Colourful blossom of the spindle bush, seen in Panshanger Great Park.
The Panshanger Estate in the Mimram Valley, near Hertford, was designed on the advice of the famous landscape architects Sir Humphry Repton and Lancelot 'Capability' Brown.
One of my other loves is stained glass and particularly Tiffany Lamps. The idea of decorating my spindles and wheels has been floating around in my head for a while.
Armed with some Ashford Classic spindles, my copy of 'The Lamps of Tiffany' and some patience, this is the result!

These strange green flowers are on a shrub of about 6m high.
The common name of "Spindle Tree" derives from the fact that the tough and splinter-resistant wood was used to make spindles for spinning fibres into thread.

The first four chip-carved spindles Ed made based on a spindle bought over 15 years ago in a marketplace in Greece.
East Indian Rosewood is the gorgeous wood used to craft the whorl on this Tibetan support spindle. The shaft is Cocobolo.
One of my latest resin spindles, this one has a slightly wonky shaft and was always going to be just for me. I was wanting to test the stain and how it holds to the flicking... So far, so good!

This Tibetan support spindle is approximately 12 1/2 inches long and weighs 50g (1.8 ounces). The Goncalo Alves whorl measures approximately 1.75 inches and has been attached to a Birch shaft. The tip has been crafted from hard Mesquite.

This sculpture by artist Blessing Hancock is located in the Village of West Greenville plaza near the Anchorage restaurant. It was created to honor the 15th anniversary of the Artisphere art festival. Titled 'Spindle', it is modeled after the spindles in textile mills of the past. The internal dynamic colored LED lighting adds a distinct character at night.
The metal surface is composed of words supplied by residents about Greenville. At night their shadow spells out words on the ground.
This is a bottom view showing the yarn that started in Corner #4 being wound diagonally to Corner #2.
The old idea that the best autumn colour is seen on acid soils is proved false here. The spindle, in company with the Guelder rose (Viburnum opulus), dogwood (Cornus sanguinea) and such like set the Southdowns chalk ablaze at this time of year.
