Sandburg students met with educator Barb Alvarado over a series of classroom visits in November and December of 2017, culminating in a Frieda Fiesta event at the Hawthorne Library in January of 2018.
This visit was part of the library's Language Liaison program, connecting young children and their families and caregivers to library resources for early learning in Spanish and Hmong. The Language Liaison program is partially funded by a grant from the Madison Public Library Foundation.

Buenos Aires, Capital Federal: A weathered, analog menu board serves as a nostalgic centerpiece for a traditional pizzeria along the bustling Avenida Corrientes. The tactile lettering, neatly arranged in varying price tiers, evokes the enduring spirit of Argentine gastronomic culture, where the art of pizza making is celebrated with reverence. Sunlight filters through the window, casting subtle glints across the glass surface that protects the hand-placed characters, highlighting the rich textures of the deep red backdrop. Each line item, from the iconic fugazzeta to the cooling beverages, reflects a culinary heritage rooted in long-standing community traditions and modest, authentic dining experiences. The precise, utilitarian typography offers a glimpse into the rhythmic pace of neighborhood life, capturing a moment frozen in time amidst the city's frantic energy. Such preserved establishments are vital to the identity of the city, anchoring the modern traveler in the historical depth of South American urban culture. This image acts as a sensory bridge between the past and present, inviting patrons to savor a slice of local heritage. By documenting these subtle details, the cultural narrative of the region is preserved for future generations to appreciate and explore. This image is a collaborative production by Samuel Jeffery and Audrey Bergner for Project 23.

We found the play very moving, and the end left us with tears in our eyes. However, we had a great time and wiped away the tears with a glass or two of wine in the Casco Viejo after the play.
