The sunshine yellow Carriage House at the Jay Heritage Center was the perfect backdrop for Earth Day activities on April 19th. Kids made bird feeders with pine cones, caterpillar art out of recycled egg cartons and took home small planters of grass to watch seeds germinate at home. The event was another standout led by Jay Heritage Center volunteers like Caroline Wallach, Emma Hanratty, Elisabeth Casey, Keelin Pye and Cathy Rosenstock, Annie Teillon,
Caitlin Layng, Meghann Kelly, Lauren Spelman, Jennifer Coleman and more Rye members of the Young Preservationists who are making history fresh and fun for our community. Next events coming up - our spring luncheon, a bluegrass concert, and Jay Day!

Landscape lovers travelled to the old silver mining town of Aspen, Colorado this past June 23rd to join The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) for an unparalled series of private garden visits curated by
TCLF Co-Chair Kurt Culbertson, President of Design Workshop. The 2012 Aspen Garden Excursion, featured no less than 6 award-winning residential designs, all incorporating sustainable features ranging from water conservation to native plant choices responsive to the climate and ecology of the area. The sites were all breathtaking, and participants took in dramatic views from a preserve overlook to a streamside estate, from a contemporary mountain garden to a cascade garden. As one of the highlights, Kurt arranged for Jeff Berkus, architect of The Aspen Institute’s Doerr-Hosier Center, to lead a tour through the grounds which include Herbert Bayer’s striking 1955 Marble Garden and environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy’s red sandstone installation “Stone River.” Our group travelled from McLain Flats to Red Mountain and saw a great breadth of topography and creative treatments while also learning about the agricultural history and rich heritage of Aspen and its environs. The day was a great success.

UPDATE-- 12/2/12 This one has is off to North Carolina. Everything always finds it way to right place, and Mira & family were really determined to nab this one. The reward? You now have even more Milo B. Bravo.
Perhaps the standout pair of loans for Hull Fair services this year, which encouraged me well and truly not to miss out this year, were two 'Gold'-branded Enviro400 MMCs, one from the East and West divisions respectively. The East Midlands, of course, isn't Gold country. I wonder why? Do we have an abundance of branded services already? Our last 'proper' Gold buses came in 2019 to cover for buses on loan for the long-departed Lincoln Christmas Market, so let's just say I was positively itching to go catch them... or, at least, one of them.
However, with Saturday no longer an option for... well, the rugby, here's where my plans for today started to fall apart. See, I was thinking this year I might start out at Humber Bridge to catch the first buses heading out while it was still daylight. Unfortunately, I arrived a bit too early, meaning the buses were bunched too close together, and there was nowhere sensible to park without having to pay up. It just so happened, also, that all the out-of-county loanees were allocated here. So... yeah, given the circumstances, this was the best I could do. Ah man.
Somehow the best service shot I could get of one of the two loaned Golds, given the circumstances, Stagecoach West's 10902, a 2017 ADL Enviro400 MMC numerically up from the previous InterConnect (but not by registration!) and originally branded, quite fittingly, for Cheltenham's Park & Ride 93, is seen on loan to Hull and heading up the leafy concubines of Ferriby Road on its first Park & Ride 22 of the night. Interesting to note that this coming from Cheltenham, this is the furthest south a bus has travelled from to be on loan for Hull Fair duties.

Millennium Bridge, Thames Embankment, London Oct 22, 2012 England. We had to wait for about 30 mins until the Millennium bridge was open again after some repairs. Day two of our stay in London. The weather wasn't kind to us!
In 1996, the Financial Times held an international competition in conjunction with the London Borough of Southwark and the Royal Institute of British Architects to design a new footbridge crossing the Thames between Southwark and Blackfriars bridges.
It would be the first pedestrian river crossing over the Thames in central London for more than a century, opening in time for the first year of the new Millennium.
It is a 325m steel bridge linking the City of London at St. Paul's Cathedral with the Tate Modern Gallery at Bankside.
Although the Millennium Bridge, like all bridges, was designed to cope with a degree of movement it soon became clear that things were going seriously awry as the deck swayed about like a drunken sailor.
Elderly walkers clung on to the side of the bridge. People reported feeling seasick. The swaying bridge was looking like an expensive fairground ride.
So the bridge was instantly renamed as 'The Wobbly Bridge', and after two days of random swaying, swinging and oscillating wildly, the bridge was closed down by embarrassed engineers.
After a prolonged series of tests, it was decided to adopt passive damping system which would harness the movements of the structure to absorb energy.
After nearly two years of testing, the alterations were deemed a success and the bridge finally reopened to the public in February 2002 - and the swaying was banished forever!

Former amateur standout, Gary “Mr.” Russell Jr. (20W-0-12KO’s) put on yet another remarkable performance as he went on to destroy tough Mexican pugilist, Christopher Perez (23W-3L-14KO’s) in just three rounds. After a very cautious first round, the speed and power of Russell would prove to be the difference. A beautiful left-right combination would send Perez sprawling to the canvas at the end of the second round. Although Perez arose to beat the count and survive the second round, it seemed only a matter of time before Russell put an abrupt end to things. The third round began with Perez being dropped immediately by a devastating left hand. Russell would drop Perez twice more with concussive combinations en route to another tremendous victory. Veteran referee Pat Russell would end the action at 1:41 of the third to save Perez from any more unnecessary punishment.

The Pictured Rocks tower 50 to 200 feet above Lake Superior at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. These colorful sandstone cliffs stretch for about 15 miles along the lake. The name "Pictured Rocks" comes from the streaks of mineral stain that decorate the face of the weather-sculpted cliffs. Print Size 13x19 inches.
