Minnehaha Falls
Falls Branch
Chattahoochee National Forest
Georgia
Of all the falls I visited in northern Georgia the one I wish I had gotten more time to spend with was Minnehaha Falls. Upon our arrival to the falls trailhead, sunset was quickly approaching and though the hike to the waterfall was 0.2, I knew I needed to hurry, complicating matters I had been dealing with some sharp pain in my left knee over the last few weeks. Did I care? No. I fully ignored it, power hiking to the falls. Once I ascended up the final leg of the trail and got to see this beauty in all it’s glory I just stood there staring at it. Wow! At 55 ft tall, this cascading waterfall emerges from the rhododendrons above, then spreads out over the rock before resting in a shallow wide splash pool at the base! Once I got refocused I only got a few shots off before it got too dark to shoot. I know one thing for sure, I'll certainly be back for some quality time!
I had visited this location about a year and a half ago and forgot how pretty this place was.
The stream below the splash pool diverts into five seperate little sections. This is one of them.
The area has a lot of shooting possibilities and I certainly am glad I made the trip up.
I had spent the early part of the morning shooting with Darren White and Lil m and I must say it was a blast. Darren was even visited by a local couger....that may not have been a blast!!
Thanks for a great morning guys!!
Little m it was so nice to finally meet you. Let's do it again.

We spent a ridiculous amount of time at this falls, 3 hrs in fact, and I think if it weren't for the fact we ready to gnaw our arms off in hunger we probably would have stayed even longer. When good friends Jason Haley, Bryan Janosick, Randy Sanger, new friend Sarah Hampton and myself arrived around 2:30 the sun was directly hitting the falls and the splash pool. There are several different perspectives of this falls and all of us took up different positions and began shooting. Some time later we were joined by new friend Todd Williams. About the time myself, Jason and Bryan had Camp Creeked ourselves out, Randy suggested we wait for about 15 more minutes because the sun was going to be off the falls. Well, that 15 minutes turned out to be 1 more hour as the sunlight hitting the trees behind the falls illuminated their vibrant color in the splash pool. All of us became caught up in this beautiful display of nature, which made it hard to leave but unfortunately the longing for steaks, pork loin and sandwiches had won out.
Paws In The Park 2008 got off to a flying start today, with a practice day in the Dash 'n' Splash pool. All the regular high flyers were there - Rupert, Cody and Dash - along with a host of other potential stars - including Jasper, pictured above! Action continues tomorrow and Sunday - read more about Paws In The Park at www.pawsinthepark.net/. See more images like this at www.momofoto.co.uk

This waterfall is located 20 minutes out from Tauranga and is a series of lovely cascades all the way to this deep cool splash pool. at the right conditions you could spend hours here with the cascades above too but we were visiting with the kids in bright sunshine so limited our photography time to a few shots each. This is Marianne's version.

This past weekend Lisa and I ran down to Oneida, Tennessee for a quick overnight trip so I could attend the Big South Fork National River And Recreation Area Photography Contest Award Ceremony at the Bandy Creek Visitor Center. I had been notified I was a finalist and to my amazement I was awarded first place in Kentucky Landscapes for my photograph of Split Bow Arch. It was great to meet and chat with some nice folks who enjoyed both my photography page and the Kentucky Waterfalls, Arches and Landscapes group. Since Hurricane Harvey was making it's way through the area, the following morning we made the 30 minute drive to the Coditz Cove State Natural Area for a hike to Northrup Falls. I have been to the falls twice, once in 2009 when I had just begun my interest in shooting waterfalls and the second time was in 2012 when it was completely dry. For years I've wanted to return to shoot Northrup because I didn't like those early shots I had taken of it. Upon our arrival on this latest trip we were greeted by a pack of super friendly pups, loaded with pup kisses, pup hugs and quite a bit of pee. I remembered the hike to not be very long and fairly easy. When we arrived to the confluence with the loop trail, with the pups in tow, I could see the falls in the gorge below and it was flowing perfectly. Though chilly, it was ultra humid. Beams of light were passing through the hemlock forest illuminating the morning mist. As we made our way into the gorge the trail became a bit more difficult and eventually the approach to the falls base the trail became far too difficult for Lisa to manage. I felt really bad because I wanted her to enjoy the beauty of the falls, but she insisted I go on without her, so I quickly made the scramble up the roots and the rock and made my way to the falls. As I walked behind the falls one of the pups ran down to the splash pool and laid down in it, tongue out and completely content. It was adorable. I didn't spend much time here, I didn't like her sitting there by herself, so I took a handful of compositions and quickly made my way back to her. I'm not sure if I'll ever get the chance to come back, the park is really out of the way when visiting the Big South Fork, but if I don't I'll now be satisfied with the shots I took.
Excited children at the elementary school this morning when this one landed. I crew on a balloon and must say this pilot did an excellent job landing here considering the wires, trees and splash pool.
If your ever in the Snake River Valley traveling by Twin Falls Idaho, you owe it to yourself to stop in and see the "Niagara Of The West"
Shoshone Falls is an amazing place and there you will see the entire Snake River tumbling over the huge cliffs to the massive splash pool below.
Please enjoy the view. :-)

Unnamed Falls
Laurel Creek
Tributary Of The Gauley River
Gauley River National Recreation Area
West Virginia
On a recent trip to the New River Gorge area of West Virginia we decided to head over to the Gauley River National Recreation Area to hit some of its tributaries since that area had more recent rain than everywhere else. My good friend Randy Sanger described the trek to the bottom of this unnamed falls as “a mad scramble.” Unbeknownst to me, while I was shooting from above everyone went on and made their way down. Another good friend, Jason Haley stayed behind and showed me the way everyone took and boy was it a doosy, about a 100 ft. scramble down loose rock, dirt and around boulders, and although I’m normally pretty skittish about these kinds of things this one looked doable. After one hang up I reached the bottom and hiked upstream to meet everyone. When I arrived there were several leaves swirling in the splash pool and it looked really cool. As I was getting ready to set up Randy walked to the base of the falls and pulled out a 6 x 2 that was hung up in the rocks and what followed next was incredible as the newly unblocked water created an unbelievable amount of bubbles and foam that spread out over the splash pool creating the scene which you see here.

This is one of the appetizers on the way back to the Main Course (Van Hook Falls). This may be my favorite of the five waterfalls you pass along the trail. There are normally several compositions for this one, but when I was last here, heavy rains had gotten the creeks way up and some of the other comps were not really possible. Take a look at all that winter lushness. And that splash pool= if it had a normal winter time flow, it would be a lot bluer than it is.
This is an 80 foot single plunge waterfall at the end of a 1.7 mile loop trail in Rhea County Tennessee! You can see Angie in the foreground slowly picking her way along the plunge pool to the spot I had set up to photograph. I had used the faster but much steeper trail at the top to get here!!! Our visit was during a light rain shower; but we made it even with the rocks and tree roots being really slick!
Water level was really low so the fall was not producing a lot of noise from the falling waters. I have seen shots of this falls at high flow rates shooting out into the splash pool below!!! Still a pretty falls and worth the hike at low water volume!
Ithaca Falls is a waterfall located within the city of Ithaca, New York. It is the last of a series of waterfalls along the hanging valley formed where Fall Creek intersects the glacial trough of Cayuga Lake. The falls are in an amphitheater formed by freezing and thawing of the weak shale which makes up most of the gorge walls. The splash pool, and the creek just below the falls, are a popular spot for fly fishing.
The area around the base of the falls was owned by Cornell University for many years, before being sold to the City of Ithaca in 2000 as a part of environmental cleanup. The area has been a popular, if dilapidated, park for many years; currently it is undergoing a major redesign and rebuild. In June 2016, the Ithaca Common Council voted to demolish a house directly north of the falls and add the parcel to the park. The city had acquired the house after the owner failed to pay property taxes.
The falls is present as the stylized "I" in the "Ithaca is Gorges" logo.

This is probably my favorite shot from my recent trip to Upper Caney Creek Falls. Among the moss, water, trees, etc. there are probably at least 10 differernt shades of green that are visible. The sun was just starting to lift through the clouds at this point, but I was still able to take a long exposure from below the splash pool.

Wahclella Falls is a spectacular and powerful two tier horsetail fall. The water volume of the final 60ft drop makes such an incredible sound as the water explodes into the splash pool below, it’s just an amazing site for all of your senses and one of the most popular falls in the Gorge. I spent some time here on Sunday, scrambling around the rocks, trees and into the chilly water, being in nature is such a wonderful way to clear your mind and recharge yourself, very therapeutic!

Funston Arch Complex
Kentucky
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe holiday! I know I did and to really kick it off right myself and good friend Christopher Morris decided to head down to Cumberland Falls State Park to spend the night at the lodge New Years Day. There's something to be said about having a Hot Brown for dinner (the best in the Ky Park System I must add) and follow it up with a glass of Buffalo Trace Kentucky Bourbon and reading The History Of Rock - 1972 while relaxing by the massive fireplace in the lodge lobby. That's pretty hard to beat!
That morning we headed out in search of a place called the Funston Arch Complex, a beautiful and secluded area that seriously is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. Featured here is just some of what we saw. For this shot I'm standing on an arch. To my right are two more arches and to my left out of sight is another arch. What is amazing about this place is a stream cascades down and flows beneath the arch you see across the way, then drops over two ledges into a splash pool shared by at 23 ft. tall waterfall. We spent several hours here and besides taking photographs we carried out a bunch of trash and destroyed 4 fire rings that folks had built under the arch and under the rock recesses. Outside of the residual human element, I had nature overload, that's for sure! Turns out this lovely place is on private land and due to this I'm not sharing the location, our hope is that maybe some day it will be accessible to the public because Chris and I both think it's worth National Forest protection! That's why we're planning on submitting some information about the arch complex to The Nature Conservancy to see if that could become a reality.
High quality prints are NOT available for this image however are for most others! Please, feel free to look around on my Flickr page or visit my website www.fultzfotos.com! For about five miles upstream from the New River Glade Creek is a catch and release stream. But here in the upper canyon it's catch and eat.
Behind me is a fella fishing and he already has a stringer loaded with trout. In just a minute he will throw his hook into that splash pool up ahead and in less than 30 seconds catch another nice 12 inch trout.

I've mentioned before that I'm not a fan of waterfalls with very large splash pools but I'm going to have to admit that the The Lower Falls On Glade Creek in West Virginia's New River Gorge had one of the more beautifully colored pools I've ever seen. While I was standing here I just loved how the rock reaches out into the pool and then there is nothing but color. Makes one wonder how deep is the abyss.

I have wanted to visit the Opal Creek area for many years and finally got the chance yesterday to do a little exploring. I will say when researching for my trip, there were a few discrepancies in the directions to the area in my books and some of the locations of the various falls are vague. So I want to thank Christina, Lynn and Greg for both having inspiring photo’s of the area and for helping me with directions as well.
As I eagerly approached the Opal Creek area, I was relieved that a thick cloud cover was starting roll in. I also noticed the higher elevation trees had a large dusting of snow thanks to our interesting weather of late. Then to my dismay, the thick clouds started to open up with snow, and as I was getting closer the road was getting more snow covered! When I reached the trail head of Henline Falls I was in about 3” of snow, not at all what I was expecting or wanting!
Henline Falls is a beautiful 90 foot waterfall that spills into an amazing green splash pool by an old mine shaft. I also made an attempt to visit some of the “family falls” that are located very close, but chose the wrong, incredibly steep, slick, long trail, that led me to an overlook view point of the valley. I did explore and hike quite a bit and now have a pretty decent understanding of the area and will be making a return trip very soon!

Here's a second image from Lower Lewis River Falls taken from the edge of the splash pool. It's a popular composition due to the colorful rocks that sit just inches under the water during this time of year.
There is always that person that likes to splash those people that are chillin' in a controlled manner...people floating somewhere between half wet and half dry. I am the chillin' type. So if I get splashed, be prepared to be submarined.
Calf Creek is a popular hiking area in the Grand Staircase of the Escalante National Monument. I took the hike to Upper Calf Creek Falls, but became more enamored with the adjacent alcove and pool. I imagine that thunderstorms could drench the large expanse of sandstone above, sending a torrent through the narrow canyon to spill into the splash pool below the alcove.

I woke up 10 minutes before my 5:45AM alarm yesterday morning, already high with anticipation. I was purposefully avoiding work and responsibility for the day to go adventure. My only goal was to see some autumn colors in the Columbia River Gorge. I find myself constantly in the habit of trying to cram too many stops or destinations in and being unable to really soak in where I am and what I'm doing. Having no itinerary or schedule can do wonders for clearing that issue right up.
I spent about an hour and a half roaming around in front of the thundering Wahclella Falls in the Gorge. It's my favorite waterfall in the Gorge, for it's easy access and saturated colors, its moss covered face and turquoise splash pool. After some torrential rains this past weekend, all of the waterfalls were set to maximum flow. The sound and the spray coming off of Wahclella was enough to make you stumble back if you approached it too closely. The splash pool and stream flowing from it were higher than I've seen them. Not that I'm complaining, we desperately need all the rain we can get.
I spent 20 or so minutes setting up and testing out this shot. Got quite a few laughs from other hikers as I would set the 10 second timer and run the 30 or 40 feet around a tree and jump up on this rock just in time for the shutter to close. Only to run back and check the results.

I have always struggled trying to come away with a nice comp of the 25' Lower Falls at Old Mans Cave, especially with it's large splash pool and hardly any foreground. I decided this morning to spend some time hoping to come away with a decent photo before making the spectacular exit from the gorge, climbing up a series of stone and stairs, passing underneath a seasonal waterfall, and then up through a tunnel to the rim.
Another comp of spirit falls. This isnt as good of a comp but I thought I'd throw it up here anyways! Check it out large to see that splash pool.

About 175 yards above the lower dry fall, I found another one that I had to circumvent. Both were photogenic, I thought.
In this one, rainwater would flow down a narrow channel to the bottom. Over centuries, the spray carved out a small splash pool.
This short, but wide waterfall, is one I myself have been wanting to see and photograph for about 5 months now. This past week, I had an early morning trip planned for Saturday. On Saturday I woke at 4:30am, then made the hour drive to Caesar Creek State Park, hiked about 20 minutes through a dark, wet forest to get to the falls at sunrise. I shot several photographs at various angles, this one is my favorite of the shoot. The creek, known at Flat Fork Creek, flows through a small, but deep gorge and over this waterfall before merging into the Lake. The swirls in the splash pool, were the most dramatic I've photographed yet. This photograph shows Horseshoe Falls and part of the big swirls below it.

Oftentimes they'll be a rainbow at the splash pool in the late morning when the sun is behind you providing front light on the waterfall. Mt. Rainier National Park, Washington, USA.
Yesterday was my first visit to the falls at low water levels and she certainly had a different character! I had a thoroughly enjoyable time sitting on the edge of the splash pool for over an hour, watching the wispy waters dance around the bottom of the falls. Every few minutes, the spray would reach out and splash the top of the big rock at the base. The image was softened with an orton effect.
Looking Glass Creek
Pisgah National Forest
Transylvania County, North Carolina
This beautiful waterfall is very close to route 276, a few miles below the Blue Ridge Parkway, and is easily accessed; as a result, it is popular, and people walking in front of the camera, or getting into the splash pool below the falls, make it challenging to shoot. After rain and fog earlier in week, sunshine added to the challenge here. Both falls and creek take their names from nearby Looking Glass Rock. Reported heights found for the falls are from 60 to 65 feet.

I spent the morning shooting beautiful Abiqua Falls on Saturday with Pat Campbell (pdxphotoguy) As we were driving there was this heavy low fog building and we were thinking, this could be some nice conditions. I had a vision of the sun creating some nice rays through the fog. Well, we got to the falls and there was some fog in the air, but nothing like what was above. The conditions were very nice though. What caught my eye imeadiately was these sexy curves in the rocks bordering the splash pool. There are so many incredible comps to be had at this lovely spot.
If you haven't seen Pat's work, do yourself a favor and wade through his stream here; www.flickr.com/photos/38007179@N05/ you'll be glad you did.
Thanks for the morning of shooting Pat and thanks for breakfast as well buddy. Lets do it again :)
