This Thursday, 16th February, our Spanish students explored one of the Basque Country’s most important historical sites: the little town of Guernica. This visit was one of the free cultural activities that Instituto Hemingway offers its students, so that they might complement their studies of the Spanish language with knowledge of the Spanish culture.

Inspired by artist Frida Kahlo, these Sandburg Elementary 4K students created their own self portraits. Sandburg students met with educator Barb Alvarado over a series of classroom visits in November and December of 2017, culminating in a Frieda Fiesta event at the Hawthorne Library in January of 2018.

This visit was part of the library's Language Liaison program, connecting young children and their families and caregivers to library resources for early learning in Spanish and Hmong. The Language Liaison program is partially funded by a grant from the Madison Public Library Foundation.

The people of San Sebastian typically dress up as cooks, and as Napoleon-era soldiers.

Es frecuente que la gente de la ciudad se disfracen de cocineros, y de soldados de la época napoleónica.

Colombian songwriter and pop star Shakira in New York, May 16, 2017. Not long ago, Shakira didn’t know if she would ever make another album. “I was full of doubts, and I thought I was never going to make good music again,” she said. But the songs in Spanish on her new album “El Dorado” seems to have brought back her playfulness, and the track “Chantaje” already has 1.5 billion streams. The marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) is an iguana found only on the Galápagos Islands that has the ability, unique among modern lizards, to forage in the sea, making it a marine reptile. The iguana can dive over 9 m (30 ft) into the water. It has spread to all the islands in the archipelago, and is sometimes called the Galápagos marine iguana. It mainly lives on the rocky Galápagos shore to warm from the comparably cold water, but can also be spotted in marshes and mangrove beaches. The marine iguana is currently labeled as vulnerable in its conservation status. The iguana is only known to be living in the Galapagos Islands and its population has been gradually decreasing throughout the years. Since the environment in which they live didn't have many natural predators they never developed the defenses needed to help protect them against new enemies. This lack of development makes them more vulnerable to attack and becoming ill due to new bacteria as these islands attract more and more people and animals from different parts of the world. The marine iguana is completely protected under the laws of Ecuador, and is listed under CITES Appendix II.
