I will begin (slowly) to post a series of photos taken at Seattle's Fremont Solstice Parade (the most liberating and most fun parade in the world) and Fremont Fair, starting with the statement here I saw posted in a car.
"Seattle Art Car Blowout" is the 3rd largest art car show in the US.
This is now my new personal statement.
"Mission Statement for a (Photo) Project: Having a child is hard. Not only in the pure, physical responsibility, but also psychologically. Axioms and basic truths premised upon experience are upended in an instant. All of life is reopened for questioning, for re-exploration, and its suddenness is breathtaking in its brutality.
And as you are breaking down and rebuilding, so the familiar around you mutates into something new. What was large is now small, closed, constricted. And what was open and free is now daunting and threatening and filled with danger and potential menace at worst, inconvenience at best.
This is not about claustrophobia or agoraphobia per-se. This is rather concerned with the fluidity of my own interpretation of familiar spaces - of my life - when assaulted from outside by this new permanent resident within it."
I began this abandoned project following the birth of my daughter in 2011. The above was my mission statement to come to terms with what, at the time, was so overwhelming. I rediscovered it today following a visit to The Photographers' Gallery's exhibition "Home Truths" concerning women's sense of identity following birth. I was trying to do the same thing from a father's perspective...

OFFICER'S QUARTERS (LOG)
This log and frame officer's quarters was among the first buildings constructed at Fort Bridger in 1858. The log section of this cabin measures 41' x 33' with the rear addition of frame construction measuring 22.5' x 22'. It stood first in a row of six such cabins for officers and their families. Now it and the 1884 Commanding Officer's Quarters at the end of the boardwalk are the only buildings that remain along 'Officer's Row'.
In the frontier army, a newly-arrived officer could evict and assume the quarters of a man directly beneath him - a process known as 'ranking-out', dreaded by officer's wives. It often started a chain reaction that left the youngest second lieutenant pitching a tent for himself and his wife.
By the late 1880's the building served as a bachelor officer's quarters and has been refurnished to show the contrasting lifestyles of an older captain and a young first lieutenant. Divided by a hallway, each officer has a private bedroom and parlor. They share a dining room and kitchen, which is usually the working area of a maid who is provided a small room next to the kitchen for her sleeping quarters.
After the turn of the century the rest of the log officer's quarters, and many other wooden buildings were sold at public auction and carted off to become parts of local ranges and homesteads. This building was occupied and remained a private residence until the 1930's and, consequently, was left at Fort Bridger.

I became an aunt for the 3rd time on January 13, 1998. Arianna Marie Gomez was healthy and adorable, the product of my half-brother, Henry and his second wife, Sandy’s marriage. For the first few years of her life, we were lucky enough to see “Ari” regularly. The unfortunate dissolution of Henry and Sandy’s marriage would change that.
As time passed I would wonder about Ari. How was she handling the divorce? Did she ever see her dad? What were her favorite subjects in school? Did she ever think about me?
Thanks to the magic of Facebook, I was able to re-connect with Ari. On my computer screen I saw a hint of that child I knew now in the body of a woman. In her posts she talked about school, her friends and music from people I had never heard of, all in a language I wasn’t quite sure was English. Who was this stranger? With that question in mind, I made my way up to Sacramento.
What I hoped to capture in my three short visits were a collection of images that would define who Ari is now. Instead they revealed who Ari is to ME now. In Spanish, the word for aunt is “tia”. As a sign of respect, I call all my aunts and uncles “tia” or “tio”. Ari is a girl who knows I’m her aunt but doesn’t call me “tia”. This distance made her extremely shy and self-conscious; the complete opposite of the sassy profile pictures I saw online.
My hope is to continue this project into the future and, in turn, continue to develop our relationship. These images serve as an introduction for the audience and a re-introduction for me.

Sierra College 23rd Annual Juried Student Exhibition

Juror’s Statement:
“The Ridley Gallery at Sierra College has over two decades of being a visual arts and cultural hub in Rocklin, CA. It was an honor to be invited to jury their Gallery’s 23rd Annual Juried Student Exhibition, not only because of its significance to the regional art community and its history of exhibiting high caliber international and regional artists but also because I was once a community college student who directly benefited from student exhibitions and the guidance of the faculty who run them. Juried exhibitions and college art galleries presented me with an opportunity to gain experience exhibiting artwork, to find my peers who were also striving for a life in the arts, and to gain confidence and critical thought about my work through being exposed to contemporary art.
Last year, students across the world were faced with an extreme shift in their learning environment, many lost the resources, community, and safe spaces that schools, and especially art classrooms, provide for us. I admire the creativity, commitment, and achievement of all the students who submitted artwork, and the fact that the Ridley Gallery adapted their curatorial practices to continue creating a space, albeit virtual, to welcome their student’s work.
This exhibition showcased a strong move toward new media. Much of the work challenged the categories that we are used to, including artwork that fit the traditional gallery space and a more widespread viewing experience of visual media structured through internet culture. Some works reinforced the importance of traditional media like painting, drawing, and ceramics, to interpret introspective and personal spaces in a time of isolation, struggle, and healing.
I was impressed by the quality of work, the range in media, themes, and experimentation of the submissions. Many works showed concerns for the current events that our country is facing like the pandemic, race inequality, and wellness, and they did so with care and originality. Black Live Matters Tribute (2020) is an honest and potent view on being Black with powerful spoken word poetry and graphics, Lost Connections (2020) by Michael Caspi and Science or Magic by Kevin Belcastro (2020) focus on narrative, and in the case of Belcastro, a humorous and imaginative perspective. I admired the technical skill in digital paintings from Sheryl Rivera and Christina Becher, the strong personal symbolism in Kristol Lopez’ Daughter of Buffalo Haired Woman (2019), the mystery and visual poetry of Kimberly Tagye in Train from Berlin (2019), and Michael Quinn’s Orion and Joshua (2020). These were just a few of many artworks that I viewed with enthusiasm, curiosity, and delight, but many more showcase a promising future in the field and dominance over media. The artists included in this exhibition represent the genuine diversity of backgrounds and skills that Sierra College nurtures, and the timely and highly creative interpretation of our current society’s struggle, vision, and adaptability.” - Aida Lizalde
