Spring has arrived in Northern California. Patches of California Poppies are starting to sprout to life all over. In Niles Canyon, poppies are starting to line the original transcontinental railroad line into the Bay Area. Some train crews were known to once throw poppy and wildflower seeds along the right of way from their trains, producing beautiful patches of flowers along the right of way. There is no shortage of poppies along this line, now owned by the Niles Canyon Railway. And, just like the poppies, spring brings back steam train excursions on this line. On the first day of March, Skookum, a 2-4-4-2 steam engine on loan from the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad, pulls into Sunol, past the classic semaphore railroad signals, and the blooming poppies. A trip on the Niles Canyon Railway is highly recommended!

It's raining and cold here today.. Wind has been ripping off all the petals from the trees and bushes and I'm glad I got a few shots at the beginning so that I can enjoy looking at them now.. ;)
