Guinea pig is Ecuador is one of the traditional foods you should try while visiting Ecuador, Bolivia or Peru. It is more commonly known as cuy (kew-y) in the indigenous language of Kichwa, because of the high-pitched bird-like sound the animal makes.

Many people wonder why Ecuadorians eat guinea pig and it’s because guinea pigs were the main source of meat before cattle were introduced to the country. The number of cuy became a status symbol because it meant you had enough money to eat meat. It was never an everyday meal but a luxury.

It is much larger than what we know as a guinea pig in North America and it about the size of a rabbit. While many travelers think eating guinea pig is gross, I don’t think you can really judge if you eat meat of any kind.

307 S. Broadway

Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California

On my way to my favorite camera repair shop I drive down Broadway. I got this shot while stopped very briefly at a red light.

This section of town has many great old buildings including the historic Million Dollar Theater.   It has been restored and shows many old films and Spanish language theatre.

I need to come back to this area to take pictures. The art deco buildings, shops, and people make this a target rich environment for photography.

I am grateful for the introduction of sanitization sprays and jellies to places everyplace during the last several years in the U.S. because they have helped me, for WHEREAS small but noticeable parts of each year were formerly wasted by me being sick, nowadays I am sick for 0% of the time.

I found this neat dispenser inside of a portojohn/portalet plastic portapot biffie in a park in Plymouth, Minnesota! I can tell it's very old because it says antiseptic instead of antibacterial. I am attracted to the pink plastic colour but what are the sticky brownish droplets! Are they soap.

Way up @ the top of the pic: Did you know portosans are recyclable into new uses!

Churros are the Spanish equivalent of American donuts or German Krapfen. They are a type of pastry, made from donut mix, deep fried in hot oil and sprinkled with sugar and are a treat not to be missed.

What a great night at the Free Library of Philadelphia! Isabel Allende presented her latest book: Maya’s Notebook at the Montgomery Auditorium of the Parkway Central Library on Sunday, April 28th, 2013. In the up-and-close conversation, Allende touched on several topics from world-wide authors, books, family traditions and politics making the audience eager to know her deeply.

In this informal conversation, Allende mentioned that as an author, she must feel connected not only with the personages that are being develop in the storytelling, but also with the events -- geographical and cultural components—that are occurring in the narrative. In addition, the author states that she never writes a story for an intended target audience. For instance, Maya’s Notebook was never written for a young adult group of readers.

Finally, Allende believes that women around the world, when confronted with life difficulties are stronger in spirit. The challenges that women face everyday help each one of them to become a great leader. This was a great conversation!!!

Coming home late last night, I passed this handwritten poster, which had been taped over an ad for an upcoming film. Translation: "The United States assassinated 24 civilians in Haditha, Iraq. Who is the real terrorist?"

This is the first time in my long years in this neighborhood that I've seen such direct criticism of US foreign policy done by a local resident. (i.e.: Not a printed poster or sticker.) Aside from the political message, I like the flash-free city lights in this late-night shot, the lights in the windows and the car's tail-lights as it crosses the street... Not too many folks on foot at this hour!

Needless to say, this did not remain posted for long. In early June 2010, I noticed that even the phone booth had been removed. That's progress, I guess...
