Athletic Bilbao take their nickname from the story of Saint Mammes. Mammes was an early Christian thrown to the lions by the Romans. They refused to eat him and he was later made a saint. San Mamés stadium was built by a church dedicated to Saint Mammes.
Athletic Bilbao tienen su mote por su conexión con San Mamés. Mamés era un cristiano antiguo, arrojado a los leones por los Romanos. Los leones se negaron a comerle, y después fue canonziado. El estadio se construyó vecino a una iglesia dedicada a este santo.
On Friday, 20th January, a few of our students travelled to San Sebastian to celebrate the Tamborrada, the city's most important festival.

One of the most important attractions of Guernica is the Tree of Guernica, which can be found protected by railings in the grounds of the Casa de las Juntas. The current tree is in fact a cutting of the original, and was planted in 2005 because the original tree was dying. The ancient tree survived the 1937 bombing and can now be found enthroned in Greek columns, a symbol of the town’s perseverance and its reconstruction.
Lo más importante en el pueblo es ‘el árbol’ que se puede encontrar dentro de las verjas de la Casa de Juntas. El árbol actual es un retoño del árbol original y fue plantado en 2005 porque el original estaba muriéndose. El original, que está rodeado por columnas griegas sobrevivió el bombardeo de 1937 y hoy en día es un símbolo de la perseverancia y la reconstrucción de la ciudad.

Next, we escaped the rain in the Peace Museum. Tucked away in the centre of Guernica, the museum boasts a very modern and innovative interior with many interactive exhibits.The Peace Museum is much more than a museum, but a place which seeks to explore the concept of peace itself, and search for the means to achieve it in the world.
Después escapamos la lluvia vasca con una vista al Museo de la Paz. Enclavado en el centro de Guernica, el museo dispone de un interior modernísimo con muchas exhibiciones interactivas. Este sitio no solo es un museo, sino también un sitio donde se puede explorar el concepto de la paz y cómo conseguirla.

One of the most iconic symbols of Guernica is the tiled reproduction of Picasso's "Guernica". Picasso's Cubist style poigniantly demonstrates the horror and chaos of that terrible day.

Inspired by artist Frida Kahlo, these Sandburg Elementary 4K students created their own self portraits. Sandburg students met with educator Barb Alvarado over a series of classroom visits in November and December of 2017, culminating in a Frieda Fiesta event at the Hawthorne Library in January of 2018.
This visit was part of the library's Language Liaison program, connecting young children and their families and caregivers to library resources for early learning in Spanish and Hmong. The Language Liaison program is partially funded by a grant from the Madison Public Library Foundation.

Known in Basque as the "Zubizuri", this white bridge was built by Santiago Calatrava between 1990 and 1997.
El Zubizuri (del euskera "puente blanco"), también conocido como el Puente Peatonal del Campo de Volantín, aunque popularmente llamado puente de Calatrava, es un puente en arco (cuya pista cuelga de él) sobre la ría del Nervión. Fue construído por el arquitecto Calatrava entre el 1990 y el 1997.

We started our tour with a wander along the river into the city centre, towards Zurriola beach. There, we explored the famous Kursaal building, a conference centre located right on the seafront. Along the Concha bay, we were impressed by the powerful waves and the skill of the multitude of surfers riding them.
Empezamos el recorrido con un paseo a lo largo de la ría hacía a dentro de la ciudad, hasta la playa Zurriola, donde se encuentra la famosa Kursal, un centro de conferencias y congresos al lado del mar. Fuimos a lo largo de la costa, y nuestros estudiantes contemplaron las olas, muy impresionados por la fuerza con la que estas rompían contra las rocas.
