What a great night at the Free Library of Philadelphia! Isabel Allende presented her latest book: Maya’s Notebook at the Montgomery Auditorium of the Parkway Central Library on Sunday, April 28th, 2013. In the up-and-close conversation, Allende touched on several topics from world-wide authors, books, family traditions and politics making the audience eager to know her deeply.

In this informal conversation, Allende mentioned that as an author, she must feel connected not only with the personages that are being develop in the storytelling, but also with the events -- geographical and cultural components—that are occurring in the narrative. In addition, the author states that she never writes a story for an intended target audience. For instance, Maya’s Notebook was never written for a young adult group of readers.

Finally, Allende believes that women around the world, when confronted with life difficulties are stronger in spirit. The challenges that women face everyday help each one of them to become a great leader. This was a great conversation!!!

Coming home late last night, I passed this handwritten poster, which had been taped over an ad for an upcoming film. Translation: "The United States assassinated 24 civilians in Haditha, Iraq. Who is the real terrorist?"

This is the first time in my long years in this neighborhood that I've seen such direct criticism of US foreign policy done by a local resident. (i.e.: Not a printed poster or sticker.) Aside from the political message, I like the flash-free city lights in this late-night shot, the lights in the windows and the car's tail-lights as it crosses the street... Not too many folks on foot at this hour!

Needless to say, this did not remain posted for long. In early June 2010, I noticed that even the phone booth had been removed. That's progress, I guess...

Go to heaven if you want to have those things flying around your head bothering you as you try to walk.

"Bodas quinceñeras" is not Spanish for "baby showers." Bodas are weddings and Quinceñeras are fiestas de quince años, celebrations of girls' 15th birthdays. Baby showers are baby showers.
