Seeking sanctuary in the archive today, after spending hours waiting for the rain to stop. Unfortunate we have already used up our average of 5 days of sunshine this mouth in Somerset...!

In the UK it is against the law to pick, uproot or destroy bluebells....so...

Last week I was in San Diego to help train some of the folks at Best Buy. One of the more extensive retail training programs I have ever seen, Best Buy takes key people out of their store for a week... flies them to someplace like San Diego. There they spend time with professional photographers and manufacturer's reps learning the gear and techniques needed to talk with you.

One of the stops was "Action".

i'm slowly catching up with your streams after taking a few days off to move house. it all went smoothly and we're settling in nicely. it's only five minutes from the sea so we're looking forward to spending the lighter evenings and weekends at the beach.

hope things are good with you.

The weather yesterday morning was not great so I figured a recce at a new location was the best way to spend the morning. I only took a few shots, mainly for reference but this little cascade caught my eye so I took a little bit more time over this composition.

Spending most of their life at sea, red-tailed tropicbirds, or koa’e ‘ula, return to land only to nest. Agile in the air and in the water, they are awkward on land with short legs behind their center of mass. Nests are simple scrapes in holes and overhangs of shoreline cliffs, carefully selected to be out of reach of terrestrial predators. The nest site landing in the vertical volcanic escarpment is challenging and may take several attempts. Paired adult koa’e ‘ula take turns fiercely guarding their single egg and subsequent hatchling. After several weeks of growth, the nestling will be left alone as feeding takes the effort of both adults plunge diving into the ocean for fish and squid then returning to regurgitate meals. The red-tailed tropicbird is one of only three species of tropicbirds worldwide and identified by the red bill and distinctive long, red, central tail streamers. Their aerial courtship displays over the ocean are fascinating to watch. Tropicbirds are superb aerial acrobats and the only bird I can think of, other than hummingbirds, which can also fly backwards. Part of their aerial mating repertoire includes circling each other like a backwards Ferris wheel. Surely one of the most beautiful of all the seabirds!

This is a small part of the Castle at Oberhofen, standing at Lake Thun and after sunset it gave me the right setting for a scenery like this.

Enjoy...

Before starting my cemetery project in earnest, I was shooting on a lot of Fomapan 100, using the x-ray film for cloudy days and moodiness. Because of this, some cemeteries that I photographed were done only in Fomapan.

I wanted to reshoot this grave, and did so on New Years Day. I took eight photos on x-ray and this is one of them. The results were mixed, to say the least.

I've written about Mary Dodge before:

There are three stones, but four lie under the ground. Mary Dodge was born in 1849 in Oregon Territory. Her parents were homesteaders. In 1864, at the age of 15, she married Robert Bruce Dodge, more than twice her age.

She gave birth to her first a few months later. Her name was Alace and she died before she was ten months old.

A year later came Thaddeus, and he was healthy, living well into old age.

Her third child, another son, now remembered only as "B.R." was burned to death at the age of one.

Her fourth child was a daughter, Margaret Permelia Dodge. She would live even longer than her brother Thaddeus, to the age of 78.

But her fifth was Julius, and he died on the day he was born, December 2, 1876.

This was also the day Mary, the mother of five children, only two of who survived past their first birthdays.

Mary was 26 or 27 when she died. She was buried with Julius, who is denoted on the stone as: "Also our son Julius."

Two years later, her husband married Ada Lilly Marcy and they had ten more children together. Miraculously, all ten survived well into adulthood. Their mother, Ada, lived until the age of 92.

Spending my time with Carl Zeiss Ultron. Some bokeh exploration, just a two feet from my desk. SOme color toning was done in Darktable. Not because it was needed, but because I was in a bit different mood than Nikon rendering.

I had full intentions of spending the day just south of Parry Sound railfanning but while I was waiting just down the road a CN signal maintainer rolled by and said there were no train in the area except for 119. Reluctantly I made my way over and after a bit more waiting a storm came up. Luckily it didn't hit until a bit after 119 charged through.

Something I only noticed while editing is the moniker on the plow. I've only noticed this specific one on tankers.

They spend most of their time feeding high in the tree canopies when there is blossom. These little birds can easily be overlooked - but their distinctive little tinkling songs carry a surprisingly long distance and always betray their presence. Duller plumaged females are not only less conspicuous they sing very little, if at all.

With its head, breast and upper back all with bright-scarlet plumage, this species of honeyeater is well camouflaged as it flits about among the blossoms of callistemon (or bottlebrush) shrubs, whose flowers are similarly coloured bright red.

Spending time at my SLmom's old place.. I sure miss it! Think it was the ducks that made it the best.. ^.^

I'm off my head and my mouth's getting dry

I'm high, but I try, try, try, oh my

Around, and round, and oh my my

Let's spend the night together

Now I need you more than ever

I 've made similar shots with the same boat and the same mountains again and again. But this is something I do usually in my everyday life, when I have no time to pick up my camera and spend time searching for new subjects. In my morning walk, I try to find new points of view for things I have shooted in the past. Once more I used my full manual telescope lens to shorten the distance between the background of snowy mountains and the port.

Spending the evening outside The Louvre in Paris, France. I bet most of you will recognize the place!

After spending the night in Beatty, we stopped by Rhyolite ghost town on our way back into Death Valley. I think this was JP and Jenni's first time here.

Rhyolite is a fun stop, but it has become rather well known, and can be a tad crowded. This building is the old railroad depot. It's private property and fenced. I've never beed inside.

In one corner of the property, someone had mutilated the fence enough to just poke your camera through. There were some power lines in the shot, which I removed in Photoshop. Processing was done in Lightroom.

Spending time the last day of 2022 snowshoeing in Bernina Pass in the Swiss canton of Graubünden

I have just returned home after spending the day hiking fourteen miles up Catbells (1,479ft), High Spy (2,142ft) and Dale Head (2,470ft) alongside Derwentwater in the Lake District and I have to say that my body is broken but my mind is strong and the sense of satisfaction and achievement is immense.

The Lake District has enjoyed several weeks of pure blistering sunshine and temperatures in the mid to high 20's yet today (on the day that I go with a friend of mine), the rain came down, the temps plummted to around 14 degrees and the wind picked up and the whole scene of Causey Pike from Catbells looked incredibly threatening but I would always take these kind of conditions over pure blue skies and no clouds any day of the week.

I took up my Canon 5D MK4 DSLR complete with the Benro Angel carbon fibre travel tripod (FTA28CV1) and it was bloody fantastic. Small and compact, lightweight, strong and stable even in the wind. I took this image using it. Amazing piece of kit. Super impressed.

Well it's time for a shower now and something to eat followed by relaxing in front of the TV and falling asleep no doubt. The fancy piece of watch tech on Trish's wrist recorded that we had walked 29,000 steps and 22.48km. Phew. Night all :D

Spending a long weekend up in SW Buckyville, so I figured I’d shoot my shot at crossing a couple railroads off the hit list. After slamming the Iowa River, I shot a couple of IC depots en route to Shell Rock hoping to find something working. I was delighted to find one of their two paired slug sets working the south end of Butler Yard. I hung out for a few hours shooting various angles of that job, before needing to blast off toward Cedar Falls, Dubuque, and points east.

Spending the best part of the morning at a viewpoint on the Ben Venue pathway near Loch Achray with the glowing morning light in October. Could not get any better than this. So many photographic opportunities.

After spending hours up at Delicate Arch in Arches National Park waiting for the milkyway to rise above for some time lapse and photos. It was already 3am in the morning when I headed back down to the parking lot after miles of hiking on the Delicate Arch Trail. But the starry night sky is still nice and bright. Even though I was already pretty tired after the waiting and hiking, I told myself that it was a great opportunity to keep shooting. I drove to another area in the park by the Window Trail Loop to take some more shots. It was already 3am, I walking into the trail and took some more photos. The landscape here is very interesting like you are on another planet. Almost a little creepy when you are alone around 4am.

Spend the day hiking yesterday!!! LOVE this time of year!!!

Hope you are having a wonderful week!!! Thanks for taking a moment to stop by and view my photo!!! Will be back later tonight to catch up on some of your beautiful work!!! Have a great day!!!

Happy New Year!! My choice for Redux is High Key. I am still working on it but I like it so will spend more time trying to improve. One thing you cannot improve though, is Jelly Beans!! Enjoy!! HMM

While spending some time on the 7 mile miracle, I captured this scene. The north shore of O'ahu in the winter is the site of big waves often ideal for surfing. Several surf contests are held including the Billabong Pipermasters in December and the Volkom Pipepro in February. The famous surf breaks along here include the Banzai Pipeline and Waimea Bay. Thanks for the view.

Chester's in the foreground, with Sweet Pea taking up the rear. Tank's siblings, so I'm kinda like their Aunt. =)

I came into their house to let them out lunchtime. Chester came down, but Sweet Pea wouldn't, so up I went to see what was holding her up. Turns out, it was the comfy bed. She just didn't want to get down and go out. So I popped off a few shots and then coaxed them both outside. They are as adorable in real life as they look in this pic. Don't let Chester's expression fool you... he was loving this, because treats always follow!

In fact, that's what he's eyeing right now. =)

Spending the day at Wick on Sunday 12/2/2023 is 158715 which will wait until tomorrow morning to work the second southbound service.

After spending five months in a rehabilitation centre I managed to leave my wheelchair.

I then decided to set myself little goals everyday. So I do my physio outside (when the weather permits it).

I do it one step at a time with a bottle of oxygen in a trolley and small equipment to work out so that both arms and both legs can function again.

It really is a special walk around the pond and it is also a good excuse to spend a lot of time taking pictures.

Your future is made of each day that goes by.

Spending their retirement years out in the baking Sun.

Happy Truck Thursday!

Spending our summer holiday in the German Mosel area (you can see our tent at the far right in this picture). It was a beautiful quiet summer evening and the river was like a mirror reflecting the landscape. The light was perfect and we found a great spot on top of the bridge for shooting a panorama.

And we did.

But with an extra: ... suddenly 2 speedboats entered our view from underneath us producing a whole lotta noise.

Although it was only for a breath moment, I think the presence of the boats adds a kick to this otherwise maybe dull image.

Spending time at Isle of Pandasia , Dolly (221, 136, 23) - Adult

It's a glorious day today and I've been outside gardening for hours. I'm dead tired and, therefore, posting what I have on hand. Here are some of the treasures I bought at HomeSense last week.

Most of the "silver" things, on the mantel, came home that day.

Three more shots in comments and more to post in future. ;)

Spending hours to catch one light.. worth it!

No huge processing, some noise reduction at ISO4000 but the lightnings do the rest

Years ago we decided to spend a hot summer evening cruising back roads north of Newcastle looking for tarantulas. June is a good time to hunt for these impressive spiders as they wander about seeking females hiding in their burrows. We encountered this fellow while we were driving slowly down a dirt road in True, about 6 miles north of Newcastle. I'm not lucky enough to EVER find $20 just sitting waiting to be picked up. I would NEVER be lucky enough to find one with a Tarantula guarding it... waiting to be photographed. This situation is actually a followup to a failed attempt to capture a tarantula (this one) and bring it in a Tupperware salad bowl back to our cottage in Newcastle for an extended photo session. The lead-in to this pic's situation is here:

www.flickr.com/photos/61377404@N08/50111294752/in/album-7...

After grabbing a single tarantula / Tupperware bowl image and having our would-be captive scoot away into the weeds beside the road, we figured a different approach might net us a few pics.

The $20 bill was carefully planted by myself a few feet away from the tarantula, which had paused in its flight from the salad bowl. I worked the bill into the grass to make it seem like it had been dropped, blown by the wind and carried along until it lodged in the grass. The bill just sitting flat on the ground wouldn't do. We wanted something to show the size of this creature, but the setup had to look natural. With a small twig I carefully "coaxed" our subject onto the bill. My sister wanted no part of this operation. His jinking in the wrong direction a few times was corrected with light leg taps which eventually maneuvered him into the position you see here. When we were finished he was NOT allowed to keep the $20.

Spending a little time on a snowy night in Fox Chase (Northeast Philadelphia)

After spending the night in Newton, IA, and upon packing up the car to head east, I turned on the scanner and immediately heard the IAIS 510 copying a warrant for the CBBI to head east out of town! Well, what's any good railfan to do in this situation but to give chase when there's good sunlight, and parallel roads?

As such, the final shot of this mini-chase was in the quaint, Iowa college town of Grinnell, where we see it crossing over the old M&StL. Recently, THAT line has been seeing all of the railfan attention due to the presence of a patched ex-SP GP60 on the Oskie local, but it turns out that the Iowa Interstate DOES still run trains through there.
