At a time when the electric guitar was beginning to reach out to players, the prices were out of reach for most. Some inventive souls were prompted to build their own instruments in order to save a bit of money or to create an instrument better suited to their needs. A few of these industrious folks built additional instruments for friends while others made a business of it. Paul Tutmark was one of the very few that were able to thrive by producing unique, high-quality, inventive instruments. He is credited with having built the first fretted electric solid body bass, already available in 1936.
This Duo 336, the only complete and original example known today, is one of Tutmark’s innovations that have mostly gone unnoticed. At first glance it is not a standout design, but in 1936-37 it was a real invention. The two 7-string necks differ in “scale,” i.e., the string length from the nut to the bridge. This allows for different tunings, and accommodates the limited string gauges available at the time. The pickups look like cousins to the Dobro patented humbucking design, introduced in late 1933. For reasons not fully understood, the pickups hidden beneath the metal cover employ magnets of two sizes, neither of which are the standard size found in other AudioVox instruments. The short neck has a magnet that is much smaller than in a normal pickup, while the long scale neck has a much larger magnet. When played, the sound generated from the two necks differs in volume. This suggests that the builder might have had a specific use for this instrument in mind.

This incredibly yellow coloured golden coin turtle is a standout in the wonderful Reptiles display
Cuora trifasciata is a species of turtle native to Southeast Asia, known in English as the Golden Coin Turtle or Three-striped/banded/lined Box Turtle.
The species is distributed in China (southern, Hainan and Hong Kong), populations from Lao People's Democratic Republic and Vietnam are now regarded as an own species, Cuora cyclornata (BLANCK et al. 2006). In Hong Kong, the species is found in Tai Tam Reservoir area on Hong Kong Island.
It hybridizes vigorously with its relatives in captivity and in the wild, and hybrids may be fertile. Several of these have been described as new species, such as the Fujian Pond Turtle. This seems to be a hybrid between (usually) males of this species females of the Asian Yellow Pond Turtle. In addition, the Golden Coin Turtle is suspected to be a parent of the supposed species Chinese False-eyed Turtle and Philippen's Striped Turtle.

I was listening to a photography podcast today where they were answering questions about how to isolate a person in a crowd. Besides using DOF, tilt shift lenses, one suggestion was, if you had control of the person, dress them in red. Well, I had no control over this, but yellow works well also, ay? (Especially when a matching cab passes by).

I've mentioned 'standouts' to a couple of people and they have no idea what I'm talking about (much like I didn't before someone showed me!).
Last week I ordered some photos (some mine and some from friends) so we could finally get some artwork up on our walls. Mostly I just ordered prints but I also ordered a couple of large standouts from WHCC - a 20 x 30 and a 16 x 24. I thought I would show you how they turned out and a side/back view of one so you could get a better idea of what they are like. See notes.
I got a bunch more prints and will take a shot of some of those later. :-)
