'm happy.

This is probably one of my very best photos. I do believe there was some serendipity in it, Nevertheless what I really enjoy is seeing the one person in the crowd observing the with a clear eye what the circus film flam man is hawking.
Kinda feel like it’s a statement on the current state of affairs.

From the stage, the auditorium of the Royal Lyceum Theatre presents itself as a confident statement of late-Victorian theatrical ambition. Opened in 1883, the theatre was commissioned by local actor-managers J. B. Howard and F. W. P. Wyndham, whose partnership would later grow into the hugely influential Howard & Wyndham theatrical company. Their intention was clear: to establish a serious home for drama in Edinburgh, matching the city’s intellectual and cultural standing.
Designed by C. J. Phipps, one of the great specialist theatre architects of the period, the Lyceum follows classical principles refined for modern audiences: a horseshoe-shaped auditorium, stacked balconies, and restrained yet opulent decoration. From the stage, the deep red seating, gilded plasterwork, and decorative iron balustrades create a space that feels grand without losing intimacy — a hallmark of Phipps’ work.
The theatre’s name deliberately echoed London’s Theatre Royal Lyceum and English Opera House, closely associated with the legendary Shakespearean actor Henry Irving who performed at the Edinburgh Lyceum’s opening season. Drama remained its primary focus, but the Lyceum also developed a notable operatic history, hosting touring companies in the late 19th century and later playing an important role in the early decades of Scottish Opera. Several major works received their first Scottish performances here, including Madama Butterfly, Manon, and Die Meistersinger.
By the mid-20th century, the building faced an uncertain future, and it was the purchase of the theatre by Edinburgh Corporation in 1965 that saved it from demolition. The acquisition secured the Lyceum as the permanent home of the newly formed Royal Lyceum Theatre Company, transforming it from a vulnerable Victorian relic into a living producing theatre — a role it continues to fulfil today.
The Lyceum has also been a cornerstone of the Edinburgh International Festival since its inception in 1947, regularly welcoming international companies each August and occasionally extending its embrace to Fringe productions. The satirical review ‘Beyond the Fringe’ with Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Alan Bennett and Jonathan Miller premiered here in August 1960. With only limited refurbishments over the decades, the auditorium remains one of the most original and intact examples of Phipps’ theatre design still in use.
And, as with any self-respecting Victorian theatre, the Lyceum has its ghost. Tradition holds that the spirit of Ellen Terry, who performed here during her celebrated career, still lingers — most often sensed from the stage or upper levels, quietly observing proceedings. Whether myth or memory, it adds another layer to a theatre already rich in voices from the past.

Need pants
This is my last remaining pair of business casual pants. The others were all silk and eventually rotted away. I wouldn’t mind except that I think bold socks like these look best with trousers. I’ll be adding pants to my thrift list.
Statement socks like these keep showing up on my Instagram feed. Don’t click on those. Instead, buy them on Amazon for less than $3 each.
