Taken at the Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary, Mysore.
As a photographer, one place you would feel humbled is a bird sanctuary.... for not only is bird photography insanely difficult unless you have a really fast lens with good zoom but also you will see that most of the times your compositions go for a toss. Add to it the pain of focusing on a rapidly moving object ... not my cup of tea :)
Considering I am too lazy to remember / identify the bird, anyone care to name the species?
Dogwoods standout against the flowing Merced river.
I was in the Yosemite valley couple of weekends back. Although I had initially thought that the dogwood season was way past the peak bloom, I was surprised to find out that there still were lots of trees with full blooming dogwoods. Areas around curry village in particular had lots of trees fully draped with dogwoods. It looked like a fresh snow storm had dusted those trees.
The weather during my two days there was more than perfect for photographing dogwoods. It was part cloudy part sunny with periods in between which cast beautiful diffused light onto the dogwoods. In bright sunlight the dogwoods and the surrounding forest are to contrasty and it looks like a huge white mess. In the shade and when the sun is blocked by clouds, the dogwoods now have a chance to shine against the darker foliage.
In the shot above, the dogwoods are sort of backlit and they stand out against the blurred flowing river. With the shutter speed a little too fast, the background looks a little too messy and the dogwoods are lost in the mess. With an extreme slow shutter speed, the background is too smooth and lacks texture. I had to experiment with different shutter speeds to get the right balance.
This shot looks good both in color in BW and I have a color version with a little different composition which I will share at a later date. For now do enjoy this BW.

I drove past these pots for years. They belonged to a nursery. Then one day the hothouses were struck down, nursery ploughed over and pots loaded up and taken away. Not sure if the nursery sold up to a farm or they just found strawberry business to be more lucrative. I'm glad though that one day I got out of the car and took some shots of the patterns made by the thousands of stacked pots.
It was a gray and rainy day and I did not hold out much hope for good pictures. However, the gray was a perfect background for the stunning uniforms of the Royal 22e Régiment's changing of the guard ceremony which is held daily in the summer at the Citadelle in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.

Piedra River Trail, Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Snow had fallen a week earlier, melt and refilled the languishing river. Indeed, the Southwest US is back in severe drought (as if we'd really left it).

By lightening the shadows a little more in this photograph it took away the shadows underneath the catapillar. In lightening the shadows it also brightened up the whole image even more. This cooled down the stones on the ground making the catapillar to standout even more, too.
I cooled this one down on the temp slider to give a more natural look. Notice what this does to the catapillar, it really stands out because by cooling the photograph it really brought out the true colors of the stones. Making a great contrast in this photograph.
I like this catapillar photograph the second best of the four posted here.
What's really cool is that you can change all the colors individually and slide them back-and-forth untill you're satisfied with the colors in the photograph. You can change the white balance and the temp, the tones and so much more all within Adobe Lightroom 1.1.
I can make the green in this catapillar darker or lighter depending on what I remember the seen had looked like in reality. Or I can make it whatever I feel like I want the colors to be in any given photograph.

I could've of made anyone of these colors brighter or darker. I chose to leave the rocks a little more orange than of the original. It would probably even look better if I made the rocks less orange to cause the catapillar to standout more than it already does. This would most likely cause the orange bumps to really pop out at you even more than you see here.

Standouts for me were both Goose Island beers, The Nightstalker and Imperial Coffee Stout. The Nightstalker is their imperial stout before it's aged in bourbon barrels resulting in their infamous Bourbon County Brand Stout.

Handheld outside on Tilghman Island, Maryland on a rainy and windy day as Tropical Storm Andrea dumped five inches of rain on the area. Focusing on the bloom made the emerging buds behind it look like tiny planets floating in a galaxy of black.
I like the simple metallic, graphic details on so many of these old airplanes in the hangar but not much rust here! We were ahead of even the NY Times on this one! www.nytimes.com/2009/07/10/arts/10explorer.html?emc=eta1

Granny Squares are a Crochet staple and can be used for so many projects, although blankets are my favorite. I have seen many fabulous purses, amigurumi , pillows, scarves, and even lamp shade covers! They are so versatile and can add such detail to a project.
