1984 Nissan Stanza 1.6 GL Jubilee Luxe 4-door.

Supplied by Park Motors of Ormskirk (Datsun/Nissan).

Looked immaculate, wish all old cars looked this good.

This fresco depicts the coronation of Charlemagne (Charles the Great) as the first 'Imperator Romanorum' ('Holy Roman Emperor') by Pope Leo III in 800 AD. The coronation was held inside Old St. Peter's Basilica on Christmas night.

The fresco was painted around the time of the concordat between the Papacy and France in 1515. The features of the current pontiff and king, Pope Leo X and Francis I, have been used for Leo III and Charlemagne in the painting.

Imported from North America and then registered in 1998.

This car has been scrapped after June 2015. So I was right on time recording this 80s car, which has become rare in our streets nowadays.

Posting last year finds I noticed that a lot of 80s cars have been scrapped meanwhile. This category of cars form a very vulnerable group of cars: to old to compete with current cars, to young to be considered as classic cars. Therefore they suffer by the lack of protection they deserve. They're depending on the goodness of the individual car enthusiast.

This Prairie M10-Series was introduced in Japan in 1981 and in Europe one year later. It was one of the very first compact MPV's. Naganori Ito was the designer.

In the US it was called Stanza Wagon.

Note the attractive sliding door, which is on both sides.

... a closer look.

While the title designated the 'Holy Roman Emperor' as the legal successor of the Roman Empire, it was in practice one of honour and prestige. The 'Holy Roman Emperor' was considered primus inter pares (first among equals) among all of Europe's Roman Catholic rulers.

A view of the frescoes on the Cardinal and Theological Virtues on the lunette and ceiling.

The Cardinal Virtues are represented here by women; three are on the lunette over the window: Fortitude, Prudence and Temperance. A fourth Cardinal Virtue, Justice, is represented by the woman holding a sword and scales within the round medallion directly above the lunette. The Theological Virtues: Charity, Hope and Faith are represented by cherubs (putti) in the lunette.

Fortitude is the woman (on the left) wearing armor with a lion in her lap. The cherub with her represents Charity.

'Prudence' is the woman at centre looking into a mirror; symbolizing the need for awareness of both the present and the past in making decisions for the future. The cherub here holding a torch flame represents 'Hope'.

'Temperance' is on the right; she holds a horse bridle symbolizing restraint. The winged cherub pointing up to Heaven is 'Faith'.

A fourth Cardinal Virtue, 'Justice', is directly above the fresco; within the round medallion. She is a female figure holding scales and a sword. Its greater prominence is because Justice is needed to bring balance to the other Virtues.

The two other panels on the ceiling above here are the ‘Judgement of Solomon ‘and ‘Original Sin’, both quite beautifully done.

I swapped the Sigma for a lovely blue Stanza saloon which I'm going to try and tidy up a little.

... in a rectangular 'medallion' on the ceiling in the Room of the Segnatura by Raphael. It is between the 'Justice' and 'Theology' medallions.

Sometimes called the 'Fall of Adam and Eve', the figures here include Adam & Eve, the Tree of Knowledge and a Serpent (with the torso and head of a woman). Raphael has managed to convey a more ‘knowing” look in the figure of Eve, who has already eaten the fruit of knowledge, and contrasts this with the relative relaxed innocence and trust expressed in the figure of Adam.

The gold background here are of mosaic tiles.

... a look at the figures at lower left of the 'Crowning of Charlemagne' fresco. They appear to be bearing gifts for the coronation.

A closer look at the "Battle of Ostia". The naval battle is depicted in considerable detail.

The fresco is believed to have been designed by Raphael, but was likely painted by assistants from the artist's workshop.

... a closer look at the Mass at Bolsena fresco in the Stanza di Eliodoro; by Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, known as Raphael, circa 1512-1514.

On the lower right of the fresco, Raphael has included a self-portrait of himself with a group of the Swiss Guards; he is the one who looks right back at us.

... on the "School of Athens" fresco.

Diogenes (412-323 BC) was a Greek philosopher and an early pioneer of Cynic philosophy. He was a controversial figure and both espoused and followed the Cynic ideal of living a simple basic life of natural virtue, free from all unnecessary possessions. He was said to have lived almost like a beggar, sleeping and eating wherever he chose; he committed obscene acts in public.

Diogenes courted controversy and had open disputes with the great men of his day; mocking Alexander the Great in public and criticizing Plato and even disrupted his lectures. Raphael's depiction reflects this; he is poorly dressed and is set apart and isolated from the other figures.

With a bodykit fitted? I'm not sure this would have been a Nissan UK press car, as the registration isn't from the area they're usually registered in. Maybe a dealer-supplied vehicle? Unlike one Nissan's own PR photos, at least the wheel centrecaps have been fitted correctly...

DVLA says it came off the road in 2000.

A varied range of cars parked-up, with the 205 being the most modern. The Allegro looks to be a Series 3 model and I think the orange saloon is a Cavalier (although the number plate relocation due to the towbar did make me think it was an Ascona). Next along is a Renault 20 or 30, dwarfing the Fiat 126. Fiesta looks like it would have been a GL or Ghia, and then there's the one that most interests me. It's a Datsun Stanza 3-door, now ultra rare. I think the maroon saloon on the right is a Triumph Acclaim.

Oh, how I've been looking for one of these 4d Stanzas! It took me 5 years of car spotting before I finally found one!

Seems to be in rahter nice condition but most likely just a daily driver to someone.

Stanza della Segnatura, Musei Vaticani (Room of the Signature, Vatican Museums)
