Today was the annual Springfield Christmas Parade. I hadn't been to one since I was a kid, so it was a special treat to see one after all these years. Despite the cold, it was a good time.

www.urbanjacksonville.info/2007/10/17/podcast-episode-13-... In this episode I talk with Phillip Ramsey and Jennifer McCharen about the Springfield community garden. The garden is located on Main Street in the raised lot north of The Pearl.
We talk about how the garden got started, plans for the garden and Jacksonville in general. Eventually Phillip and Jennifer hope to provide space for the community to grow their own food and possibly provide food for their neighbors and the surrounding downtown community.

This picture was taken by the Springfield Preservation Trust back in June 1983. They went through the neighborhood recording structures that were of historical significance. Here is the link which has a lot more info about this house & many others. Just click on the PDF icon once you get there.

Another "just snap" kind of shot. Got out of the car, about to walk into the building..looked up ..saw the moon appeared just between the branches, so I just took the shot.
Here is downtown Springfield, Kentucky, seat of Washington County with a population of 2,846. I've only ever been to Springfield once before in about 1992 or '93, and I don't really remember it. I remember the courthouse, but that's it.
Springfield is one of those places that make a claim to being the home of Abraham Lincoln's parents. Abe's father, Thomas, lived on a homestead his parents started just northwest of town in the 1790s, and Nancy Hanks got a job as a seamstress for a family a few cabins over. The two met and courted at what is now a state park I should have visited, but they took off for other places as soon as they married.
In more recent history, this is where former NFL quarterback and current TV announcer Phil Simms was born. I don't like football, but Phil Simms took the Giants to the Superbowl when I was 15, and that was kind of a big deal with people in Central Kentucky at the time, so I remember Phil Simms.
Public Square was platted in 1823, and it remains the heart of the City of Springfield. The Old State Capitol, along with the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices and numerous other historic buildings surround the square.
Downtown Springfield is on the National Register of Historic Places #78001187, #86003184, and #15000316.
