Looming over a sleeping man like an all-too real specter from a nightmare, the rat in Mann and Maus inspires many interpretations. Although the delicate figure is seemingly crushed under the giant rodent, the man appears to slumber soundly. Fritsch is representative of a new generation of German artists who emerged in the 1980s and ‘90s deeply distrustful of dominant social and historic narratives and breaking from the art movements that preceded them. Fritsch wields her dark strand of irony as a tool for critical commentary.

Big Sur's Limekiln State Park, located two miles south of Lucia on Highway One, is the southernmost state park in Monterey County. The park is located in the steepest coastal canyon in the continental United States and holds some of Monterey County's oldest redwood groves.

Debbie W and I headed to Salem for the day to take in the Oregon State Fair for the first time. I especially wanted to go because of all the Oregon Sesquicentennial cakes, etc. We didn't take the chair in the air to see the whole fair or eat a brick of fries. But we did get ripped off on soft-serve (not knowing about the Red Barn), we saw baby goat show, woman's roller derby for the first time, tons of art, and our favorite find was the $1 sideshow with Mack & Zack!
