Today I had the pleasure of spending time with one of my dearest friends at Buttonwoods Farm in Connecticut. These junctures are fleeting as the sunflowers in this immense field will soon become a deliberate act of omission. Within the last week many of the sunflowers have already succumbed to an early grave.
Life is about a cycle of birth and death. Both of them usher in change. Beauty can be found with your eyes anywhere you choose to focus. From a fallen leaf within autumn's blanket, to the blossoming of life shortly after winters departure.

After spending the night in Alexandria enjoying dinner and drinks with a good friend we headed out Friday morning only 15 min from his home for a wildly productive morning of photographing 12 different trains in the span of only three hours (plus a couple we didn't bother with because it was raining so hard when we first showed up).
With the world renowned Sakura (cherry blossoms) at peak there was only one place to go to photograph some trains. Few places in the district are more iconic for rail photography than the short bridge over the Washington Channel flowing from the Tidal Basin as seen from East Potomac Park.
This was the second of nine trains I shot at this spot before we moved to two other locations for trains 10 thru 12. I'm not actually sure what this is as there were no more Virginia Railway Express inbound trains scheduled at this time so perhaps it's a returning protect set or some other deadhead going back toward Union Station or Ivy City Yard. VRE V50 (MPI MP36PH-3C blt. Jun. 2010) shoving on the south end is at about MP CFP 111.3 on modern day CSXT's RF&P Subdivision. These rails leading to the Long Bridge over the Potomac River (out of sight to the left) are ex Pennsylvania Railroad and a few catenary poles remain as seen in this shot from the days when long freights behind electric motors headed for classification at the mighty and long gone Potomac Yard.
The roof of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is visible at right center behind the spring trees and the 555 ft tall Washington Monument rises beyond

There are two cat cafés in Glasgow, Purrple Cat Café and Meow Café. For those who are stuck between the two of them (What else do you people spend time doing on vacation exactly?!?!), I enjoyed both but Purrple Cat Café has cats that are not pure bred cats which I like more. There are so many wonderful cats in this world who need homes even if they aren't "instagrammable" (Who cares-ALL CATS are instagrammable!) Anyway, Purrple Cat Café had over 30 cats but it was such a well taken care of place without even any smells that I was highly impressed. It gets my highest cat café recommendation which is 6/5 happy cats !

It's mainly very expensive clothes for people who spend summer holidays on boats. With summer over, I don't think there will be many customers. There was only one boat left in the harbour after I saw the last three sailboats leave. The canal will now be closed until next summer.

After spending a very pleasant morning with Andy, I was walking back along Cross Street in Manchester to catch the tram home; from St. Peter’s Square, where else would it be? Heading in that direction I was walking directly into the sun when I spotted the rim lighting on these silhouetted pedestrians. I quite liked the effect it had on their hair, hats etc., so I took a picture; and nearly got run down by the cyclist…..!

Birds spend considerable time preening, or grooming their feathers. It's often done while sunning, dusting, or bathing. It's a bird's way of maintaining the health of their feathers. It keeps them aligned for optimal flight, removes damaged feathers, and removes parasites. They also spread a waxy oily substance from a gland at the base of their tale. This keeps the feathers waterproof and flexible. It's no wonder then that birds carry out this task quite often.
I've been spending the last few evenings at one of my favourite spots catching some amazing Winter sunsets. There's nothing like a bit of beach time with my camera to sooth the soul and calm the senses.
Pictured here is the breakwater at the end of the St.Kilda pier and just to the right of this pic you can see people gathering near the waters edge . . . that's because at dusk, from in and amongst those rocks, penguins will appear.
It's quite a wonderful sight and even more amazing to think that only 8km away is the hustle and bustle of the city!

I see the crystal raindrops fall
And the beauty of it all
Is when the sun comes shining through
To make those rainbows in my mind
When I think of you sometime
And I want to spend some time with you
Just the two of us
We can make it if we try
Just the two of us
Just the two of us
Building castles in the sky
Just the two of us
You and I
We look for love no time for tears
Wasted water's all that is
And it don't make no flowers grow
Good things might come to those who wait
Not for those who wait too late
We gotta go for all we know
Just the two of us
We can make it if we try
Just the two of us
Just the two of us
Building castles in the sky
Just the two of us
You and I
I hear the crystal raindrops fall
On the window down the hall
And it becomes the morning dew
And darling when the morning comes
And I see the morning sun
I want to be the one with you...
After spending time up on the hill at Črnotiče I moved to the other side of the station to see trains coming down the ramp towards Koper.
After seeing a Taurus and a pair of light engines the light was getting lower and some clouds were forming and I was considering taking the Taurus as a victory and leaving. However the sound of a horn got my hopes up. SZ 363-027 rounded the bend with the sun and clouds playing ball with a car train for Koper. You can see on the hillside just how close the clouds were getting so this shot turned out to be a very nice end to a very good first day in Slovenia.
We were lucky and had a family of Great Horned Owls residing not too far from home. They were pretty deep in the trees and didn’t give too many opportunities, but it always seemed worth spending some time with them. This is an older juvenile flexing its talons. Spend a good few hours walking around our local patch looking for signs of life now the sun is warming us up. I stood for a few hours trying to capture the Bumbles on the newly flowering Blacktorns.
Have a wonderful weekend my friends. Thank you for all your wonderful comments and invites they are really appreciated!

After spending some time grazing on the sedge grasses that are exposed at low time in the estuary, the mother grizzly and yearling cub land safely back onshore near their den at high tide, Khutzeymateen estuary, BC. The mother bear is still on alert for the danger to her cub posed by a male grizzly in the area.

Seventh image in my Bird Art series...
The wind chill was 2 degrees below zero fahrenheit this evening at the harbor as I braved the cold to find and photograph the Snowy owl. That bird was nowhere to be found, but I did spend some time with this sweet Mourning Dove on the rocks.
I love their docile and trusting nature. They always allow me to capture some nice images, for which I'm grateful.
After spending practically four weeks in bed sick with the flu and other health problems, I was finally able to go back to work on the farm this morning. And after finishing my work on the farm, guess what I did. Yesssss, I took the car and drove around and starting shooting winter scenes. Boy, not being able to take pictures for almost 4 weeks is tough. But with the beautiful sun this morning it really helped boost my spirits. This beautiful little covered bridge is simply gorgeous.
After spending the morning working with the CL-2 crew to get both jobs ready, the New York, Susquehanna & Western's CL-1 job gets on the move south from Cortland, New York as another snow squall moves through the valley. The railroad's two SD45's provide the power, taking an empty welded rail trainset and one covered hopper to Binghamton.

How to spend a Monday morning after a long weekend ...
These are the moments when I want to be a cat.
Dating from 1933 this Austin Taxi Cab is still in its original condition, Recently acquired by its new owner after spending 45 years in Sweden,Seen at a event in Driffield,
I took this photograph a couple of years ago, mainly out of boredom. I was standing at the exact spot where I took it, waiting for a friend who was late. The image itself was insignificant. Other views that are more representative of Sitges, a seaside town close to Barcelona, are also available. It's well-known for its beauty and lively atmosphere. It's also where I used to spend my summers during my childhood and early youth.
I thought it wasn't worth sharing, so I decided to delete it. Then I had an idea: I'd try to reinvent the old postcards people bought when I was a kid. They were, somehow, similar to this shot: loud, overexposed, and of poor quality.
With the arrival of foreign tourists, greetings from... began to appear. Previously, it would have been "Recuerdos desde...", always in Spanish because Catalan was publicly forbidden and restricted to family settings.
They used to bear a stamp of some kind, such as a flag or a town shield.
Those who know the place will immediately realize it's a modern image. Apart from the way people are dressed, you can see buildings that didn't exist at that time.
I suppose those who have never seen anything like this, or who are not reading this explanation, won't like the photograph. Anyway, I had a great time editing it.
Spending much more time at home these days, I've been practicing a little more macro as I am sure many are. With a recent cold snap last week, there was some ice on one of our windows which I thought captured some close-ups of.
Thanks for viewing and hope everyone has a safe, healthy and happy Easter!!
After spending an hour in the cozy coffee shop, catching up with friends, you find yourself standing at a crosswalk as everyone leaves. The temperature has dropped significantly to 36°F since you left home and you realize that perhaps you should have dressed more warmly. Based on your body language and expression, you understand the mistake. #streetphotography

After spending the morning loading cars with coal from the underground mine in Kirby, the Cumberland Mine Railroad is nearing the end of its run as it crosses over Alicia Road at the east end of the line. With a pair of SD38-2's running push-pull, the crew moves the coal 17 miles across this isolated railroad from the mine to the Cumberland Harbor Docks on the Monongahela River where it is transloaded to barges.

...A TIME FOR LOVE - Jamie Cullum
A time for summer skies
For hummingbirds and butterflies
For tender words that harmonize with love
A time for climbing hills
For leaning out of windowsills
Admiring daffodils above ADMIRING THE DAFFODILS ABOVE
A time for holding hands together
A time for rainbow coloured weather
A time of make believe that we've been dreaming of
As time goes drifting by
The willow bends and so do I
But all my friends whatever skies above BUT OH, MY FRIENDS, WHATEVER SKY ABOVE
I know a time for spring I'VE KNOWN A TIME FOR SPRING
A time for fall
But best of all
A time for love
A time for holding hands together
A time for rainbow coloured weather
A time of make believe that we've been dreaming of
As time goes drifting by
The willow bends and so do I
But all my friends whatever skies above
I know a time for spring
A time for fall
But best of all
A time for love

Today I spend some quality time with Flatty, my most treasured Kookaburra. There are very few days when she does not come to visit, but today was different. Kookaburras have a special call that signified danger. Today Flatty came to the backdoor and gave the danger call. She repeated it a few times, and so I went to her.
For about ten minutes Flatty stayed, and I stood with her, she was safe from any danger while ever she was with me. Standing about 30 cm, or a foot, from her I videoed about 5 minutes of our time together. I hoped she would repeat the alarm call, but she knew she was safe with me.
When she flies away you will hear the call of another bird, this call is the "all clear" to say the danger had passed. This video is just a few clips from our time together, nothing dramatic, but precious to me, and something I'm happy to share. To me, it is a huge privilege to have such a trusting relationship with a wild bird.

So taking a small break from the street shots. Lately I've been spending more time building up a portfolio for a variety of commercial types of photography, from promotional portraits to head shots, family portraits and the like. This here is from a shoot I did with an old mate of mine who is a fabulous writer of speculative fiction. You can check out his website here if interested.
