The Illinois Governor's Mansion is the official residence of the governor of Illinois. It is located in the state capital, Springfield, Illinois. The Italianate-style Mansion was designed by Chicago architect John M. Van Osdel with a modified 'H' shaped configuration with a long central section, and the front and back on the sides of the 'H'. The 16-room manor was completed in 1855 and was first occupied by governor Joel Matteson, who held the official grand opening on January 10, 1856. It is one of the oldest historic residences in the state of Illinois and one of the three oldest continuously occupied governor's mansions in the United States. In 1898 alterations to the exterior added neoclassical elements. In 1972, the Illinois Governor's Mansion Association was founded as a charitable corporation to assist in the maintenance and programming at the mansion. The Mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

We drove on Old Route 66 in Springfield Illinois. We looked at the Capital as we drove by since there was not a parking space for an RV to be found.

Springfield Plantation-Gaines' Mill Battlefield unit of the Richmond National Battlefield Park-- In 1862 this farmhouse was home to the widow Sarah Watt, her granddaughter, Mary Jane Haw, and a maid. It was a typical Hanover County plantation of several hundred acres with some 28 slaves who produced a modest income from grains, potatoes, and livestock. Around the house stood a kitchen, slave quarters, and other outbuildings. A series of roads, now abandoned, connected the Watt family to their neighbors and Richmond.
Their lives drastically changed on the morning of June 27, 1862. The Union commander selected the house for his temporary headquarters, forcing the family to leave. When Mary Jane returned after the battle, she found “the walls and roof were torn by shot and shell, the weatherboarding honeycombed by minie balls, and every pane of glass shattered.” Inside, evidence of a field hospital was everywhere. “Now, from garret to cellar,” she wrote, “there was scarcely a space of flooring as large as a man’s hand that did not bear the dark purple stain of blood.”

Built in 1882 and renovated in the 1930s to its present Art Deco-style appearance, this building was formerly the home of a Kresge Department Store location. The building features a buff brick exterior, decorative spandrel panels, limestone trim, geometric motifs, including ziggurat-shaped brick panels over the third-floor windows, one-over-one double-hung windows, decorative piers, and a heavily modified first floor facade. The building is a contributing structure in the Central Springfield Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, and expanded to its present size in 2016.

Built in 1919 as a Classical Revival-style building and covered with a Modern International-style facade in 1978, this building features concrete panel-clad piers between the glass curtain walls, decorative ribbed metal panels, and large bays at the ground floor containing windows and recessed entrance doors. The building is a noncontributing structure in the Central Springfield Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, and expanded to its present size in 2016.

I was lucky enough to be invited to a private railway in the Midlands. It was also a great opportunity to catch up with Lawrie so we met at the railway. The owner foolishly said, what would you like to see... We compromised on everything but kick us out when we become a pain.

What a fabulous atmosphere - the locos are well-cared for but still have that industrial feel and they have a real job to do - horsefeed and supplies in: by-products out. As you can see there are a variety of realistic trains available to use and not a passenger carriage or steam loco to be seen. It took me right back to my visits to German Peatworks, especially with the Diema in the weeds.

Built in 1973, this Modern New Formalist building features a concrete panel-clad exterior, projected bays with windows on the narrow sides that are perpendicular to the street, increasing privacy while still allowing for natural light inside the building, a semi-circular portico at the semi-circular entrance, which features a glass curtain wall at the rear, and a lobby with a decorative abstract geometric mural on the wall above the entrance. The building is a noncontributing structure in the Central Springfield Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, and expanded to its present size in 2016.
